The Australian judicial system is a joke when it comes to r*pists, not only do judges frequently refuse to give convictions on cases that had overwhelming evidence to prove r*pe occurred, those they do convict are given atrociously light sentences, even for child r*pe! The judicial system also constantly lets them out early on “good behaviour” and enables them to reoffend, with this same cycle of leniency continuing seemingly every time they reoffend. What’s worse is it’s well known that the police do not have the resources to monitor all the high risk criminals out on parole, yet parole boards still insist a criminal’s release is justified due to the “strict protective measures” they’ve put in place, they insist their decisions don’t endanger the community whilst knowingly obfuscating that the police have told them time and time again they don’t have the ability to ensure those safety measures are implemented. Parole boards know that there aren’t actually any reliable safeguards in place but still let r*pists back into society anyway. This case is a perfect example of how negligent it is to allow the release of a high risk criminal without the resources required to enforce the conditions of their release. Theoretically, this crime shouldn’t have been possible as he broke his conditions for his release by contacting people online, but without anyone actively monitoring him to notice this there was no one to intervene and arrest him, so he was free to continue his hunt for victims. Considering the high likelihood an unknown woman’s body is buried out in those sand dunes that police were oblivious to, it’s disturbing to think about how many more women he would have been free to harm if not for these two women successfully surviving their encounter with him. I’m glad he’s been locked up but I don’t have any confidence he’ll serve his sentence in full, the parole board will probably let him loose on “compassionate grounds” once his old age results in health problems.

2 young girls finding a ride for a serious roadtrip in a foreign country, with a total stranger (a male who's almost 3 times their age to boot) sounds like the worst idea ever! Plus the guy's being pushy before they even agreed or met. U can call it victim blaming, and I guess it is, but wtf were they thinking? Why do people do such dumb shitt?!?

Yeah, I have seen countless stories about backpackers (usually shielded individuals from wealthier 1st world families, naive about the cruel world) go to crazy places never to be seen again. My dad travelled a lot himself when young but when he went to dangerous countries (like India, Mexico and Egypt for example) he booked trips with guides and which included armed security.

Real horror story here. I cant imagine young women being so foolish. They got in a car with someone who treated them badly... no back ground check. At minimum you send pics of his Id to friends before the trip. They took zero safety measures. Stupidity knows no bounds.

Instead of all the comments about how silly they were, how about expecting better from men? So we don't have to live assuming every man is a potential predator. Stats tell us its usually someone you know, millions hitch worldwide every day and are perfectly safe, not advocating you do it but you can't live your life expecting horror around every corner. This maggot should have been in jail so lets direct our anger where it should be, at the law enforcement who didn't do their job, and whatever judge was responsible for him walking free in the first place. Stop blaming girls who should be safe to go anywhere in this beautiful country without expecting to be raped and murdered. But hey, cheers for the victim blaming.

Those are the women we should want our daughters to be. Instead of worshipping celebrities, we should respect heroes like these women and the absolute bravery they have. Same with sons. Probably a plea deal where those charges are dropped to get him to plead to kidnapping and save everyone the drama of a trial, at least that's the argument that is used, all the lawyers and judges get paid whether it goes to court or not only this way they don't actually have to do anything and still get paid. The justice system is corrupt and barbaric the world over. In this country you call your mates not the cops.

I'm so happy both girls survived. This guy is a monster. I'm also glad that group of guys happened to be out there at that time. They both really got lucky. Why was this guy even allowed to be out in society. this right here, when people ask about DV victims and why they didn't get help - this, you are looking at it. Partly I think it has to do with the scumbag woman who lie about things like this, so it often isn't taken seriously. This is why you see almost exactly a month after they leave or try to get help they get ended. I can give you a perfect example of how these monsters are not taken seriously.
