The real answer is because it's a BS excuse. Setting that aside, there is a difference between being in a car that you can easily stop and get out so you don't have that trapped feeling. You don't have that in the back of a cop car.

I'm claustrophobic to the point that I can't put my blanket over my head in bed. I have a deal with the monsters under the bed though. Everything but my face is covered and I'm good. But if my feet show- I'm free monster food. That said, windows are our friends. By "our", I mean all of us people who had horrible older siblings that caused us to be afraid of closed-in spaces.

At one of our new moves, we were playing in the basement (because we'd never had a basement before in Army housing) and I decided to hide in one of the moving boxes. He pushed the box against the wall so I couldn't get out. I ended up shredding the box and standing up to get out of it (I even got in trouble for destroying a "good box"). But since then, I can't handle being enclosed or feeling like I can't get out of anything. Cars are okay because I can see all around. Getting an MRI (I've had three in my adulthood) was an experiment in hell and I had to do the Lamaze breathing that I did while giving birth to get through it. I can handle normal elevators, but the small ones in apartment type buildings freak me out. I'd rather do the stairs!

He certainly isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer. He speeds and runs from the cops, drives in emergency lanes but he doesn’t know why he’s being arrested. And I love his comments about English isn’t his first language. When police turn on their lights and sirens it’s a universal language so whether he speaks English or not (which apparently he does speak English) is irrelevant. The guy needs to change his diet or something cause he looks more like a 40 year old, not 21.

In regards to claustrophobia, there is a difference between being in a vehicle you control and can get out of when you want and being in a car you you don't control and can't get out of. Again, this guy is almost certainly just trying to play victim but the basic idea itself is not far fetched.

I believe his fear was real. Restrained and stuck in an enclosed space might bring back memories that nobody wants to remember. In his own car, he's in control of windows, ventilation and he can move freely. I'm sure there are a few folks who haven't had trauma in their pasts who would be very anxious (beyond the norm) at being cuffed behind their back and stuffed in a confined space. ESPECIALLY in a body that isn't agile enough to get comfy even in rough conditions. And a thin body would naturally have a lot more room in the back of a police car. I have severe fibromyalgia and the hot flashes from it make me claustrophobic. I freak if I can't feel air movement on my skin. I'm fine getting scanned in the tube (MRI? CAT Scan?) because there's a lovely, cool breeze blowing around my head and body. I have them slide me in, wait a beat, bring me back out, let me gather myself for a second then I'm good to go. That air movement makes all the difference in the world for me.
