“Guinea” A derogatory term for "an Italian" (1896) it is from Guinea Negro (1740s) "black person, person of mixed ancestry;" applied to Italians probably because of their dark complexions relative to northern Europeans, and after 1911 it was occasionally applied to Hispanics and Pacific Islanders as well. New Guinea was so named 1546 by Spanish explorer Inigo Ortiz de Retes in reference to the natives' dark skin and tightly curled hair. The Guinea hen (1570s) is a domestic fowl imported from there. Related: Guinean.

they implied that it was infested with Mafia. Which is why the owner was Woltz. But it was really Columbia pictures. The Johnny Fontaine character, who was desperate to get into a Harry Woltz film, was based on Frank Sinatra, and mirrors his attempts to get a role in the film, “From Here to Eternity.” Sinatra did of course eventually get the part, but his current wife, Ava Gardner likely had something to do with that, but there are stories.

I have watched this movie several times including several reactions. I learn a little bit more every time. This whole movie is about one thing: Barzini wants to be the most powerful Don in the 5 families. Currently it is Vito so Vito needs to die. Barzini sends Sollozzo to offer the drug deal to Vito knowing Vito would refuse. This gives him the excuse he needs to kill Vito. Luca was not killed because he was spying for Vito, Luca was killed before the attempt on Vito because as Tom put it “ not even Sonny will be able to stop Luca. After the meeting of the heads of the five families Vito noticed that Barzini was carrying too much of the conversation to be merely an arbitrary of the dispute. Vito realized that the whole thing was a power play by Barzini all along. When Vito says “I will not be the one to break the peace we made here today” he could have added Barzini will. So now he has to plan for the day Barzini breaks the peace. When Micheal takes over the family and he tells Tom he is no longer consigliere this is when he and Vito start planning the revenge on Barzini and their other enemies. Vito tells Tom “there are things that you cannot be a part of.” This is for 2 reasons: one is that they need him to be the clean lawyer beyond reproach representing the family in Las Vegas while they are making their move. The second is that the research and planning for the revenge has to stay between Vito and Micheal for security reasons. Michael would not have been able to plan the simultaneous attacks between the funeral and the Baptism. The plans had to have been done while Vito was still alive. When Vito keeps telling Michael “whoever brings you the meeting with Barzini he’s the traitor” that is both a warning and a trigger. When Barzini arranges the meeting and the ambush, he will have broken the truce and Vito’s promise is no longer valid. So he is telling Michael when the traitor comes to you with the meeting that is your trigger to act.

Okay. There are details in the book that they could not put into the movie, or it would have been 8 hours long. Luca Brasi is a very bad, very violent man. Supposedly Vito Corleone is the only man Luca fears, and Luca is the only man Vito fears. Pay attention to the decorations on Michael's uniform. They are important later. He has the Navy Cross, given for bravery in combat. Something that you probably are unaware of is how removed from mainstream American life most Italian people were until after World War Two. They were discriminated against and looked down upon and treated as not quite American enough. I guarantee that Kay's family was not happy about her dating Michael. The book alludes to this. The bridesmaid who Sonny was "doing" is Lucy Mancini. If you watch Part Three, you'll see her again. In the book Woltz (studio head) is even worse than in the film. He's a real piece of garbage on two legs. The guys laugh at Michael when he describes his plan for Sollazzo and McClusky. They forgot about Michael's Navy Cross - he had been in combat and he had definitely killed men in the war. When Luca Brasi goes to speak with Sollazzo and the Tattaglias did you notice that he didn't shake Sollazzo's hand? That's how they knew he wasn't serious. Of course they took the cannoli. Clemenza's wife specifically asked for them. The man in the back seat who shot Paulie is Rocco Lampone. If you watch Part Two you'll see him again. In Sicily, the man who gets out of the car to talk to Michael and who walks with a limp is Tomasso, a friend of Vito's. If you watch Part Two, you'll see him again. Sicily had a lot of people move in through the years, Italian, Greek, North Africa, French, Jewish, so Appollonia being more Greek than Italian isn't a big surprise. I'm not sure where you got two weeks for Michael being is Sicily. He was there for over a year. [You need to pay closer attention.] The irony of the one don talking about keeping drugs restricted to "the colored" is that for a good part of the 20th Century Italians were considered to be "colored" by a lot of Americans. During the baptism/multiple murder scene, the man in the police uniform is an ex-cop, Al Neri. If you watch Parts Two and Three you'll see him again. The man who trapped Don Cuneo in the revolving door and killed him is Willi Cicci; if you watch Part Two you will see him again. The utter blasphemy of being a godfather and reciting the baptismal promises while orchestrating so many murders is striking. When Clemenza says, "Hello, Carlo," you know it's over. In the book you will find out that Clemenza is Sonny's godfather, so he gets to take out Carlo. At the end, talking to Kay, Michael skated on a technicality. He didn't physically kill Carlo but no honest person would say that he was innocent. Now watch parts Two and Three. Throughout the series try to contrast Vito and Michael.

Racial issues are irrelevant in this mafia crime drama written by Mario Puzo, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, starring Marlon Brando and Al Pacino. It has nothing to do with race issues in 2024. An Italian mob connected family in the USA in the 1940s. The drama is king. Not 2024 racial issues concerning blacks or whites. Get a grip and try to stay on the movie's topic. Otherwise you just come off as bored and not engaged in what's happening in the movie

Information in the book suggested that Michael was hiding in Sicily for almost 2 years, and that his wife was pregnant when she was killed. A lot of that was cut out between writing the screenplay and editing the finished film.

I liked the movie reaction and have subscribed. For most of your sidebar discussions you paused the video, but there were a few times that you talked over some dialogue that provided plot points. I think you’ll adjust to that and I look forward to more reactions. But, you have to remember that, especially with the big popular movies a lot of people will be watching your reactions who are die hard fans and will be very very picky. Good luck!

Sonny actually planned the killing of the heads (dons) of five families years earlier Sonny thought up the idea Vito plotted it out & designed it & Michael just carried it out after his pop's death!!! It wasn't Mikes plan or idea for the Baptism Of Fire , it was his fathers plan & Santino's original idea that Vito used after remembering Sonny talk about it decades earlier during the last all out war they had before Michael even joined the family 💯 Its in the novel & theres talks about it in the movie too if u pay attention enough to all the dialogue 💯💯💯💯💯
