awesome. I have always loved the cello. I am learning the violin at age 50 and I am loving every thing about it. I am learning on my grandfather's violin that I have had for the past 40 years. I was told constantly that I would never learn to play it, it is too hard, your too old, yada yada yada..til one day i just decided to just learn for fun. I love everything about it.

The hardest thing I've found as an adult learning instruments is that kids have a bit of advantage in learning tones and pitch by ear other than that it's just practice and purpose.

I know a lady who is 78 and she is Learning cello. Important is not be young in the body, you must be a child in the spirit and then you can learn everything. Keep it up! 🎻💞🌷👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

A guitar student who was learning cello told her instructor that she wished the neck had frets on it to help her find the notes, the instructor said, "Don't fret it, you'll learn them eventually..." Awesome playing.

I've been self thought on guitar and started playing cello a few weeks ago and had a pretty fast start thanks to my guitar experience and trained ear. Cello is easy in the way that you can cheat and slide a bit into the right position which you can't do with frets. I just put a few pencil marks on the neck for some guidance but don't look much at them. I play mostly by ear to songs that I know the melody of and just go for it and make sounds even if it sounds crap cause you learn from that as well. And doesn't take long to get a feel for how far it is between the notes and when you find the right one it's pretty easy to get close to the next one without knowing anything about finger positions or what note it is. That will eventually come later, but right now I'm having a lot of fun and can spend 2-3 hours just plowing through a lot of songs, I would never had the same progression sitting with a note sheet playing twinkle little star.

I'm a beginner cellist and when I first heard Annie play Piatti 7th caprice, i was initially confused and wondered if she was playing in tune! But ive heard this piece a few times now and I came back to find this performance and i must say Annie's interpretation is great! played with elegance, depth and strength that rivals some of the master performances I have heard (imho) Thank you

Im a guitarist..who just started dabbling with cellos. It is fun and the tone is beautiful. Very different from the guitar but once you figure out the note/finger positions and how to use the bow...it's very fun. 🙌🏻🎻🎶

Wonderful overview of a variety of instruments with all their subtleties. It was beneficial hearing a music student play them which gives most listeners a taste of mid-to-expert level of playing. It's a challenge for beginners and students to grasp the full range of sound, technique, bow selection and age of the instruments. It would be helpful to have heard about price points of each cello, as well as the bow selections. May the music of greatest beauty increase all over the world. Thank you for the helpful post.

For a serious cello student, investing 20k or more into a long term cello is a difficult task. Contemporary makers, suck as melanson, make fine instruments but you don’t know going in whether the instrument will hold irs value in the long term. Known makers of older instruments often command higher prices and hold value, but depending on age, these instruments may have their own unique Health issues. And then there is the issue of sound reproduction, inarguably the most important aspect of the instrument. For an intermediate student, one’s ears are not attenuated to hear the nuances of sound between the different instruments. For me, I paid a professional with a doctorates degree in cello performance to audition 8 cellos ranging from 20k to 45k at an established violin shop in dc that was 12 hours driving time away. I provided the cellist with 4 microphones, stands and 8 track recorder to record the auditions, and she played the last phrasing of the cello solo from the third movement of Dvorak cello concerto in b minor. Out of 8 cellos, including one from ray melanson, she only found two French cellos to her liking, one for 25k made in 1935 and one for 45k made in 1899, both made from two different, but known makers. The one for 45k had everything a cellist could want in sound, the one for 25k was very alive in sound across all strings, but lost resonance in the higher positions. When we told the violin shop about this issue, the shop luthier pulled the top off the instrument, found a worm hole crack in the top below the fingerboard. The shop repaired the top, cut a new Belgian bridge to replace the existing French bridge, replaced the tailpiece with a plastic one, and put Larsen strings on the instrument. The resulting sound is amazing, resonance in all positions, no wolf notes, the instrument is fully alive in sound, I just love playing this instrument, and after 10 years I finally paid off the loan.

Get the best you can afford so you have fewer excuses for bad sound. That's my rule of thumb for any tools. Not 'if you are worthy', but if you itch for something better and you can do it - go for it!

She has a very nice technique. it seems like she could play just about anything effortlessly. I would like to hear her tackle a major concerto to get a better idea of her musicality. I don't know why she is playing these student pieces when she seems to be playing at a professional level.

@D W I don't know your background with the cello. It was my major in college. The Popper etudes are typically only played in a practice room or in a class for other students and not repertoire that is performed for an audience. If you were going to buy a cello, you would usually want to see how it sounds with actual music that you intend to perform in recitals, concerts or auditions.

Thanks for the video. A lot of hard work for the luthier but the results are so enchanting. The cellist shows much musical maturity and capability. The the video and audio was, as expected, so good! with the cellist and luthiers presence. One has to love the sound of the cello, also be brave, and think big to take it up.

Very enjoyable, and an incredibly brave choice of pieces. I remember my cello teacher (in about 1970!) telling me if I could play the Piatti Caprices, I could play anything... I remember attempting the 7th, as well as the others, and I have the Popper Etudes too, but gave up after struggling with the first. I''ve a mind to have another go now - thanks for the inspiration! Also to get the setup of my instrument checked, as it's not been done for over 50 years!

Hi 👋 thanks for this wonderful review. I must be honest with you here, you play amazingly well, but when you review different instruments it’s very hard, rather near impossible to tell the difference between them when you pick a different piece for each cello. 3rd cello I think where you played Bachs cello suite no2 was a good choice, earlier pieces were too fast to actually hear the beautiful tonality and resonance. I wish you picked one piece and repeated it on all 🥺. Appreciate you taking the time to test and record this though, was an enjoyable 30 mins ❤️

I thought the same thing. I wished she played the Bach on every instrument to give a true comparison. When she played so quickly(yet beautifully), you sometimes loose the sound/texture of the instrument. Playing something simpler, might have made it easier to hear the différences in sounds in which she was trying to demonstrate.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that Bach's genius as a composer makes any instrument sounds good (well, it does but hush, beethoven fanboys may start screaming all around). On a more serious note, I think that Bach's piece and the 4th one (popper's n°10) were the only two she played that were slow enough to let the cellos express themselves fully (and for the microphone to pick it up). The other pieces she played were way too fast sometimes with too much string crossings or double strings to appreciate the core sound quality of each instruments. It feeled to me more like a skill show than a sound show.

Interesting video and good performance. Just did not quite find it to be what was advertised. I was hoping to get more of a feeling for the cellos, not have a 30-minute performance by Annie. For example, wish the camera didn't focus on her face but the cello or her bowing arm to see if she had to change or compensate as she played each cello. And wish that Annie had chosen some slower songs to reveal the tone or played the same ones on each cello, rather than make it all about her performance. She is a lovely cellist but this video did not really help about the different voices of the cellos, was more of demonstration of her pyrotechnics on different cellos. Would appreciate a second series though, maybe with bows, as this might be more appropriate for her style.
