This is beautiful, the attachment to this knife was outstanding. I could see how much you cared about what you were doing. I love this video. So don't take this the wrong way, but don't dunk your knife in water after heating. It just crystallizes the entire structure of the knife causing it to become brittle. Leave it to, cool at air temperature or some of the best advice I've gotten myself... stick it in a potato. It turns out great. I'm subscribing I know you're going to do some beautiful work in the future, too. :)
@draccus12311 жыл бұрын
It was not water, actually it was an oil...
@kynaston147411 жыл бұрын
Oil or whatever, it doesn't matter. Rapidly cooling the knife will cause the molecules to crystallize and that will make the knife brittle. You never want to thermal shock your blade metal with one rare exception. You have to shield the body of the knife from the bulk of the temperature change. This is usually accomplished by packing ceramic clay around the still hot knife and pouring water or what have you over the knife. This is known a differential tempering. Other than that, allowing the blade to slowly drop down to ambient temperature is the best option. This is not including incredibly exotic metals such as H1, which are work hardened, and differentially tempered by routine maintenance. I've been at knifesmithing, for a couple decades now. :)
@SingleShot457011 жыл бұрын
Adam Bodford It seems you are new to knifemaking as what he does here is correct. He first hardens the blade via an oil quench, then later he takes the brittleness out of the blade during the tempering cycle(s). ( as shown in the video with the blade in the oven).
@deadbolt901911 жыл бұрын
What he did was correct. Oil quench then tempering in an oven.
@Jigaboo12345611 жыл бұрын
I've learned and done a fair bit on working with steel, and qunching in water is correct for tempering. The process is that one normalises steel by heating it to red hot (no hotter than bright cherry) then allow it to cool at ambient temp. Next it gets hardened by heating to a dull cherry colour and then and quenching in oil. Next is tempering. first clean the metal with a file or emery paper until it shines, then gently heat the part (or all of the item if all-over temper is required) and heat it .Surface oxidisation causes it to change colour, ranging from light straw to deep blue, hardness ( but also brittleness)increases teh darker the colour). I think the colour for knives is straw,I'm sure it'll be online somewhere though.
