It baffles the mind how so many different elements could come together. I remember how people would say, “I’m not going to see this because I don’t like (insert name of actor)” or some other nitpicky aspect, when in reality this is a work that’s so much greater. I'm especially a fan of the annoyance of Galinda turning on the light late at night, or the fighting over a seat (with Galinda having support from other classmates), the way they use the medium to spread the song over a period of time really lets us see a daily life of bickering and mutual hatred, and it's so much fun how it manages to have just the right amount of camp to be joyful while still looking great

this is one of the only musical adaptations that's made sense to me, because of how grandiose the visuals could potentially be (due to the setting) but were previously unable to fully-explore to the creatives' full potential due to the technical limitations brought forth by the medium; unlike an adaptation like the mean girls one, wherein it being adapted did little to add to the show beyond just introducing renee rapp to a larger audience. i'm so glad to see that the filmmakers really embraced this, and went all out with the visuals - from the scenery, to the choreography, to the costuming. it's all so gloriously-camp and over-the-top

ok so I just noticed in 1:24, while all the students are bashing elphaba, galinda says "that's too much" or something like that. if that's the case it's a nice touch but I might be going crazy lol edit: after seeing the movie dubbed in another language (portuguese) I can confirm that at least in THAT VERSION she says "no, that's too much". they might have changed it from other versions but it's much clearer there, so I thought I'd share it since some people are hearing different things (not to say that they're wrong, since, like I said before, the lines might have changed from the original language on the adaptations for better flow or smth)

I CANNOT GET OVER THE GENIUS SOUND DESIGN. Little things like at 1:50 where they have that one chorus member a little louder than everyone else puts your ass RIGHT IN THE SCENE. You have such a strong sense of presence throughout the entire thing. Audio design 11/10, absolutely breathtaking. Their foley artists went absolutely ballistic.
@sbc57129 күн бұрын
Fun fact: that voice is Alyssa Fox, the broadway Elphaba for the 20th Anniversary cast! (She shared that on her instagram 😻) she was invited to do vocals for the movie Soundtrack ❤❤❤
@luna73229 күн бұрын
I was noticing that too! It's really cool because it's easy to think a voice coming through more than others in the chorus would be a negative but it's still so balanced with the other noises that it doesn't take you out of the song at all, it really brings you further in imo. Maybe it's because I saw it in the theaters and it reminds me of hearing one chorus member a bit more clearly than the others but it really does make me feel so much more engaged in the scene, almost like being there, it (paired with other audio details) just makes the entire thing feel so alive
@meghanmcdowell883123 күн бұрын
so true!! or the way that when the extras are featured in frame they are louder than ari and cynthia but only on breaks between their vocals and it doesn't overpower. the sync timing is impeccable. plus you can hear an echo when they walk into the cafeteria, versus them singing outside it's more clear. not to mention all the small foley additions like you said. it's all the incredible little details that seem obvious but they make the scene that much more immersive and complete!
@brianives436919 күн бұрын
@@sbc571Thank you for mentioning this. I saw that she mentioned it on Insta, and I thought I was going crazy because no one else has been talking about it! But that’s so obviously her voice. The amount of love for the stage version that’s baked into every detail of this movie is incredible.

Can we talk about these Shiz students please, because the ensemble did a PHENOMENAL job and I love that the movie gave them a chance to shine by letting Elphie and Glinda sit there and sing while all the students rocked out around them. They had so much conviction, they had me hooked! I keep re-watching the video to catch more fun stuff that they did. So many little moments in there and they look like they're having the best time.
@EMPALMSURECON-ew2jv27 күн бұрын
At 2:48 Glinda does this little gut punch motion looking up at Elphaba and Morrible - to me that's the entire crux of the song. Glinda might be winning with her fellow students, but elphaba is winning where it counts by becoming a sorceress. It's such a gut punch it knocks Glinda out of singing and back to reality. It rattles her and she goes from being uncomfortable with elphaba to actually intimidated by her. Further driving glindas need to bully her roommate. That along with how the shot is framed is excellent. Elphaba is in the top left corner of the screen while Glinda is beneath her and to the bottom right. Their contrasting postions and the shot says everything we need to know without saying a word.
@kelownatechkid26 күн бұрын
Wow, thanks for pointing out that detail!
@violetbui14115 күн бұрын
Not only that, but all of their "battles" throughout the song end up with elphaba in a better position than glinda, or equal. Their sparring - elphaba overpowers glinda In the cafeteria - elphaba looks smug while glinda looks uncomfortable In the classroom - both get seats equally at the front of the class And technically their room - Elphaba gets a comfy spot all to herself, with Glinda having to make room for her (and also the jump scare at the end i guess)

The choreography is pure perfection especially the last part. It really builds up to the song that gave me goosebumps. My gosh. Such a masterpiece

John Chu really knows how to deliver on the spectacle we want out of a musical. love this.

I was in musical heaven when he was announced to do this! Even before In The Heights. So far he’s slayed two musicals from my teen years

Okay so obviously both Cynthia & Ariana SLAY beyond belief, but can we also take a second to appreciate the chorus? They harmonized so well, absolutely annihilated the choreography, were so expressive and just played a huge part in bringing the scene to life. Never underestimate the importance of background characters or extras, their roles onstage and in movies add more than I think we acknowledge. 💖

Not really, West Side Story (both 1961 and 2021) versions), Hairspray, In The Heights, Tick Tick Boom, Chicago, while they cut and trimmed down some storyline decisions, they still managed to stay true to the spirit of the original

You should give the 2010 True Grit a watch. All the dialogue is lifted directly from the book.

I think theres something comforting about this relationship for Elphaba, because shes not feared for her powers or skin color. Shes being loathed for who she is, like a normal person. Glinda isnt treating her differently, but is utilizing everyone else's distaste of her difference to turn them against her. Its so meaningful that Elphaba is a black woman. White people utilizing their privilege to demonize black people who they know are innocent, is such a common story. I love this movie so much.

cynthia and ariana are so perfect in these roles, like both of them embody the characters so so well. the choreography is so good too! after so many awkward musical adaptations the past few years i'm overjoyed to see one that seems like they actually cared
