I really love the way this is done. I feel like this perfectly encapsulates the ending. You learn all about these people and their stories, only for them to melt away into a group again. Adding the dancers in through the mirrors was amazing to watch.

A Chorus Line is a Broadway musical that debuted in 1975, with music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban. It revolutionized musical theater with its innovative format, focusing on the personal stories and struggles of Broadway dancers auditioning for a spot in a chorus line. Set on a bare stage, the musical combines heartfelt monologues, dynamic choreography, and a stunning score, including the iconic number "One" and "What I Did for Love." The show was a massive success, running for over 6,000 performances and winning nine Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

I was probably 3 or 4 when I saw this on a VHS along with my mom, who was a stage actress. I loved everything about the movie even though I was too young to understand what it was about. Being a tiny kid in Japan I didn't know where New York was, but I swore to myself I'd someday make it there. edit 9 months later: i got a job offer and will be moving to NYC in a couple of months. i completely forgot about this comment here and it's surreal to think that when i posted it i still had no idea if i'd be able to get the immigrant visa, and a job in NY. it's been such a long fight but i finally made it. To EVERYONE out there who is chasing the goals that seem unattainable--YOU WILL MAKE IT. Please don't give up. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

@Sunday Girl Before you get that first job, that's exactly what you dream of -- just getting into a chorus line. As a dancer who worked for 25 years, but never did a Broadway show, believe me, I know. Stars are a different species, many of them never work in a chorus line to start with.

@@MrCrowebobby While that may be true, Michael Bennett specifically designed the ending to be bittersweet at best and certainly not considered a truly happy one in terms of "they got what they wished for so everything's great". A lot of the dancers in the audition are nearing the final years of their Broadway audition prospects and none of them can face answering the question Zach poses of what they will do when, like Paul, their careers as professional Broadway dancers eventually end, even as they acknowledge that it could happen at any time. After 2 hours of the audience getting to intimately know each of the 17 people standing on that line, only 8 of them leave with a job - a job that requires them to suppress all the individuality and bright personalities we've seen from them; they're only there to serve as living props to a star we don't even see. It may be enough for them but it's not enough for us and that's the entire point - every single person in a chorus line (both in the world of the show and in real life) is special and a dynamic individual who consistently sacrifices that for the chance to do what they love.
@MrCrowebobby
@MrCrowebobby 4 жыл бұрын
@@overlydramaticpanda All true, but don't forget I wrote - Before you get that first job . . . Of course you have the background bigger dream of stardom, but "God, I'd even play the maid . . ." is there before you get the first job. The pros and the newbies are different animals with different stories at this audition, I think. Great show in any case. Don Percassi and I took the same beginner tap class in 1953 at Jack Stanly's in New York; he went on to work on Broadway, I in Paris, Rome, and one show in Vegas. He was always a better dancer but we did basically the same thing. Still, I wish I could say I'd been in a Broadway Show . . . even in the chorus line.

@@MrCrowebobby Oh, don't get me wrong. As a performer myself I constantly dream of being on Broadway one day (likely to remain just a dream unfortunately), and besides that I know I get stir-crazy whenever I'm not in a show for a significant period of time. And I absolutely agree with the stance the characters (and the show as a whole) take on the whole situation: it's worth putting up with the all the crap of this kind of career to be able to even get a shot at doing what you love. I just can't separate it from the knowledge that the ending is intended to be seen as being incredibly bittersweet at best. It's awesome that you knew Don Percassi! I admit I've only seen a very very shoddy quality video of the original cast of the show but 'Sing!' and the accompanying scene was definitely a highlight. Though personally I'd say dancing in Vegas, Rome and Paris is certainly nothing to be sniffed at either, even if you never made it to Broadway. It really is often just the luck of the draw... Still, my sincere congratulations on what sounds like a good career!

Pygmy Puff Because it wasn’t a patch on the stage version and in a bizarre decision by director Richard Attenborough he ditched most of Michael Bennett’s fabulous choreography. Okay, this is a book, so bail now if you're not interested. If only there was a phrase better than "absolutely amazing". I'm sure someone can outdo it, but maybe amazeballs? What fascinated me most about this is the sheer athleticism and talent of everyone involved in this production. Before I get to the performers though, I want to give a huge shout out to the production people. The costuming could be more perfect, and while scandalous back in the 80's, the ladies outfits are just nominal these days. But it is incredibly tasteful and they look just gorgeous. Another incredible part of this was the camera actions and locations. Keeping in mind this is from the 80's, they absolutely used the *bleep* out of the available technology. And the boom fade at the end was magical; better than a good drone can do (at least, right now). On the production quality alone, I would have guessed this was more late 90's early aughts. The synchronicity of the performers with the cameras was perfect, and even if they did multiple takes (I seriously doubt it), everyone working both in front of and behind the camera got their moments in flawlessly. Accolades for the performers need to be combined with the same for the casting director. I have been in musicals, before; Fiddler on the Roof and Brigadoon. Admittedly, they were high school musicals, but I was in choir, as well, so the singing part came naturally. What isn't so natural is running around on a stage dancing, and singing at the same time. I was also a swimmer, so I quickly got used to the rhythm of it, and didn't suffer as much after-performance gasping as some of my fellow thespians. What we did, athletically, in comparison to this performance is negligible. So, I understand the kind of shape you need to be in to dance like this AND sing. But wait, there's more! They can all not only kick their own noses, but a good number of them are hat jugglers as well! Here's where the kudos to the casting director and staff come in. It's difficult enough to recruit one performer who can do all those things. Even the dancers added at the end were kicking their noses and tossing their hats about like pros. Getting that much specific talent together had to be a monumental effort, and I applaud whatever geniuses were behind snagging them up! Oh, and you performers! Bravo, bravo!! No live performance is 100% flawless, but you all sure seemed to make it look that way. I still can't think of anything better than "amazeballs"! One of the things I really love about performances like this is the dancers actually have expressions that fit the scene. Everyone here knows exactly how to make love to the camera with their expressions, and it just tickles me to see that. So many performers these days kind of put on obvious plastic faces (at least, imho), and there is no sign of that here. I want to include makeup and all the artistry that goes into making a production like this. It's amazing how everyone blends together so well, which is a difficult task. I know you're the "wind beneath the wings" folks, and the quality of your workmanship is obvious. In short, I was pretty dumbstruck by how awesome this performance was, on many levels. I wish I could thank every one of those performers personally. Yeah, that amazing!

I've seen this movie more times than I can count and saw it in the theater in Germany shortly after it was first released. I still love it and know all of the songs. I was a bit disappointed when I saw an off-broadway show of the musical. I expected this same finale -- it didn't happen. But still it was ONE SINGULAR SENSATION!!!

One of the greatest dance scenes ever filmed. Fun fact - the costume designer for this was the great Faye Poliakin who also did the costumes for Michael Jackson's "Beat It" and Paul McCartney and MJ's "Say, Say, Say" ... Incredible.

ironic the song is called One, referencing individuality, but they all meld together back into obscurity at the end with all of them looking the same

That was the original intent of the show. It's not really a happy ending, though it is flashy. They're backing the star, not individuals themselves, kicking forever, into black for all eternity.

I find that I rather like the way in which they started with the eight dancers who got the job...then added the dancers who had been on the line...then eventually added the dancers who attended the audition but didn't make the initial cut.

Omg, I just realised that at 02:11 it's not a mirror but actors made to look the same and dressed the same. From there every row is people made to look like the main characters (hair, costume, typecast), just another layer to the commentary that they have no individuality and are as "one".

Sigh! Give her your attention Do I really have to mention she's the She’s the She’s the one
