I'm a "Bronx Sicilian" (3rd Generation) and I know a lot of the locations used in the film shoot. My grandfather came from a town not far from Corleone in Sicily---that too still looks much the same. It's got a real quality of authenticity. About Michael "not being good with a gun"--he was a Captain in the Marines, from fighting in the Pacific--and highly decorated (Navy Cross) from close combat and proven leadership. He's not "Joe College" anymore. But they don't realize that.

A lovely movie up the alley of someone as thoughtful as you is “Babette’s Feast.” It’s beautifully shot, and not likely a movie anyone will tell you about. (Commenters, please don’t spoil this film with any details.) The less you know about it, the better. It’s in color, but, like movies in black and white, it has other attributes that will cause some people to pass it by. Don’t make that mistake. It’s a rewarding visual and sensual experience, a rare treat. A feast. “Babette’s Feast” is based on a 20 pp. short story.

I'm 71 years old and first saw all 3 Godfather films in the theater when each was released. And to this very day, the first two remain my #1 and #2 favorite movies of all time by a good margin. Part 2 is at least as great as the first. Many feel it's even better!! Part 3 is good but has a very different vibe and falls short compared to 1 and 2. But man, are you gonna love Part 2!!!

You’ve just started one of the remarkable journeys in cinema. It’s funny how most reactors are afraid of the 3 hour runtimes of these movies but they end up wanting more when they end. These first two films are 1A and 1B in my top five. I believe it was Brando who came up with the way his character should talk.

The Godfather is my favorite of the trilogy, but many believe the sequel GF II to be even better. Godfather II is a masterpiece as well and well worth the watch, as for number 3, well it doesn't live up to the standard of the first two and if you skip it you won't be missing much.

For Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando), Francis Ford Coppola put a jaw prosthesis in his mouth and a gauze, to give him that particular face. Brando was relatively young in this film, and Coppola pretended to age him and also look more threatening.

I don’t remember how often these were on cable tv back in the day. Like USA, TNT, TBS maybe. But they were such long movies that you usually came across it in the middle. I think I finally had to check out the VHS tapes from blockbuster to finally watch from beginning to end.

Back in the time this movie came out what was happening was movies came out slowly one at a time to theaters and the public would gossip about the latest “it” movies. The Godfather was the ultimate “it” movie. There was a feeling of awe of greatness, and a palpable buzz about it.

Micheal was a combat veteran from WWII so he was very good with a gun.

That sequence during the baptism not only had a purpose to eliminate all of Michael's rivals, but also to ensure the loyalty of those men performing the hits. Most of those men (especially the one dressed as a cop that in the end of the film closes the door to Kay) later become part of Michael's inner circle and the most trusted men in the organization. They're more prominent in the book than in the movies

The fact that Tessio wasn't killed like the other Capos of the Five Families (being shot with no warning) is somehow a recognition from Michael that he was a close ally of his father right from the beginning (as you will see in the prequel sequence of The Godfather Part II). Tessio's betrayal was motivated by the fact that he disagreed with the decisions Michael took once he became the Capo of the Corleone Family.

Loved this reaction. Godfather 1 is my favorite movie (ok, it changes places with Godfather 2 occasionally......depends what day of the week it is). There have been many documentaries and books written about the making of THIS movie but since you were so interested in Marlon Brando's "look," Coppola had to disguise the actor, because Brando became so difficult to work with in Hollywood during the 1960s that most studios, producers refused to hire him. Once Coppola showed the rushes to the studio, they agreed to give him the part........that's just one of the countless bits of trivia that goes along with this masterpiece. Tremendous commentary. The fact that you've worked and know what it takes to make a movie, and what great acting looks like, it really adds to the reaction. I suddenly want you to watch every great classic, from the silent era right to the present! Citizen Kane! Singin' In the Rain! Paper Moon and American Graffiti! Bonnie And Clyde and Sophie's Choice! Boogie Nights and The Royal Tenenbaums! You've got a great eye and a great mind! Now if you'll excuse me I want to see what other reactions you've done!!! PS: After you do "Godfather Part 2" - which is 1974 - watch "Dog Day Afternoon" which is 1975, Al Pacino and John Cazale (Fredo), totally different characters, incredible true crime film. OR do "The Conversation" also from 1974, also directed by Coppola....both movies nominated for best picture! Coppola made two masterpieces in the same year! Coppola also did "Apocalypse Now" in 1979, another classic.

The jaw decision was actually his own. Brando came up with it himself on set. They hadn't thought of it. Instead they went with it because it worked so well.

The line at 12:46 is approximately "I understand that you're not entirely satisfied with the Corleone family." I assume they're speaking Sicilian, so perhaps the accent was throwing you off. Me, i know little Italian but i know Spanish and French, so it makes it easier to hear things in Italian and Portuguese.

Sonnie is absolutely wrong about how Mike killed people as an 'army boy;' Michael was in the Marine corps, which means that he almost certainly served in the Pacific theater against the Japanese, a fanatical enemy ready - even eager - to give their live in combat. The fighting was short-range, up-close, desperate and brutal. Mike was harder than any mug on the Corleone payroll. Michael loved Kay but he was IN love with Apollonia. When he lost her, he married Kay because he believed a man in his position needed to have a wife and family. For Kay's part, she was IN love with Michael. She willfully believed his lies because if she questioned him she would have to face how loving a ruthless gangster reflected on HER.

It's Sonny's fault for showing interest during the meeting with Solozzo. Everyone knew it but him. Once he showed some interest it emboldened Solozzo to try and take Vito out.

Marlon Brando put cotton inside his mouth, it was his choice I believe. Jonny Fontaine is Frank Sinatra. When Sinatra was young, he signed a lifelong deal with band leader Tommy Dorsey that he later wanted to get out of. Dorsey refused until someone pointed a gun at his head. By the mid 50s Sinatra’s career had tanked and he ended up getting a small but important role in “From Here to Eternity” and and also won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. This reignited his singing career and started his acting career. Unlike Fontaine, there were no horses heads in Sinatra’s story, or even a suggestion of mob involvement to landing that role.

I read that "Sonny" improvised throwing that stick at the abusive brother in law in the scene where he chased him and beat him up. If you go back and look you'll see that sucker whistle and inch past his head as he's ducking.. dude probably saw his life flash. 😆

The horsehead and blood and screams were all real. They did kill the horse for the it was going to be slaughtered earlier so they extended its life. The actor was not told about the horse head and so did scream. He almost quit the movie because of it

Film was released on the 15th of March in 72. The Ides of March. The day Caesar was killed. The last scene in the book, wouldve made a great last scene in the movie. They filmed it, but left it on the cutting room floor. Kay lighting votive candles in church, ALONE. Saying the necessary prayers for the soul of Michael Corleone.

The first two Godfather movies are in my top 2!. Rounding out my top 5 is Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption and Casablanca. I'll add an honorable mention to both Goodfellas and Field of Dreams. Actually Brando came up with putting tissue on his jaws to, look as a bulldog like the book describes Vito Corleone. He won an Oscar for his performance. 2 is better & considered best movie ever. Goodfellas describes what honor,trust & family means to Mafia.

Two good reasons for Michael to ditch Kay and marry Apollonia: 1. He didn’t know how long it would be before he could return to the US, if ever! 2. If he were to marry Kay, he could never become a”made man”, thus could not take over the family some day. When he was just a “civilian”, that wasn’t necessary. But once he killed Sollozzo and the cop, he was now part of the life. Apollonia was perfect to keep the Italian blood line. Not to mention she was a smoke show. As far as killing Carlo goes, Michael probably wouldn’t have had him killed just for hitting Connie. He was killed for baiting Sonny into going out of the family compound to beat him. It was all a set up. The hit men were waiting at the toll plaza knowing Sonny would flip out. They weren’t just hanging out there hoping he’d show up.

You mentionec Michael's bruise for a long time. The cop broke his jaw.That takes a long time to heal. Also, some good acting on Pacino's part, during his time in Sicily, he has a handkerchief and keeps wiping his mouth. Thats because he's invokuntaeily drooling becaise of the injury.

It's true that Marlon Brando put stuff in both sides of his mouth for that look of his, but it was entirely his idea. He felt the character should "look like a bulldog." He also put shoe polish in his hair to make it so black.
