@@leadiususa7394 Well, you can caption it "Cheap SAS to Sata Cable from Newegg. Trying to test a SAS drive to normal PC. FAILED!" that's it. "A cheap way to test just one SAS drive when they fail" is misleading because the drive you tested didn't actually been properly tested because the cable will not work on normal PC. Cheers

@@leadiususa7394 I don't think you did. You said neither HBA nor RAID cards would be good for testing. Also you indicate that you connect "the SATA cable" to the motherboard. (I have never seen external SAS connectors on a mainboard so I assume you connected "the SATA cable" to a SATA port.) The best you could hope for is an error indicating that the disk fails to speak SATA. Which is clear from the outset. Just admit you have no clue

No problem , remember that SAS drives need SAS controllers to see them, SATA controllers will not see a SAS drive even if you use a SATA bridge cable like this one. SAS controllers can come with SATA connectors so that is why this works. /:> Enjoy!

If the add-on has the correct added SAS HBA/RAID mode loaded then yes it would work but you need the license key to enable it. If it a straight setup then no. It would work only like a SATA basic controller. Many motherboards have a license you can get to enable the SAS controller mode but I am not sure about your version. You need to research it more. There are so many versions out there these days and some, you can't get the license key any more. That is why I used a 9200 LSI SAS controller for many efforts to get around all of that headache... /:> Hope this helps!

BTW: Why do I have the feeling one reply is going to say YES and the other NO however I am leaning towards why not with the proper hardware, is this an official adaptor made by some or many or least even one company that cares enough or "has to care" or just some random thrown together Chinese part that does work ATM and actually looks decently built, although I prefer my SATA's to be black with the snap in ends on BOTH-SIDES… I love to learn though and even read two intellectuals on any given subject of interest to me “go at it” and it is great when they are BOTH RIGHT-as sometimes it happens, but how can this be? I've a four bay SAS Bay on a Reliant Server using Windows Server. But from the back the Bay is connected via SATA to the motherboard. I've four IBM 4TB drives set in BIOS to RAID but none show up! I honestly thought the motherboard had some SAS/SATA controller chip that I wasn't aware of! I saw one on Amazon that'll let me expand up to 16 drives as on an LTT I viewed yesterday as well! Hmmmm this is a new one. Most of the time we connect to sas drives using pc tower base syste va. A laptop. I never tried to do that and didn't know that there was a USB to sas devise that would work. The key detail here is to remember that sas drive will not be by a simple sata card or on board sata on a motherboard or laptop. You need a sas hba controller because these are advanced drives. I use a lsi hba 9200 series controller to hook up to my sas drives. Let me know how it goes

NO this video is incorrect. The standard PC motherboard sata connector will NOT talk to a SAS drive regardless of the adapter cable. You need a SAS controller card in a PCIe slot and even then many motherboards cant cope with a sas controller.1) not enough power from the PCIE slot and not enough boot delay to allow the controller to boot prior to the standard boot begins. There is no controller card for a laptop. The safest way is to buy a cheap use server that has 3.5 inch sas disk bays. The other option is a SAS docking station.

Yes you are correct and I say that many times in many of my videos. But! unless you have a server level motherboard with SAS/SATA controller on board then it would work., Basic PC motherboards will not support this and that is why I recommend a LSI 9200 series SATA/SAS controller with this setup. But many people stop watching the videos to see me talk to those details. And as for laptops, I don't think that would work at all. Never tried that before... Hmm I just try. Thanks for your follow up on this.

Your are Correct. If you read in past postings I recommend that people use a SAS RAID or HBA controller for motherboards don't have SAS options. Some server boards do but rare. I recommended to everyone to use a ILS HBA - series cards with internal cable port for SATA/SAS hookup (IE the port on the controller is SATA. so you can test just one SAS drive (As long as you have the correct SAS power connector) You can test failing SAS drives one at a time away from your server. It does work and is time consuming and I have a drive test station doing that very thing. This was about testing just one SAS hard Drive. Let me know your thoughts and thanks for your feed back.

If you read and listen the video you will hear me talking to the fact you need a LSI SAS controller that has SATA/SAS connectors to connect to because most motherboard SATA controller don't support SAS. I did the video to show how you can use the SATA bridge to DAIG SAS disks one at a time. That is the role of the connector only. You can use a server motherboard for that support both SATA and SAS but most people don't have that aaialble to them. I heard that those adapters don't work because The SATA interface don't supports the SAS inteface, is that true? do you had one of your SAS drives that was recognized by windows 10?

Yes. You must use a sata sas controller or a sas controller will work. Low-end sata motherboard controllers will not work. This type cable hook up are only for NAS systems and servers. Bit I recommend cable hook up daig one SAS hard drive to check it out for errors without impacting your NAS or server.

"one TINY detail" ? Are you freaking serious? You should probably inform your viewers of that before the video so they don't waste their time watching it. But you did specifically say that you put it at the end of the video. The only reason you would do that is so your viewers do waste their time watching it. I'm guessing you're making money off of this? Cuz that's the only reason I could think of one human to want to screw another human like that.

So I have a Dell R720 that is recognizing 3 separate Enterprise 3TB SAS drives... but upon a reboot (after I clear or import the foreign HDD configs, then rebuild the VHD on the drives --- tried as RAID 1 between drives, RAID 0 as individuals, etc), all 3 fail. Being that the drives show, display the correct info in the H710 controller screen, and allow me to rebuild VHD's on them (but they get a "fault" flag from the iDrac upon restart most restarts)... I was thinking about grabbing a controller or HBA (Im still not 100% sure of diffs between those), and connecting it to another old i7 mgmt-pc setup I have in my rack. The i7 mobo is def not SAS compatible, so I was considering this: www.ebay.com/itm/155125779830?hash=item241e378d76:g:ShsAAOSwjq1hMN~T&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA8NgVqgeRnwwH%2B6ZGv6ct%2BPPXNXDsLDQ9RR1I%2Bo%2B4ddevY1RdBHBIskXHWjeBxYnmi8BWU0OR4bs3zmMPgcv4R5uyNAMqvTnnTo2S%2FPKwQWhthPl6yOf8XkTuJ88J9rpq94UbN%2BibBJ9qR29Nbo2ey4cQZimlm9UAUi18nMSw9vPA6FMx7Zk25zKVRWR9nCMJ55NU%2Be0dD1WMMuEQ2e3Db22E4dPbTbPCSlHv3l4TNgUjPB5qxbPZNvowIg8csq5eOrJX2kWp99tEKrf3CQUCVO4i0mueItDYBAkQZDuLVLk4e7Sf9KDymxV%2F5tC%2BAXjbcw%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABFBMlrifmb9h The thing is, I am not sure what else I will need to get these connected/testing. So I wanted to ask you --- would I need to get mini SAS cables and a backplane to run/connect my SAS drives to a card like the one I linked above? Or --- what about with this one? www.ebay.com/itm/125034202334?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D244769%26meid%3D3abfbdac7a0444168f1a97448a403312%26pid%3D101195%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D155125779830%26itm%3D125034202334%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DSimplAMLv11WebTrimmedV3MskuWithRevOptLambda85KnnRecallV1ModelShadowTwoCPC%26brand%3DLSI&_trksid=p2047675.c101195.m1851&amdata=cksum%3A1250342023343abfbdac7a0444168f1a97448a403312%7Cenc%3AAQAHAAABIPnNgQzrwy4hcSW%252F1r0wjcHUoW2vznLktC1ywnd%252BfgwtQMS7ujyLj2eDOBk%252F50Ne1qgZ1dSXcE24bIIJtJasc%252F0JNg9ZoBfoxG5ipKS4gKGt8oGaiJDNgsxUYY%252BowFmSnpjk21D%252BYK%252B2SbTrNkoI%252BaccNVkZiYtdGDgu1FKxQ3pAHHiILqXkr2Uh8LlbjfZWeJ3ovLKcCP6tsDdPUca%252BFPjV00%252FBNf4QmPg7rQLvvJH6Uiz6GiVFk9%252B1P%252BCZjciWtHCSUDvcadXClW3EYzmLBFVCxJS0j1WmnyBIV6a3wCNWilb%252FytZOZdCNy3CImKrDg8WJ57ypDWZDYzY3DwF%252BQF%252F9KOwU5RQpDjXlTEv6LnLcxO9Ei%252F3c1PD%252FSnL5kXhu6Q%253D%253D%7Campid%3APL_CLK%7Cclp%3A2047675 It comes w/ the cables --- but I am not sure how I would connect those cables to the SAS drive(s) w/o a backplane. Is there a cheaper way I could go about this? (possibly using my 3 "faulted" SAS drives in my mgmt-pc, which is a SATA-only mobo. Sorry for the novel. You seem like you'd know, and I am scouring the Internet trying to find a solution. I bought these 3 drives and they showed up for me the first time i loaded them in the R720, but upon 2-3 restarts (when adding other drives) the 3 SAS drives began to throw faults. So I wanted to figure a cheap solution, that I could possibly make permanent if I can get the drives to work.

Do this first. Look at my newer SAS drive test video here... kzbin.info/www/bejne/enLGkp9pgt92brs Then also check to see if the formatting of the disk drive are in 520 format (industry standard vs. PC foramt of 512 sector formatting. If so go to my other video about how to reformat SAS drives from 520 to 512 format. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWiogHR4aMt2qdU See if this helps any. Good luck! And keep having fun with this stuff adn when it gets to much go have a glass of wine or some beer and come back to it later.,... /:>

@@leadiususa7394 lol yeah that seems to be a common thread w/ this subject matter (especially servers) --- the frustration it can lead to. I ran into that w/ my last project (buying a Sonicwall and learning how to setup NAT rules, different objects to utilize in the firewall, etc) and it was a helpful exp but incredibly frustrating at times. For this project --- I will be looking over these videos and trying to get a better idea of how this all works together (and to see what parts I'd still need to get this to work). I am not familiar w/ the 520 and 512 formats so I am def interested in learning ty. I am hoping that by the end of my research, I can pickup a cheap HBA/RC and start setting my own up. This will be a great start thx again 👍
