Why was this film such a flop with audiences and critics in 1947? Who knows? Two more bombs in their initial release that are considered masterpieces now are Duck Soup with the Marx Brothers (1933) and The Wizard of Oz (1939). It’s hard to believe those films lost money, but that’s apparently true.

@@allensaunders449Allen, you are correct that religion often twists things and makes a mess. Jesus, the Jewish Messiah is the one I follow and I wonder if you ever considered the writings of Isaiah in the Jewish scriptures. This was written 700 years before Jesus, who was he writing about? Isaiah 53 Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem. 4 Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 8 By oppression[a] and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished.[b] 9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes[c] his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand. 11 After he has suffered, he will see the light of life[d] and be satisfied[e]; by his knowledge[f] my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,[g] and he will divide the spoils with the strong,[h] because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

This movie flopped at the box office and didn’t become popular until 1974, when a clerical error caused it to enter the public domain, which allowed television stations to air it freely, ultimately leading to its widespread popularity as a Christmas classic today. This happened due to a simple oversight by the film's copyright holder at the time, Republic Pictures. Because the copyright wasn't renewed, the film became available for any television station to broadcast without paying licensing fees.

When Jimmy Stewart returned from WW2 he thought he'd tanked his movie career by being off screen for four years and when he opened the first script the studio sent him after the Air Force he thought the studio had reached the same conclusion. Just because you return the money doesn't forgive the crime. And yes, I've seen the movie several times a year since 1989. Probably between 50-100 times,not counting partial viewings when someone else was watching it.

Technically, if you are charged with embezzlement from a bank, you can't just "repay" the money they think you stole and then the charges go away. I think George and Uncle Billy would be fine in court if they just admitted Uncle Billy lost the money. Billy is a guy who "forgot" to go to George's wedding and that was when he was relatively young and virtually everyone in town could testify to that.
@Mamadukes195321 сағат бұрын

@@Mamadukes1953 Of course it's a movie and so that is why it has such an unrealistic ending. They could have re-written the end of the Titanic movie to say that aliens rescued Jack from the sea...but that would have been unrealistic and would have raised a few eyebrows as a result. As a viewer we are supposed to willingly suspend our disbelief, but that doesn't mean we have to be open minded to the point where we can never question anything.

Apparently the original ending of "It's a Wonderful Life" was very dark, completely opposite of what we see today. The whole thing with Clarence the guardian angel turned out to be a drunken hallucination, and George Bailey actually spent many years in prison for embezzlement, divorcing his wife, with the uncle who lost the money becoming an alcoholic. George's friends and family ultimately turned their backs on him in his hour of need, refusing to give any money at all. The evil Mr. Potter, taking advantage of the tragic situation, quickly moved to buy out the bankrupt "Bailey Savings and Loan" bank, and then Mr. Potter ends up marrying George Bailey's ex-wife Mary, who could not turn down Potter's proposal out of financial desperation, spending the rest of her days in a loveless marriage, as a trophy wife, with the kids growing up to be selfish, spoiled brats. However, this darker ending did not go over well with test audiences, and so it was changed to the delusional "feel good" ending that we have today. Ok, so I may have made this whole "original ending" story up, but you know it would have been far more realistic. Merry Christmas!
