The lengths are 5:2 ratio. The shorter piece is 28cm. 28(cm) is "2-parts" in the 5:2 ratio. "1-part" = 28/2 = 14cm "5-parts" = 5 * 14 = 70cm So solved with 2 simple calculations: 28 / 2 = 14 14 * 5 = 70 = 70cm = length of longer piece of cable

Interestingly, I never learned about ratios in High School, I was taught them at art school, when I was studying photography. The preparation of darkroom chemicals requires a large amount of mathematical calculation in ratios, i.e, dilution of developer in a ratio of say 5 to 2, calculating how much developer and water you will need. Using Mathematics in a practical application is part of what made photography fun for me. BTW, I did get the correct answer in my head.

Long and drawn out. a 5:2 ratio and we know the shorter length is 28cm Divide 28 by 2 and then multiply that number (14) by 5 and you get your answer of 70

This is the same approach I used. If 28cm represents two parts, then one part must be 14cm. Five times 14 equals 70.

I _first_ got 42 cm, using 5 to 2 being the same as 10 to 4, or 40%. The 60% would then be the 42. _But then_ I remembered mixing paint at work that needed specific ratios of paint to thinner, and to hardener. I've been out of that work for over a decade, but I still remembered that with a little thinking, LOL! SO... that led me to thinking it was 70cm. From 28÷2=14, then 14×5=70. And then I remembered the cross product thing, which is a great way to check my work, and boom! I got it correct!!!

I realised that if you divided 28 by 2 it gave you 14 so the longer bit was 5 times bigger ie70 did it in 5 seconds in my head

Short piece is 28 or 2 parts, long piece is unknown (x) or 5 parts. Short is 2x14 long must be 5x14 or 70. I don't like seeing it as algebra. 5 is to x as 2 is to 28. When i read it this way I just see the answer.

@@panlomito Of course not - the answer is 14, but in order to get to the answer of the tutor, I simply multiplied that answer(which is 14) by 5 to show that the answer is 70

No disrespect but I always find your explanations long and drawn out and confusing. I'm 70 years old, have had a lot of math and calculus and can always do your math problems in my head from your thumbnail. Answer is, a ratio of 5:2 = 2.5 to one X 28 = 70. When doing it in your head...it is simply 2 x 28 = 56 + 1/2 of 28 = 70. Not sure why your answers are always so long and confusing. In any event, thanks for helping people with their math.
