And that is one of the reasons I don't like the Muppets Christmas Carol. I love the Muppets, but there is so much that gets passed over in that version because they have to stay child friendly. I hate how everyone has seen Barbie, or Muppets, or Jim Carrey's version, but they'll never actually see the classic, and thus they'll always have a skewed idea of what the book is, and it won't even be faintly real to them. I grew up on one of the classics that was almost constantly mentioned here, and I can tell you, it was everything it needed to be: heart felt, heart breaking, terrifying, horrifying, loving, cold, and filled with energy and humor, that can't be replicated now days. If you like the newer versions, then fine.... I'm not blaming you, the classics might be hard to find, but I get faintly sick whenever I think of the newer movies, because in my mind, they can't measure up. They just can't. No Scrooge will ever be better than Alistair Sim, no Ghost of Christmas future will ever be better than in 1951, no Jacob Marley will ever be better than Michael Hordern, no nephew will ever be better than Brian Worth. The cast in that movie did a phenomenal job, and they didn't twist anything in a convenient way to match their show. Fozziwig indeed!

I like that the Muppet version had Gonzo and Rizzo disappear once the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come arrived. It shows a respect for the darker tone of those scenes by handing the spotlight fully over to Scrooge for the final arc of his growth as a person.

There actually is a good reason why the Cratchits are so joyful to the point of being unrealistic. In the time the book was written, there was a huge gap between Haves and Have-Nots to the point where most people who didn't spend much time with the poor (which was a vast majority) believed that the poor were poor because of their ineptitude and their sorry state was all their fault. When revisionist writers like Dickens wrote them, this belief was so prevalent that they had to make their sympathetic poor characters so pure and wonderful to the point of being unrealistic in order to garner any sympathy from the upper classes. It's very fake and putting it on thick nowadays, but then it was the only way for Dickens to make poor people sympathetic to all walked of life in his day.

@@katherinemorelle7115 It's not cultural it's psychological. One of our psychological hick ups is we tend to assume that people get what they deserve and deserve what they get. It's called the Just World Fallacy. This is compounded with the Fundamental attribution error, which tendency to assume that one's actions are a product not of their circumstance but of their character. For example if you see someone cut you off in tragic you're more likely to assume that they're simply a jackass and not that there's an emergency and they have to get where they're going quickly.

Muppets did a lovely job. However, the musical Scrooge in 1970 with Albert Finney as Scrooge was absolutely wonderful. The accuracy to the book, the characters, and everything wasn't hampered but merely embellished by the occasional musical number. One of the best scenes is when Scrooge sees a parade going through town and they're all singing "Thank you very much...it's the nicest thing that anyone's ever done for me" and he thinks they're honoring him. It's actually his funeral procession, and the lead in the song is tearing up Scrooge's old ledger. It's such a stark contrast to the other adaptations that just jump straight to the graveyard that when he finally sees the Ghost pointing to the grave, it scares him even more. And they also nicely incorporate the hell scene that most adaptations leave out. I highly recommend you revisit this one day, Dom.

I absolutely LOVE the 2009 Jim Carrie adaptation. I see how the slapstick and falling and faster scenes may draw someone out of the movie, but I'm a bit of an animation nerd (read: a HUGE animation nerd) so I honestly saw that as the animators fucking around and being creative simply because they could and respect them for it. And the excellent Dickens dialogue and atmosphere always drew me back into the more serious and heartfelt moments of the story

Patrick Stewart's version is well enhanced by his one-person stage adaption. I truly believe he has had a life-long love of this story and has picked it apart from every level so I'm glad his version has won a few of the awards. I may come across as a child of my times when I say his version and Muppets are my favourite versions!

Yay! The Muppet Christmas Carol is also my favorite version of the Charles Dickens story, so I'm pleased you chose it for Best Adaptation! I'm a big Muppets fan as well, and it might be nostalgia talking, but it really is the movie that seems to perfectly capture the Christmas spirit. It's genuinely a feel-good movie with nary a drop of cynicism in it, and I like it all the more for that approach! The only thing that disappoints me about Muppet Christmas Carol is Katzenberg's meddling that got one of the songs removed from the movie. The song is 'When Love is Gone' (the reprise at the end of the movie, that was left in, is 'When Love is Found'), which Belle sings to Young Ebeneezer and is her breaking up with him because she feels he fell out of love with her (we see that he's more interested in work and keeps pushing off their wedding), and while she still loves him, she feels she'll never be happy if she remains with him. It's a rather sad song, and it adds to the movie- making it more obvious why Belle leaving him really broke Scrooge. But apparently Katzenberg felt the song was "too sad", and believed that children watching the film would be bored by it, and not understand what was going on, so he had Brian Henson remove it from the movie. The only times it was in the film was during the theatrical release before the edit, and there are a few VHS copies of the movie that still have 'When Love is Gone' in tact, but all DVD reprints have the song omitted. You can find the clip of the song on KZbin, and can subsequently see why leaving the song out hurts the film, as in the edited version, the movie awkwardly transitions from Belle breaking up with Young Ebeneezer to Scrooge back in his bedroom alone and having to relive his heartbreak from that day again.

I mean I see where Katzenberg was coming from because as a kid, I really felt that that scene was out of place and dragged the movie down (I had the VHS) so I was pleased to see it omitted. However, as an adult, I now see how vital that was to the story and how jarring its omission was.

Well he wasn’t wrong. Kids lose interest when a love ballad plays, and that was certainly true for me whenever we got to that part. I was confused when I found the DVD version didn’t include it, but I can’t say I was sad it was gone.

The 3 ghosts represented aspects of there names. The ghost of Christmas past represented a culminations of different people Scrooge has met, being a moving changing mixture of what appeared to be a multitude of other people. The ghost of Christmas present represents the holiday that was currently going by. He was a jolly large man who acted like If Christmas was himself a person. The ghost of Christmas future is the representation of what is in everyone’s future, death.

+Valter There's a slight problem with Hitchhiker, there isn't a consistent version. While the books and Movie are the most well known, there is also the Radio version, which started it all and ended after the film was released (thank Disney and a long dose of "hiatus"), an adventure game that was originally text only (weird story there), the TV version, a stage play, and two different takes on the audiobooks of the novels (Really). Each version sculpts the story in different lighting. the coreof the story might seem like it should be about two hours, but really is more depth to it than it seems in some areas and shallower in others.

It could be compared and contrasted to either the books or the scripts to the radio show. +Valter there was also a tv show, however Douglas Adams was heavily involved in all of the adaptations, he wrote the books, the radio plays, the tv series, and the movie. so i wouldn't so much classify them as adaptations as i would say they were merely alternate expansions of the book universe. kinda like the DC multiverse.

+Mike Sherry the fact that the Author went delibratley out of his way to make every adaptation differnt could be a real treat for this series:D it can be a difinitive example of how one goes abaout translating a story from one medium to another and if the Dom is willing to expand his scope shows off what kind of changes and additions and whatnot can be doen in each medium for maximum effect, like i dunno for radio dramas you write more dialogue heavy and use sound FX like punchlines for scenes,comicbooks may be more action oriented or allow for more worldbuilding as you instruct the artist what to draw ect. and at the end we can have a DomOscars for the franchise itself:D which will highlight the very principle Dom kept going with his series: tell the author's story by whatever means possible. like he just said in this very domoscars the best adaptation holds the spirit of the story not the mere cosmetic surface trappings:) on a tangent i am curious if Dom has read Robert McKee's Story, cuz his chapter on adaptation is basiclaly what dom tlaks about by cutting to the heart and theme of the work in question and working from there.

I do find myself loving Christmas more now than I did as a kid. When I was a kid my mother would always be angry in Christmas, whether it be because of the stress to prepare everything, that me and my little sister hadn't bothered cleaning up our rooms, that our grandfather forgot to buy a gift to our older sister (My older sister is my half sister and my grandfather isn't her grandfather), that our older sister hadn't come home in Christmas, that we were all laughing when we found a big potato in our mashed potatoes and she had made it etc. As a kid I always dreaded Christmas and looked forward for it to be over so I could get to play with my new toys. But now that I am an adult I don't have to put up with my family's shit anymore. If they can't even be nice on Christmas then I won't celebrate Christmas with them anymore and will spend a lot less time with them. Christmas is the one time of the year most of my family are peaceful nowadays, we have ditched all the stressful Christmas traditions and now it's all about spending time with each other and try to get along.

Another great video! Just want to add that I think The Muppet Christmas Carol also managed to get that conversational 'told to you' feel very nicely by having 'Dickens' address the audience and tell the story in a way that didn't feel shoehorned in. I'd also like to mention that there's a great version of A Christmas Carol called 'Scrooge' from 1970 that also happens to be a musical. Not the most accurate adaptation, but definitely worth a watch (and notable in that the same actor who played Scrooge as an old man also played him as a young one in the past). It was nominated for several prestigious awards including several Oscars and has been the traditional watch for my family for at least 15 years. If you like musicals at all then I'd highly recommend it :)

1984 and Muppets are my two favorite Christmas Carols. So excellent. I also recommend the 1971 Christmas Carol. While it may not be a fantastic adaptation it really does get a lot of things right and I think it has the most book accurate ghost of Christmas past I have ever seen. Plus, Alistair Sim is in it!

The ‘51 with Sim is the version I’ve watched with my parents every Christmas Eve for over 20 years. Patrick Stewart’s version gets a watch every few years as well.

The 2009 version is, oddly enough, my favorite adaptation (though I do have a nostalgic love for the old Disney Mickey's Christmas Carol, as that was how I was introduced to the story in the first place). Though it did have a few spots of goofy that didn't quite chime with the rest of the movie, that scene with Tim dying brings tears to me every time...the facial acting was perfect for Carrey's contorting expressions and the emotion was delivered nicely. I also liked the reimagining of the Ghost of Christmas Future as a shade (though the chase scene can fuck right off).

Something I love about Mickey's Christmas Carol is how they managed to do something blasphemous really well. Making the Chost of Christmas-Yet-To-Come talk should be a serious no-no, but they hold off until the last possible moment, and give him one of the most damningly hardest lines in the entire special. "Why, your's, Ebenezer. The richest man in the cemetery!"

The Cratchets went bananas over Christmas because there was such little joy in their lives that to 'feast' (i.e. having a goose and pudding over say, a hunk of bread soaked in milk for dinner) meant euphoric heights of gratitude. Glad to see that this baffled you, in a way. It means you've never missed a meal or been undernourished. As it should be.

I think the Muppets should've scored higher on the book quotes front, the fact that they had Gonzo narrating as Charles Dickens meant that a good amount of the original prose, if not the dialogue specifically, made it into the film in a way it didn't in the traditional film versions

I must admit 1984 and Mickey are first in my heart purely because those are the ones I grew up watching. An interesting note on the Muppets one, though: I saw a dress historian talk about the costumes and she said they did a really nice job, with lots of details and extra effort that would have been easy to leave out.

First things first- 1) I love Christmas. I've had some shitty ones (Grama died 2 days before, etc.), but it's still my absolute favorite holiday. Food, music, family, movies, traditions. You get the picture. 2) I love A Christmas Carol. I have since I was a kid (Yay, Micky!). This was reinforced when I had to read the book in the 7th grade. The story usually makes me emotional, and even watching this today (in 100°F/37.777°C AUGUST) I teared up... Even though I enjoy all the movies, plays, & specials (I watch as many versions as I can each year), I tend to pick them apart for the same reasons you do. I cannot pick an overall favorite film because none have lived up to the standard Dickens set so long ago (though if I had to it'd probably be 51, George C Scott or Muppets). (Stewart is my favorite Scrooge, even with his lacking portrayal of true fear, partly because I've had a crush on him since the early TNG days, and partly because of his passion for this work of Dickens. And then there's the accent, which Scott was lacking.) 3) My biggest pet peeve you didn't even mention. The whole reason Ebenezer's father didn't like him was because Engineer's mother died giving birth to him, meaning his sister is OLDER than he is. She is usually portrayed as younger & this really irritates me. 4) I just found your channel today (THANK YOU, PETRA!) and I love the Lost In Adaptation videos I've seen so far.

The 1984 version was our family’s Christmas tradition. I recorded it off the air the first year it aired. We used that copy for a few years, but Dad got tired of fast-forwarding through the commercials, so he had me re-record it, editing out the ads. Eventually we bought the commercial VHS and later the DVD and finally the Blu-ray. Sadly, since my parents passed away, it’s not as big a part of Christmas as it used to be.

One thing I liked about the Muppet Christmas carol is that by having gonzo as Dickins we get a great deal of dialogue that would be hard to work in otherwise stuff that the unnamed narrator would say such as describing scrooge as a "tight fisted hand to the grindstone" "a covetous old sinner" and the reminder that the marleys were "dead and decaying in their graves that one thing you must remember or nothing that follows will seem wondrous"

While I know it would never fit The Dom's definition of a good adaptation due to all the changes made, I've always like the 1970 musical, Scrooge. In that, a guy who owed Scrooge money literally dances on his coffin as it's being taken for burial.

I like the muppets version as well (it’s tradition to watch it with my family every Christmas) but the reason I was heartbroken about tiny Tim’s death was the fact that Kermit and Miss Piggy was sad and I loved them both dearly so seeing them heartbroken over losing their child was really sad (in my defense I didn’t watch a lot of muppets media so didn’t know about Robin) it was the same with the Disney version (the one with Disney characters playing the characters of the story) seeing Mickey upset about losing his son was sad for me because I loved him so much.

Funnily enough it turns out that when it comes to the costumes with regard to the time period the muppets also did a fantastic job. Even for the muppets and a lot of the extras the exact era and it’s fashion is pretty much on point

Me and my family have watched the 1999 version every Christmas Eve since it came out, I’m so happy you gave it some recognition here although it absolutely should have won every single award it is the ultimate version

I think what's amazing how about the Muppet Christmas Carol has aged well. So many movies don't but the Muppet Carol has managed to age well and also still hold up. It's also a perfect introduction to a classic story for kids.

I love this story and out of all of the film versions, I love the Muppets one. I try to watch it every year during the Xmas season and I never tire of it. The songs are good and it really gets me into the Christmas spirit. :)

The animated version from the early 2000's was pretty good, I seem to recall. Too bad nobody else seems aware it exists lol. It was on Netflix a few years ago, when Netflix had like, 20 versions of the story available. I watched all of them. Every. Single. One. It was awesome.

Muppets is my families christmas tradition and this year I will be able to show it my own baby. I also used it as the catalist for telling my dad he was being promoted to grandad. It certainly deserved the win

Just another little thing about the Cratchit family. The big deal about Christmas, while over the top, makes sense when you consider that this really was the one time of year where everyone was home. That's why Martha being home from her job makes sense. Same with Bob being home, and the excitement about the goose and the pudding makes sense. These would have been a really big deal, and a big indulgence compared to the regular fair eaten.

While I don't disagree with any of the nominations and awards, I feel a bit saddened that the 1971 animated short never made it onto the list. Alastair Sim reprises his role as Scrooge, the portrayal of the ghosts (esp Christmas Past) were amazing, and the overall mood gave me goosebumps.

Another mark in favor of the Muppet's Christmas Carol is that, in spite of Tim's death and how sad and devastating it is for the family, and for Bob and his wife in particular, Kermit's performance as Bob Cratchit is very book accurate in that it shows that the Cratchit family is still going to be ok. They genuinely mourn Tim, they will miss him, are all changed by his death, and will always remember him, but Bob and his wife show a clear effort trying to hold things together for each other and for their other children. They then discuss the prospects of the other children and how they will go on and go to visit Tim's grave in the better weather. They mourn Tiny Tim, but no one in the family is planning on following him into his grave and neither their attitude or the book suggest that they should.
