whenever some cager talks about "rOaD tAx" the answer is, okay, charge every vehicle proportional to the damage they do to the roadway - which is based on weight^4/axle. For every penny a bicyclist would pay, every cager would pay hundreds of dollars. (someone else will have to do the math here)

Car (total weight 2 tonnes, 2 axles): load per axle: 1 tonnes Truck (total weight 30 tonnes, 3 axles): load per axle: 10 tonnes 10^4 = 10⋅10⋅10⋅10=10,000 times as large The load on the road from one axle (2 wheels) is 10 times greater for a truck than for a car. However, the fourth power law says that the stress on (damage to) the road is this ratio raised to the fourth power. The road stress ratio of truck to car is 10,000 to 1. Even if it was more like York! York is actually a lovely place to walk around! It has lots of narrow walkable streets and old buildings, nice parks. It is one of the most walkable cities in the UK, I'd argue it may even be THE most walkable city in the UK, not because it has lots of shiny new infrastructure, but because it was preserved and not bulldozed entirely for cars!

I am with the older gentleman from 6:30. I have a personal bike AND take citibike. If I'm going out to do something predictable like a regular commute, then I take my own bike. If I am going to see friends and we may switch locations, I'd prefer to take a citibike to meet up, ride the subway with them to the next spot, and citibike home than keep tabs on my personal vehicle. Great to use both.

I actually used to LOVE riding my bike in LA traffic, back in the late 80s. I lived 3.5 miles from my job at the California Museum of Science and Industry (it has a new name now). I could drive my car in 23 minutes or ride my bike in 19. I loved riding up and down Western avenue, Hollywood boulevard, Melrose, the hill on la cienega, and riding Sunset all the way out to Venice Beach. The thrill of needing to watch out for tourists who would stop in the middle of the road, throw open their car door, and step out to take a picture, kept my adrenaline pumping. I'm 62 now. Give me a protected bike lane any day!

From a Dutch perspective seeing America gradually accepting cycling and cycling infrastructure i can safely say that cycling may become the norm in a few decades as your cities will correct themselves in restructuring and having proper pedestrian and cycling infrastructure and more safe public spaces around the neighborhood. The thing is its only the richer popular cities are having this. While Netherlands's bike path is every where aside from car centrict town of Netherlands. The whole main purpose for cycling is to be a cheaper transportation, which these need to be applied to low income cities too. Not only that, some Americans are angry about bike and bus infrastructure, this week, they block the lane by parking their car and came with an firearm, worst part is that cops did not arrest him as carrying an firearm is illegal. This was in portland where I live. Its the people that won't change and their car ownership and right mentality. Some Gen z I worked with are infected with this mentality as well and worst is that they don't care about public transportation and thinking bicycles is for"loosers". As an gen z myself, I think US will be divided with this for sure. I never been to India but I am surprised that India and china is catching up with bicycle transportation than the US and more people cycle in asia. I am not from india btw.

I live in Nocatee Florida. It was intended to be a “golf cart” community with separate roads for golf carts and it turns out many of us are using bikes instead. NYC is one of the best places I’ve ridden but communities like mine are super bike friendly too.

@@sysbofh I agree. It’s almost built for bikes! The golf carts aren’t allowed to go faster than 15 mph on their designated streets. But they can go faster on the actual streets (30 mph max). There’s less traffic and noise here as a result.

Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles. Safe protected bike lanes and trails are needed so adults and children can ride safely. Speak up for bicycles in your community. Bicycles make life and cities better. Ask your local transportation planner and elected officials to support more protected bike lanes and trails. Children should be riding a bicycle to school and not be driven in a minivan.

Here in San Antonio, TX my biggest issue with riding my bike daily is defficient bike infrastructure and nonexistent bike parking. We have a great bike trails system, but getting to the trails you either take your chances riding on the streets to get to a trailhead or put your bike on your rack and drive. Kind of defeats the purpose. 😢

There was a Wendy's here which tried to refuse service to bicyclists in the drive-thru; after more than a dozen long holdups with annoyed customers refusing to leave, causing other customers to give up & drive away, they gave up on that policy & serve bicyclists now.

I don’t think it’s uniquely American. If you look back to the 70s in Amsterdam there were events and even protests very similar to this. A 2 hour train ride in any direction from Amsterdam will take you to cities that are just as car dependent as NYC. There is room for improvement everywhere.

Just want to thank this channel and Chris for helping my and my family to get a cargo bike. This channel definitely changed my view on bikes and we got raid of 1 car and now somehow we have 4 ebikes. Including a trike for my mother in law when she visits. My wife was skeptical at first and now she has come around as well for biking to do daily errands. It's so much fun and the toddler just loves it. I have done something like 1700 miles in the last year. Before that maybe 100 miles in my life. I even go to some meetings now and convinced some other friends about bikes and short trips. I may have even gotten Fairfax county to do an ebike rebate program here in northern Virginia.

Idk what happened to their new metro stops and not building up the are right next to the stations. I will say Leesburg is nice for biking. as for getting bikes stolen. I'm Dutch with international friends. I managed to push my London friend to use the superhighways (lol) until the bike got unfortunately stolen. The issue is mainly over-night storage. You don't want to bring your tires into the elevator. You need ground storage for your bike in a place with a decent enough structure.

I live in Portland Oregon. On August 13th we will be having the annual Providence Bridge pedal bicycling event this is where they close down all the bridges like 12 of them from automobile travel to bicycles. I signed up for the main right which is I believe 20 miles? I did this a few years back and decided to do it again this time around. It's a lot of fun and you really get to see the cycling Community up close. I think what I will do this year is put all of my bikepacking gear on my bike and camping care for the bridge pedal . To show people how you can turn a cycling Adventure into a overnight multi-day bikepacking event. My e-brake I use for fun and commuting grocery shopping over the road you name it. My car stays parked most of the time. Maybe I'll put a sign on my bike trailer it says something like get out there for a touring Adventure!

I’d love to do one of these events. It’s great you guys were helping out the riders. As usual, the people on the street are very good at identifying problems, and terrible at suggesting solutions. New York has one of the more mature bike cultures. Keep it going, and don’t start a culture war like what’s going on in Toronto. Push for changes that will most likely get the most people on bikes while angering drivers the least. The more people see other people using bikes, the more voters are drawn into the bike ranks while the other voters lose the energy to push back.

the guy made a great point about people with other "types of bikes". i have nothing against ebikes but sometimes that stuff is just TOO fast and i do not want to be on the receiving end of a moron that let the throttle get to their head. when you're hitting 20mph ON throttle or higher thats when you need to get out of the bike lane. it takes a lot of work to maintain that speed if you're using a non-throttle ebike or going natural. thats why whenever i see someone with an ebike WITH those big wheels and batteries i move away. i ain't gonna leave it to chances and i won't assume that "someone" is a pro but at the same time i shouldn't have to feel worried about sharing a lane with them. the same concept when you're out riding WITH cars, right? there needs to be a separate lane for people who use those types of bikes atleast in the city or busy areas where there's a lot of traffic. then again it's already hard enough to even get decent bike safety infrastructure so asking for more is a bit pointless. lol

Where I live, bike infrastructure is bare minimum lip-service to the idea, and I spend most of my rides in car lanes, because the bike lanes just aren't where I need them. For that reason, I got a fat tyre moped style bike because I wanted that bigger profile on the road. Worst case scenario with that is a driver might mistake me for a motorbike and NOT pull out in front of me because they think I'm going a bit faster. Due to Australia's laws, I'm speed limited to 25 km/h (about 15.5 mph), and, even having turned my speed limiter off, I can just about squeeze out another 5 km/h at the cost of literally half my range, so I don't do that. Fat bikes are certainly in the minority here, because our laws also restrict us to 250W, which just isn't enough power to reliably carry a 30kg or more bike effectively. By far, the worst part of my commute isn't the cars, it's the cyclists. The neck-to-knees lycra folks who race along in flocks taking up both sides of the bike path (where my commute takes me to one). Coming at me down the wrong lane they act like I'm the problem and I've been run off the path more than once. Coming at me from behind, they're all _much_ faster than my bike can go. The athletes who seem to think every ride is the Tour de France have no concern for anyone else. Like, I'm conscious of how heavy I am and how fast I can go, so on the shared paths I drop to 18 km/h rather than my full 25 km/h, because if I hit someone they aren't going to get up. The lycra set don't give a shit about that.

Yeah... when you have to traverse areas where there's little to no set bike lanes, you need that power. Even on an unlocked Ariel Rider X class, that 35 mph doesnt leave you much room when youre riding with cars that go 50+ mph.

6:45 I agree that bringing bikes inside everywhere would logistically hard and not needed in the long run. Except having indoor/garage parking for large events and shopping centres/districts. The Netherlands has a lot of bikes parked outside and many only have a frame lock. Yes, they still have a lot of bike theft, but a simple but strong U-Lock could help deter theft and even having a registry like 529 Garage from Vancouver that usable worldwide. All my bikes are on there and have a little tamperproof sticker to act as deterrence. It also equips the community to be on a lookout for the bike.

I went to NYC in late 2021 and took the Citibikes all over. I was amazed by the bike infrastructure but also scared by the throttle-bikes used by the delivery riders. Well done Tara and Chris needs to work on his mic-cabling skills still.

My favorite thing was the expressway. Cars backed up (assumingly because of the event), but when someone had a flat or a malfunction, people easily got around and others stopped to help . Clear, clean riding. Also the scene before that with the little "Don't say that!" about the overhang.

Ease of access with shared bikes exists even with safe bike parking imo. The ability to ride to a destination and take a different mode of transportation home is amazing. Like going to out for drinks, going to work when it'll rain in the afternoon, etc

Stockholm, for example, saw a massive drop in car traffic on day 1 when they implemented it, and that drop was sustained even after the "shock factor" wore off. To make it work though requires charging enough to really convince people to consider other modes of transport while also doubling down on enhancing those options.

You should come to Montreal's Tour de l'ile and Tour de nuit. Similar events to this. They're held at the end of May every year. It's part of a week long celebration of cycling. Tour de nuit is particularly fun as it's held at night so it's very festive and people dress up with lots of colours and lights. Both events usually attracts about 20-25K people each.

From an "ease of access" perspective, even with no security concerns, the benefit of using bikeshare is you aren't tied to your bike when you arrive. If it suddenly starts raining, you just park the bike and take public transit, but if you brought your own bike, now you have to take it everywhere with you. Or even if you're fine locking it up and going home, you'd still need to come back for it later.

It's cheaper for the city to totally abandon the MTA train, and use the underground tunnels for bikeway tunnels. Hell, even automatic trams would be cheaper than fixing the nightmare of rail in NYC.

I liked the Dream Project someone posted about no cars bigger than a smart4two in the city with parking garages being updated for max occupancy and only every 10+ blocks min between each one. Mainly used for a winter independent mode transportation(definitely will have biking winter infrastructure but some people can't handle the cold at all) other than public transit(which also would be upgraded and expanded to nearly every road in this project) Also many more regular bike share(sit upright one seat pedal bike with pedal assist)/ non-regular bike bike shares such as tandem, flat bed cargo, trike, hand pedals, kids sizes/adult smaller and bigger sizes than just 26"regular, child seats cargo, front trunk cargo, back trunk cargo, cooler cargos for grocery trips,etc you can reserve the one you need for certain time to be brought to closest share parking near you or to the location you need). Also all main parking garages are on the outside of the city for those who want cars to travel elsewhere. Semi's have 3 covered(for easy unloading in any weather and snow not needing plowed on the highway) 2- 3 lane (one way, they enter one side of city and exit the other) highway type road with protected unloading areas along the whole side for electric cargo box bikes to take the items to their proper buildings at the closest place possible.

Rode the 5 Boro around 5 times, and it's the safest, most scenic and was the tour that led me to ride so many more..Safe because the checkpoints to make sure there's no non registered riders. That removes the notion of someone getting their bike taken from them and getting hit by cars..Well supported and you're able to eat and drink the whole time on the bike..

I look at this and think it is great for young people. If the bicycle population goes up, the numbers of routes will go up and that will continue to create a positive feedback loop to increase the availabiltiy of bikes for little kids and older people, basically for everyone. The play aspect involved in cycling is key to why I want to see more cordoning off of passenger vehicles fuming up the air, where the social infrastructure is meager at best in a world dealing with long running car bubble epidemics of loneliness and general public distrust and grouchy even road-rage unsafe interaction. Even for people who are not considering cycling, the opportunities to upgrade our social structures is vital to feeling truly free and less constricted to our yards and cars, to create the rare experience of friendliness and community itself.

I am from the Netherlands and a few years ago my son had to be in New York for work and rented a bike to go cycling and he hated it. He is used to cycling here, but he found it dangerous in New York. And walking was not fun either because there are almost no sidewalks. America is really several hundred years behind Europe.

Lol i live in Santa Cruz and one of the cool(?) things is that people who want to bike will bike if they feel like it, infrastructure doesn't stop them. They bike in the middle of the road, sidewalks, even occasionally highway 1 or other major roads. I still wish i didn't have to bike next to cars because its scary but its the norm in santa cruz

Good initiative such a bike ride. I immediately assume that not everyone is happy with it. But I only see cyclists with helmets on. Is that mandatory there? I almost only see what we in the Netherlands would call sportier bikes. But in addition to real racing bikes, we also have lighting and mudguards for sporty bikes. No luggage carriers either? Is there a reason why this isn't the case for you? I understand that people have pain in their ass if they don't cycle that much and that often. A good saddle can make a big difference. I use a Selle Royal Respiro Soft and it fits perfectly. No dead parts on my body :-) Aha, I suddenly get that helmet when you cycled past that covered, collapsing part :-) You can see in the Netherlands that building more cycle paths does not stand in the way of a good economy. Trucks can just go everywhere. But in a safer way for pedestrians and cyclists. Nice to see you recognized so much. Have you seen the two new bicycle garages under Amsterdam Central Station yet? They are real: wow!

The lack of front steerer tube & rear frame-mounted bosses for front & rear cargo racks, has got to be the most common _stupid_ oversight I see on bike builds. Most customers don't want to have someone drill their new frame, to get a rack attached. Not everyone will want a rack, but those mounting points are dirt cheap to put in before painting & can be a real pain to add after assembly. Just include the mounting points in the first place. Not every bike needs reliable cargo racks but pretty much every bike _could_ have them, with a little foresight!

Bike lanes can definitely benefit people with disabilities. I have orthostatic intolerance and would love to get a recumbent bike, which yeah, you can't really use on "normal" roads/streets.

There needs a be a protected bike lane on Lexington Ave. It looks like the city removed a bus lane in the vicinity of Grand Central Terminal and there are planters where on of those lanes used to be. It should be a no brainer to convert that to a protected bus lane. Maybe get traffic signals for the cyclists, and it is wide enough that it could be make two way like the person at the 13:06 mark brought up.

I started biking in the 70'S. There a Need for safe parking 'In the USA'. My last bike* was stolen, it's Bluebooked at $40, 11 years old & nothing fancy. The usual reason why I get a 'New Bike' is the last bike got stolen! Protected bike lanes with Real Barriers! not just painted lines. Are really needed for safety! Drivers in Cars/trucks Have drive into the bike lane. Queens has a lot of work to do. I bike from queens to Brooklyn about 3-4 times a week because the train would take 1.5 hours (28 minutes by bike). there are many stretches that are right down dangerous for bikes, and seems like drivers dgaf about you. Brooklyn also needs a lot of work, but it's not nearly as bad as queens.

The bike sharing guy might be on to something. When you go somewhere with your bike you have to have a plan to take and bring it back. Sometimes things pop up and not being attached to a vehicle or bike is kinda nice. In his case, you can just jump on public transportation or a ride share to get where you need to go.

The fake disability objection to bike lanes is "Disabled people can't use them." That's false. The *real* objection is that poorly designed lanes create a barrier for those who need to access paratransit. If the bus's ramp cannot reach the sidewalk because of the bike lane, then a wheelchair user cannot board. Having elevation changes complicates bus and car boarding for those on crutches. Streetsblog SF has a story and links to a set of design guidelines that were developed with disabled road users. Many of the adaptations are easy to implement. the disability objection never made much sense to me either... not only are bikable places much easier and safer for disabled people to traverse, ESPECIALLY those who are deaf or blind, they're also great places for disabled people who are poor.
