As Georgia said, legal slavery for profit still exists in prisons today, prisoners farm fish to sell at grocery stores or work in prison factories making products, and they either don’t get paid at all or get paid like 25 cents an hour. “For Profit Prisons” should not exist, it’s deplorable.

""Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."." We have no idea what the US economy would look like without that inhumane, evil, and damaging modifier- literally built into the system which uplifts profits above people.

Yeah some of the videos of prisons in the USA, taken on smuggled in phones are shocking.. like the food , very little food ,no proper healthcare,no proper sanitary products etc Prisons in Ireland and the UK seem like hotel's compared to the American prison system.

It's only fair to pay prisoners fair wages if they in return pay room and board, and for their medical care, security etc. Which they usually don't in most cases. They just pay for overpriced commissary items.

Even not-for-profit prisons are deplorable and do more harm than good. My nephew was a sweetheart who made a bad decision when he went in, and he came out a hardened criminal. I'm actually scared of him now.

@itsalwaysteatime3803 it's a shame uk prisons aren't more like some of the other places that are hell holes. Prison shouldn't be like a holiday. That's why no one learns there lesson here.

Thank you for covering this story! I grew up in Florida and want justice for those kids. I do know the reason finding things newer than five years is difficult. Hurricane Matthew utterly destroyed Marianna and the surrounding communities. I think some shallow graves were discovered but the bodies had been strewn about during the storm. Not much has been done since as much of the grounds were destroyed leaving some parts unsafe. So until the debris is removed and so forth it is not likely we’ll see more done. Sadly the grounds are basically abandoned and nobody wants to pay to clean away the debris.

Edit: I mistakenly said Hurricane Matthew when it was actually Hurricane Michael. I apologize for the confusion.

I'm so sorry, Georgia, but as jaded as I am to most true crime, this is still one of those cases that is so haunting & so horrific, the one time I listened to a podcast about it, I cried so hard. And I couldn't stop thinking about it for weeks. So, I'm gonna have to bow out, but thanks for covering this! It's so important that people know what happened there...

28:08 reminded me of when Danielle (Drew Barrymore) quotes Sir Thomas More in the film Ever After “For if you suffer your people to be ill-educated, and their manners to be corrupted from their infancy, and then punish them for those crimes to which their first education disposed them, what else is to be concluded from this, but that you first make thieves and then punish them.”

I've both anticipated and dreaded Georgia Marie's coverage of this horrifying story from one state away. The boys of Dozier and that dreadful, bleak cemetery have haunted me since I first read about the case years ago. I struggle to understand why the exposure of this evil hasn't been a bigger bombshell story, but human corruption is sadly too common to move us as often or as much as it should. There was a very recent case where two corrupt juvenile court judges were caught over-sentencing in a "cash for kids" arrangement that netted them 2.6 million and resulted in a boy's suicide. I read one story years ago about a boy who escaped Dozier- probably the one Georgia Marie mentioned- in the forties?- and was hunted and killed- possibly shot, according to my fuzzy memory, it's been years- while he hid under a porch. His family was still searching for him in this century. Rhubarb gently reminds us that we're all together and o.k. right now.

I wanted to add: this kind of abuse was known about at its height, as it was even the subject of some social protest films like "Boy Slaves" from 1939, which occasionally runs on Turner Classic Movies.

I wonder how you can push for more and the fact they have amazes me because she put me back so many years of my life things go on in the education system still that shouldn't and I prey they get what they need and deserve hats off to there bravery ❤❤

My mom had friends who were labelled “incorrigible”. She said it was a horrifying threat in the sixties. Parents in her middle class are would regularly threaten their kids with it. My youngest siblings are twenty-five years younger than me and someone called my littlest brother(he’s taller than me now) incorrigible and my mom was really upset.

Rhubarb: Mummy! MUMMY! Quit filming and pay attention to me! In all seriousness, my nephew was in a juvenile jail in Florida in the early / mid 1990s. I'm not sure which one(s) he was in, but I know he didn't receive any emotional or psychological aid. Last I looked a couple years ago, he is in prison for something like the 17th time as an adult. I really wish Florida could have given him help when he was younger so he had the tools to be out of the cycle he is in.

I am Australian and I think what you are referring to is just her accent and way of speaking and not trying to be anything. I am not annoyed by it and didn’t even realise what you are referring to till I actually concentrated on it. Many British speakers speak like this…if you are annoyed…stop listening…. I listen to a lot of American accents in these true crime channels and find many of them hard to listen to and just plain annoying so I don’t subscribe to them . I do think it is rude of you to comment…
