Hello Comrades! There are many types of characters in Overlord - some smart, some stupid; but what I like about them, is that they all behave in accordance to their IQ. Unlike in other shows, there are no intelligent people making dumb mistakes or vise versa, so lets talk about all of their intelligence archetypes in detail.

I like Ainz archetype more. He second guesses himself often, but never doubts himself and always tries to make the best of any situation. He might not realize that he actually is as smart as he is but he always puts his best foot forward and listening to his inner monolog makes his general inexpressiveness more endearing.

The great thing about Phillip was that Albedo and Demiurge was completely baffled at what he did, and thought that the kingdom might have an incredible strategy that they haven't throught of. But it's just Ainz who said that he might be just stupid. Demiurge also acknowledged that it's far easier to manipulate a person with above average intelligence, but it's nearly impossible to do the same for a complete fool, because you just can't reliably predict their actions.

Its not that hard to predict them, just imagine an ego (pride) filled person who thinks they are smart doing things impulsively with little thought. you might not be able to precisely guess what they do, but it gives you a basic idea.

One thing I like about Ainz is that he never really comes off like an idiot who need everything spoon-fed or had bouts of plot enabling idiocy. Just exactly what he is supposed to be; an average joe who is showed into a position that is way over he has any experience (which is why he often uses modern incorporate management system because that's his closest point of reference to an actual leadership- he was chosen as a second guild master mostly because he was even tempered and generally agreeable, not because he was some charismatic leader by birth) he is really good when dealing with things he knows (like games mechanics and PvP) and can pull this wise overlord schtick because he was into roleplaying and played that character for years. But when operating outside of his wheelhouse or under time crunch he will not make the optimal decisions because most of people won't.

Yes and as for me it is really interesting that nobody in the world understands his actions. As you said, Ains often acts relying on modern incorporate management but nor denizens of nazaric nor new worlders simply don't understand this pattern

you also have to keep in mind that in Ainz’s original world he doesn’t have an education beyond the high school level because of the corporate overlords controlling the pricing of schooling making his corporate know how his only real strength

Finally someone talking about this aspect of Overlord. Having read the LN twice now I can say that the thing that makes the series soo great is the way the characters are built and how their inteligence plays into every movement of the plot, and by that very reason Volume 10 is my favorite, because it centers on Jircniv and his overthinking, coupled with Ainz's supernatural way of acting that makes everything fall into place. Edit: And hot damn I forgot his talk with Ainzach, that shit always gets me giddy after reading it. Anyways, great vid.

A thing to remember about Ainz/Momonga is he comes from a real dystopia and in a side story iirc about the real world, its mentioned his parents worked themselves massively just to put him through elementary school. So he is achieving this naturally high brain moves with an elementary level education. It's also why in Issekai quartet he is genuinely happy to go to high school while at the same time struggling because it is a schooling he never had access to.

People often complain that overlord is boring because "MC is OP and there no matching opponent" but this show is not a shonen, it is not about it. Overlord is a bunch of stories of what different people do in almost the same situation but according to their own inteligence, experience and perspective

Yup. It reads more like an anthology with some reoccurring characters, but more focused on the how the world functions through snippets of different character’s POV. it is part of what i love and hate about overlord. You get a nice build up of a bunch of different characters in one book and then they might just disappear into the background in the following books.

Most villains downfall came from arrogance or a factor they fail to comprehend. And since Ainz is a villain protagonist it stands to reason.

I find it funny when people talk about Ramposa as a good king. He was the king of drugs, slavery, forced conscription, the big R, slave labour, random killing and enslaving of civilians. Those things were common under his rule and only started changing when Renner and Zanac gained influence. It is these policy changes that caused the split into the noble and royal factions. That split isn't a decades long running issue, but a fairly recent one of the last years in the kingdom. There is a reason the protectors of humanity deemed the kingdoms current system irredeemable despite the recent improvements. The reason they tried to kill Gazef was not because they disliked him, but to accelerate the governments fall to replace it with one that does its job of protecting humans. The people that know the truth of the world fight day in and out to prevent humans from being turned into livestock for far more powerful races allowed the kingdom to be and even helped in its creation. Yet Ramposa fucked up so much that they said, well this cannot go on, we gotta do something when his shit even started to spread outside of the kingdom.

@@mahistv The biggest plot issue this come with is Gazef himself. His eternal loyalty to Ramposa makes no sense considering the horrors the peasants had to live in under his rule. I am not exactly sure about the time frame when he became the head warrior, but I assume it was before Renner and Zanac gained influence. The reason Barbaro was the why he was, was because he was the spoiled first child that didn't know a different kingdom, which is why he had connections with the eight fingers. The eight fingers continued the decadent noble lifestyle he was used to all his life.

@@oviiembem6302 Morally good is something I doubt unless his was entirely incompetence. He had decades under his belt were the people suffered under his reign until his late born second and third child came along. For those decades he was the sole ruler of the nation. The fact that he chose to protect a corrupt noble over the people even after witnessing the war at the katze plains is a clear indicator of who he is at his core and that even tens of thousands of people are not the even closely the same worth to him as one of his nobles. He also didn't offer himself out of a sense of responsibility, but because he knew he already lost his power to his son. I would say that his second and third child caused him to soften up in the recent years.

@@seynoonrae2474 nobody knows his past since it wasn't shown, all I know is during his reign in the novel and anime (when he was old) he might have been a tyrant during his younger years, but as depicted in the show and source, he is trying to be a good person even if it is only to look good for his children. So at that point, his direction in life is morally good, but he lacks the capability to make it work.

In Riyuro's defense, he was willing to negotiate, but Shalltear was expecting a quick yes or no answer. And it makes sense, you're not going to submit to someone you've neither seen nor heard of just like that. It took Jircniv a while to realize, Riyuro didn't even have 30 seconds to think about it. And as soon as he saw the power of his enemies, he quickly acted to meet the requirements they demanded of him. An excellent leader.

A bad situation to be in with little chance of it going much better than it did. They barely wanted to follow the dragons and switching to a different tyrant wasn’t going to happen peacefully. Dude knew his tribe would absolutely try to rebel eventually. without a show of force. Didn’t help that shalltear was itching to fight and reclaim some of her pride from being brainwashed. I do however love how Riyuro and the Blood Emperor are now trama buddies. In some way, they also enjoy being in situation since leading is a stressful job. Now if they get any push back, they pull out the old reverse Karen trap card of “got a problem, go speak to my supervisor.” And they absolutely know no one is going to man up and go over to the Ainz stronghold to file a complaint.

One of my favourite theories, that Ainz IS ACTUALLY a super high IQ being because the character of Momonga was originally made for Roleplay and being Super Smart WAS part of his character's "lore" Aka Flavor text, and as we know flavor text can become real in the New World.

I honestly don't think the playable characters would have had any lore written about them. Most games wouldn't want you to make too much of a backstory for your character, but instead have you create their story while playing the character. It is possible though, but I personally like the fact that most of his actions are truly made by the guy that was transported into his avatar's body, but simply got greatly influenced by the nature of his character's race and abilities. Like how his emotions get suppressed and he doesn't care much about human lives thanks to his nature as an undead. The lore of his race would have a say on how he reacts, but that would be it.

Phillip is the embodiment of an experienced player fighting a noob in a game. The fear of it comes from the fact that you can more or less guess where most enemies you fight will go to the best spots. Noobs tho can be literally anywhere. They can be on the first point despite everyone else being on 3rd or they can be perfectly right behind you once your team leaves to do something else. There's no way to know what they are doing or going because they don't have any clue themselves

Every action, literally every action performed by almost every single character in Overlord follows some line of reasoning, even including Phillip, mind you. This goes even harder when it comes to combat. Sometimes, I think adding inner monologues to the anime would've filled many gaps left by those hasty adaptations.

I think Shalltear is actually supposed to be dumb as she often needs things explained even when everyone else understands without an issue. She is built for combat and she excells at it, having only been beaten once in all of Ainz Ooal Gown's Yggdrasil days, during the raid that had over 1500 players and NPCs. She does begin learning later but oh well...

There's an aspect that you also must consider when considering the nobles. Remember, only a few people survived the incident with the empire. It was a slaughter after all. Most of the nobles “Mr. Satan” the idea of a massive spell killing everyone. So in essence, it was more than just their stupidity. Their refusal to believe it was more than a trick of the empire caused them to be arrogant. Even after receiving the reports, the nobles refused to believe anything that was told to them. Now consider the second-hand nobles who weren't raised with the intelligence of the first group, nor were they privy to the first-hand account of what happened, and you have a recipe that's doomed to fail the country

One thing we should remember about the Workers of Baharuth, is that their presence in Nazarick /was/ a scheme by Ains. He specifically planted rumors about a newly discovered crypt to attract them to Nazarick. He did this for two reasons to assess the Workers abilities and strength as well as to have a reason to formally contact Jirkniv. Ains, or rather his player, is an intuitive intelligence. While not a planner or schemer per se he does know how to put a plan into action to accomplish a goal.

AFO not pouncing on Overhaul is dumb, but him making a giant superfist to beat All Might does make sense on two points. 1 It's about sending a message and beating All Might at his own game. 2Beating All Might then and there wasn't necessary, and just exposing that All Might wasn't All Might 24/7 was something AFO expected to be a victory in and of itself. Oh sure, the ideal outcome for AFO would have been shattering Toshinori's toothpick frame live on news being broadcast nationally, but AFO makes lots of plans and layers. He didn't just make a giant superfist, he went in with psychological warfare. He did underestimate Toshinori, but hubris is the classic villain failing (often paired with sadism for that personal touch), and if not for All Might learning from Deku, AFO would have won with his cheap tricks giving him openings for raw power. Raw power that wasn't even the main basket he was stockpiling resources in!

Yes. The dragon Lord that was using this armor is about lvl 95, Ainz-sama is 100, maybe even higher since he has done so much in the New World. Also, Pandora was fighting at 80% Ainz-sama's strength, so there is that. Also, ALSO, Bone Daddy has way more tools at his disposal like World Items.

14:01 where it gets even more interesting once you think (sorry for making this political) that the US is Ainz in WWII. where we didn't really "conquer" them normally, like we didn't take over the whole island and hold it for two years. no we just landed some teams on some islands to get a foothold and then just nuked them twice. and mind you no japanese doctor knew what radiation burns where or hell, any doctor at the time. where the patient still died not from the burns but of organ failure.

The reason all for one went the way he did was because he's supremely arrogant, he doesn't just want to rule the world, he thinks it's his RIGHT so much so that it's a far gone conclusion. His Achilles heal is his ego. He gets off on manipulating others and bending people to his will so they feel like they need him or worship him. He wouldn't use overhaul because he didn't want to share the spotlight, and overhaul would never have fully submitted or allowed himself to be mentally manipulated no matter how all for one tortured him. Thats the entire point I think, is to show that ultimately all for one is a weak man who can only truly feel strong when he manipulated the weak willed or broken to make himself feel like a god. This was actually pointed out by all might somewhat in the last episode. All for one likes to THINK he's the smartest man in the room, but as the saying goes, that usually means the opposite. He's spent so long thinking his victory is such a sure thing and that everyone else is an ant. Which made him make critical mistakes. His choices are actually 100 percent in line with his character, and it mirrors real life, too. People who act like him tend to fail the hardest.

I got a good question, when did all for one learn too make duplicate quirks, if he recently got it like a year or half ago, then he wouldn’t give himself shock absorber ability. But if he had it for ages, then it is a plot hole. But I can say one thing I like about all for one. He is different from the other villians, he is pure evil, I do like the trait, where he talks about, where he enjoys reading comics about being the demon king, it is child like. Many people wish to be the demon king, one of those people, is the guy who created demiurge in overlord, where he wanted to roleplay as pure evil. But all for one is not a Genius, I think he wanted to be the evil genius, he may be smart, but not a genius, he just has an ego. Because he wanted to be the demon king.

3:28 "His main attribute is intelligence" This isn't true, the intelligence stat doesn't exist in within Yggdrasil. Yggdrasil has: - hp - mp - physical attack - physical defense - magic attack - magic defense - agility ---- movement speed ---- fly speed ---- attack speed ---- jump height - Resistances ---- elements ---- bludgeoning ---- slashing ---- piercing Intelligence also doesn't have anything to do with Magic Attack. We don't see any correlation between the two throughout the series. Some like Albedo is very smart despite having low Magic Attack. Same with Renner who is a very low level, but has intelligence rivaling some of the best in Nazarick.

I honestly hate how the anime lays on the "I'm dumb" joke. The novel painted Ainz quite a bit smarter and somewhat darker character that fit a lot better with an idea of a PK guild guildmaster.

As a first time viewer of this channel, I can say one thing for sure. You really are an anime only. You are missing a great deal of context from the characters motivations, reactions, & thoughts. Jirniv's anxiety is explained if you'd had read the light novels. Let's not forget that Ainz (Satoru) only has an elementary grade education & a salary man. Giving a presentation to Dwarves is within his old world level of knowledge. We can go on....

Phillip's friends aren't that stupid. Unless I misunderstood...they were working for for Ilma (and by extension, Albedo) and were instigating Phillip to do something stupid so as to give Nazarick justification for the war. Unless I'm mistaken, they knew this was a bad idea but also knew they'd be safe because it was all Albedo's idea.

No, that isn't the case, Philip attacking Ainz's caravan wasn't planned by Albedo nor Demiurge. It was an unexpected surprise. That is why they were so confused about what was happening, thinking that 8 fingers betrayed them or it could be an attack of the kingdom. Those 2 nobles are just part of the faction of useless nobles Albedo ordered Hilma to put together so they could easily get rid of them when the time came, but Philip's low IQ flipped all plans on their heads. And the rest is a nice misunderstanding by Demiurge followed by a total massacre. It's also ironic that Ainz protected a village of that kingdom from people who wanted to destroy it, but later on became the same as those people and destroyed not only 1 village but most of the nation. xD

I tought that because Albedo DID put together a faction of nobles to use that those two were part of, the fact the Sorcerer Kingdom was looking for an excuse to destroy Re-Estize, and the fact the plan was so unbelievably stupid I can't immagine more than one person having that idea...I thought they orchestrated it but were just surprised at HOW it happened, rather than the fact it happened (Like, they were : "He can't possibly be that stupid...right ?" But they knew someone was gonna do something eventually).

Get the stupid and lackluster power hungry nobles in one faction, give them support to take over government, and either let it implode (because you got rid of all the competent people) or control it from the shadows. This faction was supposed to be managed by the female in the 8 fingers crime organization, but you can’t manage impulsive idiotic power hungry people 24/7. The attack on the cavaran was also a bit of a failed set up because you sort of had 3 opposing ideas. The idiot noble wanted to take over the cavaran supplies and look “strong” in the eyes of his government so he planned the attack. 2 other nobles were with him, but they were smart enough to know this was a terrible idea and were going to throw him under the bus. Idiot noble would attack, the other 2 nobles would then sweep in and stab the guy in the back with their own armed forces to gain support from their government and look nice to Ainz’s country. Then you got actual people running the cavaran, which is the 8 fingers so they certainly had the power to stop the attack if they wanted. Issue is you got the 8 finger security team being attacked by the pawn of another of their own faction’s pawn that has direct ties with albedo’s plan. Can’t correct your mistake if you kill the guy and you weren’t supposed to. So they ditched the cavaran. Wasn’t the way they were going to destroy the kingdom, but they were going to destroy it either way. The “carrot and the stick.” Blood emperor got the carrot. The kingdom got the stick.
