I’ve had that problem at least a few times before & this time it was actually caused by that exact kind of drain trap used on that one. The systems are normally a 3 ton or bigger & when the blower fan is either on a higher speed or is just big like a 5 ton, the fan is blowing so strong, that it causes a very strong vacuum & it sucks air backwards up the drain line & that trap is not deep enough to stop or counter act the vacuum strength & it causing the system to not drain fast enough or “properly”. That is why there was so much water in the drain pan still. The large amount of water in there & the humidity in there just quickly cause the system to freeze up. Especially in the rainy season like right now during the summer time. The other day I tried to vacuum out a drain line and got almost absolutely nothing, I was suspecting that maybe someone probably purposely poured like super glue in the drain line or something, so I then pulled the entire underground drain line out & completely replaced it with a new drain line, after I got it out it was completely clean. Then after I put the new line, I put an extra deep trap on it. After I returned the next day everything was working perfect. It took me an hour or two thinking about it & just trying different things the day before, but I finally found that the trap was the problem. Also, I forgot to say earlier, that the air handler was in the attic and it was leaking into the ceiling and the drywall was starting to fall. It was all caused by the strong vacuum of the blower motor 👍 If that helps all you guys at all. Leave me a like. Thanks Guys.

I actually had the same problem that the blower was sucking all the water out of the drain pan, and it was leaking all over, I tried putting in a deeper and wider trap but it didn't help, I ended up putting a sponge in the drain pan to hold the water down and it worked fine after that.

@@martinberkovics9194 What was the static pressure on the negative side? A standard 3/4 p-trap should have no issue with negative pressure unless it is well out of range. Running traps or no trap at all often due even in normal conditions. If you have a clear as in not clogged drain with a properly vented P-trap, and the pan still holds excessive water, you could be massively out of level, but more likely undersized ducts causing excessively high static pressure on the negative side.

Agreed A plugged filter sounds more realistic of the cause since no other issues found..They probably checked it after they called you and the plugged filter is sitting on top of the trash can?

I check the trash can and 90% the old filter is there . Could be the contactor sticking. I like to double check the ductwork . Sometimes is like you said , blower or txv failing randomly

It’s either the filter dirty back side of your Evap coil if you have a txv at the evap coil the super heat should be higher at like 20 degrees

In the video, it looked like the return duct was separating from the unit. If you’re constantly pulling in hot outdoor air, it’ll have a hard time satisfying on hotter days

Check filter, shut system on and off by thermostat. Maybe thermostat is issue not calling for fan.

something u probably should have done was to see if the unit actually turned on and off thru the thermostat. and if the tstat is operating properly. maybe the drain is clogged and the water slowly evaporatored onto the coil. now that will depends if they had the ac running during cold nights, suction temp could have gotten down to below 32 (the SH is still there. so the compressor wont over ice up. but if the drain was clogged thats a possibility) i agree come back in a week or so and see how its running good video

I saw everything okay. Maybe dirty filter and sometimes too much water still water for too kong can cause it to freeze. Not 100 % all the time, but it has happened to me. It's just one of those mystery frozen units lol

Possibly a small piece if debris that plugs up the txv in cooling mode but when ran it heat it frees back up?🤔 I’d say the dirty filter is more likely. They don’t ever want to admit to it though…

Sticking contactor most likely. Did you inspect it and check for pitting?

Are they using either ecobee or nest power stealing thermostats? As those models have documented history of ghost like blower issues. For what reason did you replace the IBM? We have had to replace a dozen or more x13 motors in ICP products in the last two years, mostly do to cavitation issues, and or unit freezing up when everything checked correctly, and the issue was the IBM would occasionally drop out on a call.

The first shot of that evap coil looked a little dirty. When you get that much ice buildup and the coil has a lot of dirt, the ice will actually pull most of it off the surface as it falls off. Probably where some of that junk in the bottom of the unit came from.

Why more manufacturers don't use freeze stats....I don't know. They would've stop this. That is one thing carrier did that was smart....CLO board and a freeze stat.

I have a question about the drain lines the primary has a float switch and a tee before the P trap wich is always blowing cold air, and the emergency second drain just has a 90 degree elbow face down to the pan also blowing cold air is this the right install ?this was done 3 years ago.

Did you verify the airflow rate? Maybe the airflow was low causing the evaporation coil to freeze up. Did you check the filter dryer for a delta T across it (indicating a liquid line restriction)?
