Revolving Door of Justice in La Crosse

Officers stop a car for going the wrong way on a one-way street. The passenger in the vehicle escalates the situation by fleeing on foot with a gun in his pocket. The suspect, who is legally prohibited from owning a gun is caught, and the gun is identified as stolen. In true La Crosse County fashion, the suspect is released on a signature bond and right back on the streets.

There is literally no motivation for people like this not to repeat their crimes. They are let out immediately and half of them don't show up for court and if they do they get charges dismissed. I say for any crimes like this, it's an automatic minimum 1-2 weeks in jail starting the moment they are arrested and charges and not thrown out unless it can't be proven. Bonds should only be given after this minimum period in jail. Video evidence is powerful and is proof of the crime and enough to detain for a couple of weeks. That should be enough to screw up their lives enough to not do it again. Like missing work and getting fired. And not being able to sell drugs during that time as well. Anything that hurts enough to promote not doing it again. Seems simple. Build more jails for crimes like these, pay staff to work at said jails a decent liveable wage so they will sign up, show up, and do a good job, and it will all cost less than this continuous in and out of jail problem and will free up police officers to do their work on other crimes with different people rather than the same people over and over.

It's astonishing to me how many people believe that when they are detained they are allowed to tell the police what to do. The cops are the ones who dictate what's going to happen, not the perp. The detainee has basic human rights only. No right to tell the cops how to handle them and how to do it. I thought this was a pretty standard rule that everyone knows. And bystanders getting involved makes things worse and dangerous.
