I can't believe you've never seen this before!! One thing I love in this special is how when Linus gets to the middle of the Christmas story when Linus talks about the angel's words, he lets go of his blanket... and is not holding his blanket for the whole rest of the tale. It's a small detail, but a really clever one.

Fun fact: Fake Christmas trees were gaining in popularity in the early 1960s, and Charles Schultz hated them. He wrote this script partly in protest of them, and the public picked up on it...to the point that demand for metal, artificial Christmas "trees" dropped at once and never recovered.

"Isn't there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?" "Sure, Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about. Lights, please..." And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, "Fear not: for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." - Luke 2 : 8-14 (KJV) "That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown." Merry Christmas! ✝️ 🙏 🎄 🎁 Fun Fact: First animated Peanuts special. Flock By Night Fact: Snoopy's (Bill Melendez) dog house is blue in this special, but in subsequent specials it is red. Tidings Of Great Joy Fact: Idiotic, tone deaf CBS executives greeted Vince Guaraldi's jazz score as an intrusion in the special that audiences would never accept. Born This Day Fact: Cathy Steinberg, who did the voice of Sally Brown, had not yet learned to read at the time of production, so she had to be fed her lines, often a word or syllable at a time, which explains the rather choppy delivery. The unique delivery is actually endearing. Fear Not Fact: Bill Melendez tried to talk Charles M. Schulz out of using Biblical references (especially Linus's speech) in this special. Schulz reportedly won him over. As it turned out, Linus' (Christopher Shea) recitation was hailed as one of the most powerful moments in the highly acclaimed special. In the comic strip, one of the recurring early themes was Linus' fear of reciting his Biblical passage in the Christmas pageant. Heavenly Host Fact: Apple TV+ bought the rights to the Peanuts specials in 2020, and therefore 2020 was supposed to be the first year since A Charlie Brown Christmas premiered that it would not air on free television. However, after an outcry from the public for removing the programs from free television, the specials (beginning with A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and later this special) were offered to public television stations in November and December 2020, sponsored by Apple.

Merry Christmas, Rob and Vanessa! It’s awesome that you get to see this for the first time. I love watching this special any time of year. Christmas Time Is Here is a song that makes me think of snow falling. The scene where Linus quotes the Bible hit me on a level I didn’t even register when I was younger. I think it’s amazing that this special was initially dismissed and the producers thought it would air once and never been seen again. That is so funny to think about now.

This was the very first-ever full-length Peanuts cartoon. Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz was a practicing Lutheran. Including the real meaning behind (the name) Christmas in prime time on CBS was still a gamble that it might be too religious. It was also very unusual at the time to use child actors in animation and not to use a laugh track. CBS showed this special every year from 1965 through 2000, when ABC acquired the rights. AppleTV+ bought them in 2020. Miss Chiodo was my student teacher in junior high.

growing up in the 1970's, I really identified with Charlie Brown and felt the same way he did, and I perceived that everyone treated me the same way he was treated. but as it turned out, a few years ago I was finally diagnosed with PTSD, which also brought up acute depression and acute anxiety, and that I have been suffering from it all my life, since I was a toddler in the late 1960's!

Aluminum Christmas Trees were popular in the 50's and 60's but Charles M Schultz found them rather tasteless, hence why he mocks them in the special. After this special was broadcast and became popular, aluminum Christmas tree lost their popularity and people rather wanted to have real trees at home.

Charlie Brown was really an educational experience for me. I am 60 and grew up while Schultz was still writing it. It was important to me. Also, it this special, you should pay more attention to the music. Vince Guaraldi did the music but the crew were late putting it all together. I believe they had a test copy for the CBS executives a day or two before it was to air. The execs were freaked out and said the score was terrible but it was too late to do anything about it. The show aired and everyone loved the music.

10/10 Perfection...and as important as egg nog and mistletoe for the holidays This might just be the best kid's Christmas special ever. RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER and HOW THE GRINCH STOLE Christmas are very, very close but I think I'd give this film the nod for two major reasons. First, the music by Vince Guaraldi is amazing--and one of the best sound tracks ever. Second, Charles Shultz insisted that this Christmas special actually talk about the REAL meaning of Christmas--with a reading from Luke of the Christmas story. Oddly, studio executives were apparently worried this might offend people! Imagine the gall of mentioning Jesus in a Christmas story!! This special is also amazing because it was the first Charlie Brown cartoon and subsequent films using the characters never quite matched this first great film and its success led to these other Peanuts films.

I do appreciate that you two put yourselves out there for your videos, truly as I often enjoy your reactions. That said I have to admit that this reaction left a bad taste in my mouth. While it was likely an unintended cut for the video’s length, you left out the very beginning and end of Linus’ recitation of Luke 2. The reading says “fear not” and “on Earth peace and good will toward men”, even if you ignore the entire story those two phrases would mean so much to Charlie Brown in this very story. As all through the special every instance of good will that people would do would be for selfish reasons; and chances for spontaneous love and generosity (such as giving Charlie Brown a Christmas card) were outright ignored. Throughout the whole special the one person that was by his side was Linus, so it would make sense that Charlie wouldn’t just listen to what his friend had to say but believe what he said. Linus while in the spotlight expressed a great deal of humility in his recitation, because he could have given advice that was his own that said the same thing. Advice that SO many people can say because it’s become commercialized and put in the mouths of Santa and whoever else. Linus gave him the source where that phrase came from. A story (that a person can believe or not) that was thousands of years old, and has persisted to the present saying the same. That always gave me hope during my hard times during the holidays. It meant that someone, somewhere a long time ago may have felt how I feel about the world. How can there be good in a selfish world? And they found a way to keep going in hope, and passed that hope on to others and to me and Charlie Brown. So having cut out those bits was a bit odd to me, but maybe you guys didn’t see it that way. The salt was making fun of Linus and his faith, even though it was all he had in an attempt to help his friend. And perhaps there’s the added sting that I wonder, would you say if any other faith was expressed in a show? I don’t see that you’ve reacted to “The Prince of Egypt” or “The Ten Commandments”, both of which are special to me as a Catholic but also are special to those of Jewish faith as they imply in the former and explicitly explain in the latter (even to a small degree like Linus’ recitation here) about Passover. It wasn’t just a ritual to remember the last day of the bondage of God’s people in Egypt, but a moment to glorify God for their salvation from that bondage. Would you ask then if the sermon was over? I wouldn’t want to, even if I don’t believe in what someone else does. As the meaning of Christmas is still to me “on Earth peace and good will to men”, and I want to keep that all my life. And part of that love is being honest with our fellow man too; that the mocking came off as mean-spirited and hypocritical being targeted towards Christianity. And that doesn’t feel like much good will at all to me. Well, I said my piece. I hope it didn’t come off as anything other than constructive criticism; as it was intended to be out of generosity. So I’ll end say wholeheartedly: Merry Christmas, with all the best I can wish for you both.
@j.woodbury412 Жыл бұрын
I totally agree. To me it seemed like they were almost mocking Linus' quoting of scripture, especially when he said "Is the sermon over?" It was like he was saying "Okay, we got that out of the way, not let's get back to the story">
