I drove from Kansas City to the Outer Banks of NC a week ago and had my FT5D w/stock antenna attached to the A-pillar in my vehicle. It easily picked up CB Channel 19 the whole way, while my Uniden SDS100 w/GPS was scanning police dispatch frequencies and auto-updating those freqs based upon my current location. I had the B side of the FT5D scanning the FRS/GMRS freqs at the same time and wow - the United States has a TON of GMRS repeaters out there. Most of them are configured to transmit their callsign in morse code at set times and I heard a lot of them in 3000+ miles of driving. And yes, I have my FT5D "configured" to transmit on FRS/GMRS in the event of an emergency. Whenever I travel I just take the FT5D, SDS100, and my Icom IC-705 with me.

It looks like a fantastic Radio Andy and well done on the video. Opening up the radio is the same process on my FT70D a small resistor to chip away on tbe back to allow TX on PMR446. I have to say though the only thing that lets down Yaesu radios is their reluctance to support DMR... Yaesu is adamant in putting their own C4FM Fusion on all their digital radios (In a similar fashion to Icom with D-STAR) and thus not supporting DMR makes it not ideal as a scanner due to the vast majority of commerical communications using DMR... It's the only downside to what appears to be a amazing set.

I have to carry an additional radio to get CB, and if YOU were hurt and I managed to drag you to the highway, you might appreciate the ability to get help from one of the millions of CB’s going down the road. I think most people who want this capability have little interest in being on the radio at all if not required. I certainly won’t be ruining any bands….better things to do with my free time.

Cellular and wireless internet for 7, and it was intermittent for another week. People further south were out of both over a month. With my two way radios, I could have spoken to the Fire Dept, Coast Guard, and other public service directly. In the United States, it's allowed in cases involving protection of life.
