As simple as this may seem it really is a very good tutorial on the use of a carpenter’s pencil. I have a flat wooden advertisement with graphite in the center and not lead but that is what we refer to it as🤣. It sits in the tray of my truck on the dash. I find that this pencil is good for scribing a contour line when fitting trim to a cabinet next to a wall that is not plumb. When marking cut lines for fine work I use a marking knife. Thank you Paw Paw for highlighting this tool that is fast becoming forgotten. 😀🛫

I also use it for scribing paneling which is not used much any more and when installing formica on countertops. The wall is rarely straight. Thank you very much. People have no idea how to sharpen a carpenter pencil. The pencil sharpener is for non carpenters. You will be laughed off a job site and would be a sign that you are not a true professional carpenter.

Gracias.

Really helpful tips. I hadn't thought of using the pencil as a scribe. I'm going to have to remember that one. btw, I think they contain graphite, not lead, these days since lead is toxic. I also still call it lead sometimes though. Old habits die hard.

Not sure that they ever contained lead, that's just a follow on from older scribing tools that used lead and silver to make semi-permanent markings

That’s funny, because I would use a pen to make my marks and only because it makes darker markings on any wood surface. I rarely use a pencil unless it’s real wood finishing work. This is good Info... Thnx! 😀✅✌️

Problem i always have isn't so much the pencil its my razors are starting to rust before i put them on the utility knife and they dont stay sharp very long at all. Put a dull rusty razor on the pencil and it damages the pencil worse than it was before i tried to sharpen it.

I think you have it right, start using your pencil sharpener on site and you will still be the but of jokes a long time into the future. Thing is they appeal, to todays gadget lovers. Always preferred a standard pencil myself , after all our ears were designed as a safe place to keep it. My current pencil of choice, "a Berol Cardinal medium soft".

Well, this is interesting. Almost one of life's mysteries. But here's the straight story. Before I get ahead of myself, I'll tell you straight out that I'm a geezer. Yep, I am. That means that I have gained a tiny bit of knowledge that I wouldn't have gained if I had croaked earlier. So I'm probably ahead of you by whatever margin. OKay, now that 've pissed you off. After nearly 60 years in construction and woodworking I`ve used all types of pencils. The straight story is, that carpenter's pencils carpenter's are designed for use on rough, unplaned lumber. They excelle at that. BUT, they are double ended, so if a finer line is needed, just a whittle away takes care of the problem. These days, I use a regular Dixon pencil, with a #4 lead. Except on those times when I need a carpenter's pencil.

For as long as it took you to sharpen your pencil, I could've used a sharpener, and been back to work. Also, those kind of utility knives are garbage.
@PawPawsWorkShop
@PawPawsWorkShop 2 жыл бұрын
You have an interesting point of view. Speed is not important when demonstrating a technique. If you don’t like the knife I’m using then don’t use it. It’s that simple. I’m so glad that you were able to determine for yourself (maybe not for others) exactly what knife you do not like and that you would rather use a sharpener for your pencil. Fantastic! Glad I could help.
