I am just waiting for a dark monster girl anime. There is so much potential, especially if it was like A Centaur's Life. In the very first episode, it said equality was valued over anything else. That can be taken dark real fast.

mericka uni when I think of equality gone wrong I think of this short story: www.tnellen.com/cybereng/harrison.html It's a really good read if you have the time, but that would be ideal for a dark monster girl anime. Regulations would be on everything to keep things equal, equality would be valued over individuality, and if it's a monster girl anime it could get to the point where people are chopping limbs off or getting plastic surgery to look equal (if it's like A Centaurs Life, then people would try to be human because that's the base model for everyone). The possibilities are there. You can go dark and have gore or dark and get political it's your choice.

567swimmey I mean in the manga of centaurs life we see the darkness rising up, the reptile home of antartica is invaded by a small task force killing some of the population, I haven't checked back into the manga in a while due to the manga taking forever to be released for sale so I need to read it online but more and more it's starting to show cracks in the society, plus I mean there's nearly whole chapters discussing the opression centuars had endured for centuries, being enslaved to being using as workers and cavalry, their human half's bound up and heads put in metal helmets as their forced to be used as we would normal horses, hence the at first weird seeming rule of no riding a centaurs back.
@cooperg42327 жыл бұрын
that's not dark really .-. well to me it isnt mentioning slavery isn't dark. Going into gruesome detail about how they were abused without sugar coating or censoring it makes it dark. Let me know if the show spontaneously flips genres, after all its a slice of life.

I have a slight complaint about the shows you picked out to compare to Centaur's Life... The problem being... Centaur's life is older than all 3 of them Centaur's life first came out in 2011 before all of the others (Monster Musume: 2012; Kobayashi-San 2013 & Demi-chan 2014) Seeing at the time frame in which the series were released, its highly likely that all the series you listed took inspiration from Centaur's Life to begin with and just went their own way with it Your complaints about it not having the narrative polish of these later series is like complaining Persona 3 doesn't have the polish of Persona 5 I think you threw yourself at this without doing enough research on the genre It would better if you also compared it to some older works, which don't have it in their DNA and compare and contrast; such as Seto no Hanayoma or Rosario Vampire, instead of picking on it with stuff that came later

@kagekun11987 жыл бұрын
I suppose the problem you have with Centaur's Life is by judging it strictly from a monster musume genre. The series actually goes in a lot deeper and somewhat stranger as it goes on. The appeal is supposed to be the differences in their multi-species society and our relatively homogenous one. (the cat-man glasses being an example) The series doesn't tell you about its society, it shows it. Subtly. While there may be a tad too many references to discrimination, its actually an indication of the iron fist beneath the government's silk glove. Their society's daily actions are more regulated than what at first glance appears to be a carefree life. What does a good monster musume anime look like anyway? I also think your assessment of Demi-chan is too narrow, judging it strictly from the monster musume angle. The appeal from that anime is actually the girls personalities and how the main cast interact with one another. I think it demonstrates the same kind of heart as Kobayashi-san did. Again, what is a good monster musume show? Given that we have Monster Musume (the harem one) as a benchmark, there isn't much to compare with

The question of how they put them on is easy. They have knots on the sides so they thread it through the stupid looking thigh gap then tie both sides. The design for the mermaids in this is pretty dumb. If they wanted them to have thighs they could have done what they did with the snake people and have 2 legs and a tail so they can get around on land. A better question is how the cat and goat people exist. First episode of the show explained that creatures 3 sets of appendages won the evolutionary race of that world. The cat and goat people only have 2 sets like humans, goats, and cats in our world. They should have another set of arms or legs since they don't have wings like the angels/demons.

The thing is that, including Centaur's Life, we've only had 4 monster girls anime... which started in just 2015. So this sub-genre is only 3 years old in anime format. There aren't enough anime like that for us to properly determine what is "traditional monster girls anime" and what isn't. Musume, Demi-chan and Kobayashi are all very different from each other. Centaur is also already different from them. It seems to combine certain aspects from each three, and add its own things on top, like the whole discrimination/iniquitous situation. I agree with some points you make, but I think it's too early to "objectively" judge as this sub-genre is so recent.

I'd say to be fair to Monster Musume it's mostly a comedy, making fun of itself as it does what it does. They make the main character an almost non-character to make fun of both dating games and other harem animes, then build lore about the monster girls themselves. For most of the first season he's just dragged along for the ride and even ends up so physically injured that the grim reaper starts keeping tabs on him, Making fun of the fact he has literal monsters in his home. The Fan service, is just fan service, a guilty pleasure. But honestly considering how so many animes play "dance of the 7 veils" with breasts, it's a little refreshing to have an anime that avoids that for the most part. There's a certain honesty to it.

I like the OVA where the girl from Rachnera’s previous host family comes over to talk about their petition to be hosts for her again. In the brief amount of time that DarlingMasterHoney-kun (Kimihito) listens to her, while handing out the drinks that he bought for all of them, he determined that the girl (and probably her family) weren’t fit for hosting because they were in it for the wrong reasons. That showed that a generic MC in a harem anime can still have good morals and consideration for the girls that he has been tasked to take care of.

Saying that Centaur Life does not have a thing yet, it clearly has gone for political commentary over heart, ecchi comedy, or everyday issues. Its execution may have left a little wanting, but it is not lacking its own theme separate from the others. And using Monster Musume as the basis that monster girls are inherently a fetish thing, I think is a little unfair, and I would even say the same thing in saying some of the social commentary is just tacked on. Sure it is going for selling sex, but it has realised characters, with some pretty good comedy to some, that even female viewers could enjoy it.

I had no idea anime fans were this bullied that they wanted "acceptance" this bad after reading the comment section. If the show is enjoyable I really don't see what the problem is. I don't understand why fans talk about "stigma" and getting rid of the crazy shows you can only see in anime, which is what makes the genre interesting. YOU don't need validation for your hobbies people.
@alisw817 жыл бұрын
I agree there is a stigma against animation in general, but what I don't understand is why fans commit themselves to trying to dispel that. If someone thinks anime is either porn or Pokemon, when in this day and age they definitely have seen more than enough evidence against that then let them. At a certain point your just trying to get them to accept animation how you see it (and to get the "casual" to either stop making fun of them or take animation seriously), which is fine the first time around but fans need to realize when someone simply won't change their mind.

Having finished the series I felt it brought up a series of rather serious and relevant questions then deliberately did not try to answer them, leaving it to the audience to find their own answers. It didn't really seem like there was an actual problem, more that it's just not to your taste. That being said, the anime feels a little less special compared to the manga, it's hard to explain why. Scenes like the "Am I normal... down _there_ ..." scene go by pretty quickly when reading it but in the show, it felt like it was pretty much the whole episode. It's also a case (imo) of "everything you want is probably at a later point in the series than the anime will actually get to".

As someone who makes a monster coming-of-age comic, it's soooo tiresome to see this subgenre being nothing but fetish stories with some half-assed lesson thrown in the end. Another thing that's bothersome is keeping designs as human as possible. Aside that it's easier for the fetish, I guess creators assume readers/viewers are too dumb to follow stories of characters that actually look different? Drop cat ears or some antlers, BOOM monsters. Everyone go home. (I'm sorry but sticking a snake head to the body of a teenage girl is aesthetically dumb and conceptually lazy.) Kobayashi looks good though. Like you said, at least it seems to have a lot of heart.

I personally think Mr. Takahashi's relationship with the monster girls is just as strong as Kobayashi's relationship with the dragons. The teacher really gets to understand the demis through examining their monster traits and learning about the family relationships. I know that we do only have four to explore, but the four monster girls we have are really explored. The bond between the teacher and the demis is what really matters here. I think it goes into deeper relationship territory than Dragon Maid ever could. Having four monster girls Takahashi deals with, while at the same time having the monster girls understand each others demi-traits to enhance their bonds gives the anime more complex, but intriguing relationships than the bonds Kobayashi creates with other dragons in Dragon Maid in my opinion. All four monster girls gradually form a friendship that is very intriguing to see, and it is all thanks to Takahashi that really explores the depth of these characters. There are some nice bonds like Kanna/Saikawa, Tohru/Kobayashi, Fafnir/Makato, Tohru/Tohru's father, Kobayashi/Elma, but... I feel Demi-Chan is more intriguing as explored traits are what create the relationships, giving these characters more notable three-dimensional depth. Dragon Maid is kind of like this, but as far as dragon traits are explored, it's only mentioned a few times. Mostly, it is just dragons trying to adapt to human life to get away from the medieval life they used to live in rather than exploring the weaknesses of some of these characters like Demi-Chan. Tohru and Kobayashi definitely reveal some notable weakness in regards to Tohru, but as for the other relationships, not really. The other relationships are mostly for comedy and a bit of nice chemistry. Granted, Demi-Chan hasn't the explored the rest of the monster human society (And we haven't seen real human and demi-human relationships aside from Takahashi yet), but it certainly is making genuine progress with each monster girl revealed. I follow the manga too, and so far, there are interesting new relationships like parent and demi-son that will eventually have Takahashi interviewing them later. I love Dragon Maid just as much as Demi-Chan, but I think Demi-Chan really reigns king in the relationship department. Perhaps Dragon Maid will explore their characters more, but at the moment I prefer Demi-Chan more. Demi-Chan is the most intriguing monster girls anime I've seen, and I personally think you are giving less credit to Demi-Chan than it is due. What's your take on it Arkada?

Your mistake is that you expect similar things from different "monster girl shows". "Monster girl" is not a genre; it's a gimmick. Centaur no nayami is an INSANELY good slice of life satire. It constantly resembles and mocks real life in eerie, creative ways. And its rapid-fire changes of plot focus only make it mimic real life even further. My only complaint is that I wish the male to female character ratio was at least close to even, which I'm starting to accept that my preferred anime genres will never provide...

That said, the spring of female-oriented anime that aren't just Shoujo only really started recently with stuff like Free and Kuroko, which is all fairly contained in Sports Anime. Dragon Maid and Interviews with Monster Girls are for the most part, fairly innocent and focus more on the characters. I have only seen the first two episodes of Centaur's life so far in the dub, but as of right now, it's not very compelling. EDIT: Saw 4 more episodes for the dub, and to be honest, I WANT to like it, but it's just way to preachy at times with it's social issues that it just feels like a giant fun vacuum and it's very off putting. On one hand, it has very cute character designs, and it makes you laugh at the light-hearted and cuteness, but whenever you start to smile, the social bullshit pops out and ruins it. SECOND EDIT: Watched the rest, and yeah, nothing really changes I stand by what I said after seeing the rest. As Ark said, it lacks heart and is more interested in telling weird stories and having weird social views and commentary forced on the viewer than showing anything actually compelling or enjoyable. Even when it's NOT doing that, it just feels weird and awkward, and not in a good way. In uncomfortable way that makes you feel like you are the biggest weeb ever just for watching it. It's the weakest Monster Girl show in a while and I give it a 5/10, meaning below average and I only really recommend it to those who are more than a little interested in the Monster Girl genre and have already watched everything else.

Centaurs life imo is pretty garbage compared too the first 3 tho it can have some moments where it seems hey that's kinda interesting I don't really like the designs not because it's not fan service or more human it's because to me they are very ugly and more OC characters on a deviant art pages it's pretty boring bland and I'm not very into yuri or yoai anime cause they turn gay like maximum and that's coming from a bi person eh I guess it's a niche thing (Tho I do love koboyashi with its characters being more heartfelt and connections than being gay or suggestively gay cause shits and giggles gay)

I have been following the Centaur's Life manga for YEEEAAAARRRSSSS and trust me, as long as the anime stays faithful to it (and so far so good) it WILL find it's footing. Mainly in seemingly innocent stories about characters interacting in day to day life with a lot of undertones about the role of the government in trying to regulate a society with such varying biological differences (I think the biggest question is how to deal with censorship, and whether trying to regulate discussions about race in order to avoid offending people is actually making it more difficult for people to handle their differences). But it is not and will probably never be the most intelligent anime out there. I mostly read/watch it because it's really cute and clever.

A centaurs life is pretty good for the kind of the show it is. It's pretty layered for how short it is. It's not amazing but it's good. They worked pretty hard in trying to explain how the world works and gets pretty serious at times.

We (me, my sister, and my mom) gave up on Centaur's Life after two episodes. It just didn't grab us like Demi-chan did. I was considering jumping back into it if I heard that it shifted gears at some point (I was interested in the 1984-ish undertones with the gov't), but considering what Arkada said, I don't think I'll revisit it again. A shame, really.

A monster girl series needs no apology or explanation. Its appeal is based on a simple fact: guys instinctively LOVE exotic girls. The ecchi element is inherent in the trope, which means "Monster Musume" gets it exactly right. Let's be honest: if monster girls existed in the real world, they could make a fortune as high-priced call girls.

Sorry to correct you but the "mermaids with the thigh gaps are a thing. theres ancient mermaid art that shows all kind of fishtails. Even completly splitted fishtails were a very common way of drawing mermaids. Even freakin Starbucks uses a mermaid with a splitted fishtail as a logo... I think that particular mermaid/siren was called melusine. There are all sort of varieties of mermaid fishtails. Pinterest has a lot of these pics for example. One of my favorites is the one by the artist maurent miny. Some even have their fishtail only begin at their knees even.

When this guy first started I was gonna respond with, “Obviously this guy hasn’t seen Interviews With Monster Girls, but then he had.” Which was good that positive light was needed in this review. And then he went and talked about how there wasn’t enough personality in harem animes. I quite honestly think that harem animes have plenty of personalititties cough personality my bad. I think there are great and have their place with their mounds of deep “plot” and character “development” I think that they definitely serve their purpose. Quite frankly if someone is watching a harem ecchi anime and expecting to find deep and engaging story telling them they’ve come to the wrong place. There may be some exceptions and my opinions may be wrong or different from your own but at the end of the day those are just my opinions on the subject and nothing to be butt hurt about.

"Dr. Hitomi's Clinic" and "Elf Can't on a Diet" are decent manga. The first is an allegory about puberty while the latter is more along the lines of an exercise tutorial. I feel that the ideas of "Monster Musume" and "Daily Life of a Centaur" might work a little better as anthology series where the cast/setting changes every 2-3 episodes and explored the story in the monsters' biomes rather than the human world. Like exploring a labyrinth or pasture of a minotaur herd one section and a monogamous relationship with a harpy on fishing cliffs another section. Of course, it wouldn't hurt to get a few more monster boy titles out there. Something other than vampires and demons, I mean. Then again, it might help if Japan made anime involving more yokai girls, like akaname, hone-onna, tsukumogami, and just anything other than a yuki-onna or kitsune for once. It never hurts to write material per your own taste on hour own, though.

My biggest issues with "A Centaur's Life" (which hasn't prevented me from enjoying the rest of the currently available series), is an assurance early on when they claim that EVERYTHING on their planet has 6 limbs. Unless they stretch the definition of "limb" to its absolute limit and beyond, there's only 3 of the 7-ish human-esque species that have six limbs, and technically, two of those would have SEVEN if you did that.

I actually liked the first episode of Monster Musume, since it was just the MC (can't remember his name) and Miia, living in a society where they aren't allowed to be romantically involved, but do like eachother. I'm used to bracing myself going into anime reviews to have the narrator be into creepy ass anime shit so this was a breath of fresh air! My issue with Centaur's Life (beyond it never putting in real effort AND THE THIGH GAP) is that it tries to say something, in the weakest way possible, which then muddies the water. It seems to want to say 'Discrimination is bad!' but does in a fashion that potentially paints the government's effort as 'The path to hell is paved with good intentions' kind of way. Like it's trying to have it's cake and eat it too.

or the politics and the parody of modern society it is. i mean my interpretation of the show is that it is trying to focus on what if "race" in the human world was more defined. instead of just a geographic origin, what if it was more about what makes up your body, so that it is hard to just pass off race as simply different features leading us to think it doesn't exist. i mean, they literally point that out in one of the episodes that if people would have evolved from apes, that there would be no means of discrimination. optimistic yes, but the point and the goal of the series is made quite blatantly clear.

Papi (パピ Papi) is a harpy (part human, part bird) = actually laid egg in show so we can say that she more then likely function down their exactly like a bird. 3. -Making monster only "girl" create plot-hole. like how they reproduce ? with human man ? does that mean the first centaur was the result of the copulation between a man and a horse ? How could their gene be compatible enough to bear a child ? The worldbuilding is a bit weak. -For the fanservice: could be less vulgar and more natural. Forced fanservice feels so artificial and repetitive sometime. I feel like I have seen this scene before -Overall: I belive the monster "girl" genre could be other thing than hentai. It could have a story beyond boobs and bestiality. I still like monster musume rachnera is waifu

I do wonder what you'd think of 12 Beast if that got an Anime. Think Monster musume in a Hard Fantasy setting & a plot with an actual story. Im kinda bummed out It never got anime inspite Musume getting as popular. Says a lot of the community. A guy makes a comic fetishising the hell out of monster girls in odd ways at that with no real plot to speak of & it gets an anime adaptation, OVA's, Shorts, Ton of Merch some ridicules with a fitting price. Same guy makes another comic also very heavy on fetish but with an actual story, plot progression & villains That stays just a comic. No anime at. No Merch, most ppl dont even know it exists. Rather depressing & indication that you might never get better than MonMusu. Cause clearly the community doesn't want better than MonMusu just more MonWaifu :(

We are getting Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari (Shield Hero) sometime in the future as an anime. We've gotten a teaser at least. I feel that, if done properly, it would be a rather good substitute instead of 12 Beast. Disappointing that 12 Beast doesn't have an anime though
@nicholbrownshayne7 жыл бұрын
yugoxgc "Plot with an actual story", "no real plot to speak of" what do those even mean? EVERY plot has a story and not every plot needs to be action packed or dramatic to be entertaining, Plus monster musume is about more than just the fanservice there is a certain charm that it has with the characters, their trait, personalities and how they function in such a society if even for the sake of comedy. I swear there's hardly any love for comedy or light hearted fun nowadays.
@yugoxgc7 жыл бұрын
S Brown sigh... plot & story dont equal dramatic action. S in Monster Musume just has characters put into one house interacting & you barely have anything about how characters like that would function in our society since their world already adapts to them. Its a Harem with an interesting theme. I love it but thats it. It doesn't even actually go anywhere even after setting up the interspecies marriage idea the manga barely does anything wih it. Its Harem with Monster girls that doesn't even do the "chose me" trope of harem anime since well most of the girls dont seem to have the same interest in the Guy as Miia. Listen Im just adressing the point Arkada made about wasted "potential that we want". To put it bluntly Monster Musume getting as popular gettinh clones & 12 Beast staying an anime when it does have more to offer is a clear indicator that the majority of the community doesn't want more from these shows so much so that a more thought provoking deeper show like that would be rejected
@yugoxgc7 жыл бұрын
S Brown Also "I swear there's Hardy any love for comedy or light hearted fun nowadays" pfff ... Man are you full of it there. Did you even freaking read my comment?! I point out how a light hearted Comedy harem like Monster Musume is FAR MORE popular then an arguably more interesting manga made by the same guy & you conclude with that BS?! There's more love for that stuff especialy in Japan than anything =_=
@nicholbrownshayne7 жыл бұрын
yugoxgc "plot & story don't equal dramatic action" That's pretty much what I said y'know. "A guy makes a comic fetishising the hell out of monster girls in odd ways at that with no real plot to speak of & it gets an anime adaptation, OVA's, Shorts, Ton of Merch some ridicules with a fitting price." , My apologies for the misunderstanding there because that sentence gave me the impression that you were one of those who say that monster musume is only good because of its fanservice while bothered that 12 beast has fanservice but didn't get the same attention, plus "Cause clearly the community doesn't want better than MonMusu just more MonWaifu" did not help in giving the impression that you acknowledge it as light hearted comedy at all. Monster musume is definitely popular but in most discussions I've seen there are people in the western audience bashing it as being trashy fanservice that supports bestiality and is an example of the downfall of anime while praising anime with dark and depressing plots and stories with flashy action so highly. These same people then go "meh" when they see light hearted comedy unless it's jokes are parodies of something that they dislike. This is why i said there is hardly any love for comedy and light hearted fun nowadays.

I personally feel the fan service is far WORSE in Dragon Maid, compared to all other monster anime combined. Despite the quantity clearly not nearly being comparable. Reason being, the fan service is focused on a little boy, very, very much under age. All his discomfort is ignored for the sake of humor and breast jokes. Sexual harassment might be a humorous staple of anime, but when its coupled with pedofilla? A line has to be drawn.

Arkada, did you get a haircut? Anyways, I find A Centaur's Life interesting not because of its characters but more about its political subtext. The anime has these little references to how the government perceives and deals with discrimination, with a reference to the "American Communist Party" or something similar at one point because everybody is so hooked up on the idea of equality between races. Probably the anime isn't really a focus on its characters or its attempts to explain monster girls or provide some emotional heart to it but rather it uses its many-raced cast as a vehicle to explain a world where the extreme left is practically the norm and how it can affect society (i.e. criminal punishment for microaggressions, overly-leftists propaganda, forced equity and equality in society, thought policing). I mean, it's all subtext, hidden behind the whole monster-girl slice-of-life-iness it's presenting, which is perfectly fine because I like some of the characters in the show, but it kind of makes me wonder about it... Probably because much of the political subtext I can associate with America's status right now with leftist mentality dominating much of popular society, and I'm smack dab right in the middle of a college where left-leaning students protest practically every other day and all my teachers shove their leftist political views down our throats.

Oh, no, shoving morals down people's throats again! So here's the thing: this isn't some right wing message to the world. It's a story about a dystopia. It's not just the discrimination laws - a signpost in one panel says that people caught littering will be SHOT ON SIGHT. The agenda here is clearly trying to examine how people as products of dystopic environments might interact with one another. In addition, the work itself subtly but viciously condemns the racism problems our own world has, by way of that biology lesson I won't spoil. Also everyone's happy about Centaur Barack Obama being elected so *shrug*

The actually focus of Cenaur's Life seems to not be what is in the foreground, but what you get in the background. We have an agency against discrimination that seems to make everything that could be construed as discrimination (no matter how miniscule or far fetched it is) into a crime that could land you into a correctional facility or even prison! And these undertones are in basically every episode. Riding on a centaur? Discrimination! -> Prison Being afraid of the "smile" of the Sanke People because it looks like she was going to eat her? Discrimination! -> Prison Not having any Centaur Models in your magazin? Discrimination! -> Prison That world is freaking terrifying. I personally see it as a social comment on how our world is currently progressing with its whole "Political Correctnes" fetish of many people and how everything nowadays seems to be discriminatory. When I see "Centaur's Life" and hear these comments when someone says "This sounds like discrimination" or so I'm always afraid that in the not so near future this could be our world, where free speech is dead and where anything that aknowledges the difference between people might get send you to prison. So in this terms "Centaur's Life" is completely unique because, while it seems to be "unremarkable" on the surface, the undertone and the world they created is, at least for me, a nightmare based on current, ideas and ideals taken to the extreme where really anything you say can and will be used against you no matter the context.

I hate when anime youtubers talk about a genre they have ZERO idea about or the fucking boom in which it happened. At least understand why people would like the world of Monster Musume and not just because of tits. It actually has pretty good, fleshed out races. From harpies forgetting stuff fast, to the Spider Girls having the ability to Knit like a professional without any lick of training, also they get drunk from caffeine/coffee which i found funny. Every race has some sort of nuance to them and not just for them to have big tits for people to stare at. Sure that's something to draw people in, but the designs of the creatures are quite remarkable for a series just about fanservice. Also, stop treating monster girls like they were popular from those shows, they were quite popular way before those shows even existed, hell, Monster Musume already had a big fallowing before the anime took off. You could even say those shows only got popular because of the huge fandom the Monster Girl community has. One of the more popular works was Monster Girl Quest, a Monster Girl game that was made with collaboration with a shit ton of artists and a shoe lace budget which actually had a really good story. Then you have the Monster Girl Encyclopedia, a book detailing monster girl races and what exactly they do, though, it's basically just a glorified reason to describe most of their sex life.

Hell, Monster Musume is so big it managed to be a top seller in the New York times in America two years BEFORE the anime ever hit. That's on the same list as Bleach and Attack on Titans. And so you could easily assume the fans had a huge impact on the Genre making the point relevant on how it got so popular.

GR, I think you're missing a great deal of what makes Centaur's Life great. While a you may think of its dystopian world as just a premise, it actually serves as a great thought experiment on the extend of social control needed to conform such morphologically diverse population into a functioning society. That, and also the world building aspect of the show that other shows seems to sacrifice to make room for more T&A and highschool drama.
@MonfangHowlett7 жыл бұрын
@Glass_Reflection You dropped the Ball. For a moment, I had thought you were picking up on the deeper subjects of the show. But then you seemed to suggest that the only time discrimination is brought up is with the snake girl. It's not. From the first episode, the show makes subtle references and we are shown subtle hints of the deeper mechnizations of the world these girls live in. While runninng for gym class, sheep girl makes mention about wantinng nto ride Hime-Chan but is swiftly rebuked, beinng ntold that even talking about such a thing is discriminatory and would land her in a re-education center a la any tyranical government. From then on, we recieve more and more subtle hnts : The Magical Girlepshow we see hints of being a propaganda tool for promoting the idea of the majority bowing to the will of the minority, the various childrens books that all end with forming democracies instead of just "Happily Ever After", the talk about people beinng sent to jail and/or having theri businesses shut down for accidently cutting off an angel's hair halo. Even going so far as to call the US Democratic party Communists. It's clear to see that the author's intentions are not to show us a normal monster girl show, but instead to make a political statement. This show is a warning, a cautionary tale, as to what happens when we surrender our right to Speech to the Government and let them take too much control. The biggest sign of this oppression occurs in tnwo points. First, when the teacher was giving the exposition dump about the evolutionary path that dned with her looking disgruntally two government officals overseeing her class after she finished with a speech about discrimination. And another point where snake girl gets blight pop to her nose and plain clothes agents pull out guns, includinng a shotgun, ready to blow a high school girl away for touchinng her.This is a story about characters living with a veil around them. One that makes them and us see a happy and normal society. But sometimes the wind blows the right way, and we can se the dystompia behind the veil.

This reminds me of a fanfic i read called Romancer of the Occult. The summary was something like: Pinkameda Insignas is your average high-school girl who loves life. Plot-twist she’s a werewolf princess and she needs to fall in love with an approved in order to save her kingdom. And her potential love interests are a Vampire, a Zombie, a Demon, a Ghost, a Chimera, a Cthulhu, and a Human. It was really good if i remember correctly as it treated all the characters (including the human) as being equally odd-balls

The snakegirl thing is major cringe. No shit I'm gonna be afraid of an open mouth half a foot away from my face! But muh microaggressions!
@Genderkaiser7 жыл бұрын
TheTwilitHero Because that's the real take away from a touching story about a girl trying to overcome the prejudices imposed on her by the society she was brought up in. Microagressions. Brilliant.

So what you're saying is that if I wake up tomorrow with a bunch of guys in loinclothes pointing spears in my face I shouldn't be afraid because Cannibal Holocaust is a controversial movie? The human race will assuredly die out if people like you keep breeding.
@sarafontanini70517 жыл бұрын
yes but the reason the centaur girl gives has less to do with something liek that and more to do with finidng snake people in general scary because of this one scary movie she saw. even a normal snake person just standing normally in a fashion magazine gave her the willies, if I remember right. and your comparison to an image of a tribal figure is...not really the same thing. The snake girl cannot help that her smile looks scary to others, she's not intentionally going up to people trying to look threatening (spears are not part of the body and can be put away, for goodness sake). It seems to me there's actually two problems the characters face: the snake girl faces problems due to her people being extremely foreign and only recently attempting to integrate with other races (they live all the way in antarctica or something and the snake girl is the ONLY snake person attending the school) and said snake girl doesn't really know why her appearance is so scary to others, not to mention likely not knowing about social norms and how other cultures interact with each other, what she did was probably quite normal for her people. The centaur on the other hand is generally VERY timid and shy, and that's exacerbated by her own unintentioanl prejudices formed from when she was a child. She herself denies being prejuidiced because she had no idea her attitude WAS prejudiced, which is a REAL PROBLEM in REAL LIFE.

Sara Fontanini so you are saying it is prejudiced to faint when suddenly seening an open mouth lined with teeth which is big enough to swallow you head and torso? my friend that is called a fear response.

It's okay. The tolerance brigade only survive until they turn a blind eye and tolerate the things that dont mind having them dead. And then someone holds a memorial service and demands penance out of others, for their idiocy. The INJUSTICE OF IT ALL THAT WE CAN'T ABANDON COMMON SENSE FOR TOLERANCE'S SAKE. x.x;

Heyo GR - not sure how much manga you read, but as far as the monstergirls(and boys) stuff goes, I think the best series I've seen so far is Beastars, even though it hasn't really..found it's mark just yet, I think? It approaches stuff from a more interseting angle, at least, so if you've any interest in the stuff, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on it!

This is where I unsub. I respected (albeit begrudgingly) that you gave DragonMaid a Buy It rating. That was your opinion and you are certainly welcome to it. But to claim that series set a new bar is overkill. There is a load of hypocrisy here in that MKDM did use a lot of the same tropes as other series; hell, I dropped the series five episodes in because it ripped off elements from "The Devil is a Part Timer." Every justification I have seen in defense of that series were either because moe or because KyoAni. It's obvious people are clinging to hype.

Aaaand here we go. Please apply that logic to all of the people who claimed to drop "A Centaur's Life" and see how far you get.

I've never bothered with this kind of anime but is it worth unsubbing to him for just one of his opinions?
@MKollerSMS7 жыл бұрын
In my personal opinion (not judging anyone else's), it is. Gigguk went the same route on a different piece and I unsubbed from him too. Whenever something is hyped by the masses, it does feel like popular reviewers are too reluctant to point out the flaws of a work, in spite of the fact that is exactly what keeps the hype going. My problems with his Maid-Dragon review were that, having watched the series, I did notice many tropes which were done on the laurels of other anime (such as "The Devil is a Part Timer!"). These were completely ignored by reviewers such as Arkada because it detracted from the narrative of "Moe girls in a lesbian family relationship that's moe." Yes, it was cute, we get it. As far as actual substance, other slice of life works such as Tamako Market and even YuruYuri's third season still have it beat. And on the subject of TDiaPT, while Arkada did give it a "Buy" rating, he was a lot more honest in that review. The difference being TDiaPT was never hyped. Now, maybe I'm completely wrong here, and Arkada genuinely believes that Dragon-Maid was the second coming of KyoAni. But to call it the second coming of Anime itself? That's where I personally jump ship.
