Nice...Still rocking my 13” helical lunchbox planer, haven’t found a 20” helical in my price range yet. Needed to flatten a bunch of walnut so I added some 10’ rails to my torsion box assembly/outfeed table and built a router sled and bought a 1-1/2” surfacing bit from Amana tool (rc-2250). Now I can do up to about 44” x 110”or so. Definitely not as fast as a planer but can handle large slabs or glue up’s if needed. Plan to build a planer sled down the road when I upgrade my planer. About to build a jointer sled for the table saw to straighten some of these really wonky pieces and rip off live edge. Of course for larger rips I do have my track saw.

Hello Nathan, I used to have a sled like yours but without the bar clamp. No matter which way you use a sled the result is good lumber and dead flat. I decided to buy a combination machine from Grizzly a few years ago and it is capable of twelve inches wide, more than enough for my needs. I really like the way you explain what you are doing in a manner that most folks can understand and possibly increase the joy of woodworking. I’ve been woodworking since middle school when a shop teacher thought I had good hand to eye coordination. That was 60 years ago. I’m retired and every day I spend a few hours in the shop. Keep up the excellent videos and Happy Holidays, better known as Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Merry Christmas. Very Best Regards Fred Thomas

Drill a hole through the clamp handle from side to side and run a rod through to make a T-handle. It’ll be easier to open and close. I enjoyed the idea and the video enough to subscribe.

Try covering the jig with 5 ml plastic, put a thick layer of quick set dry wall mud then another sheet of plastic. Set slab on top and press, this will fill in all of the voids, once set you have a perfect fit. Run thru planner and presto. (18 pounds will run you around $10.00)

Nathan, I'm assuming that you're not heating in that shed. What about porting the dust blower outside to a bin to keep it from taking up space in the shed and keeping the dust out? That's what I do with my mill planer as it makes a ton of chips. I port it out into a 4'x4'x8' box, and it can still fill it pretty fast. I then burn all the chips in my vortex burn barrels on a wet day. Planer chips burn fast, but you need to do it on a wet day as it cam put out some fireflies.

Why not just use a row of holes with a peg in the trailing end a clamp like one of the Festool low profile ones like for the MFT? Or just a second peg/bench dog and a wedge on the leading end? I like the idea, thanks for posting. The base needs to be strong enough to resist twisting. Thanks for twisting.
