Ha, ha... now coming back 2 years later. China's economy of business is in debt of over 55 trillion. And you were saying? Now, we find out China's Economy is Just A Giant Ponzi Scheme! Every last business except for tech was making money. The high-speed train, Skyscraper, Luxury apartments, 18 billion dollar bridge, Hyrodam, and banks are all over leverages. China companies are living on banks loans for years to pay off the other bank loan.

"China is a market economy, and it is a vibrant market economy, but it is not a capitalist country; here is why. There is no way a group of billionaires could control the politburo as billionaires control American policy making. So in China you have a vibrant market economy but capital does not rise above political authority, capital does not have enshrined rights. In America capital, the interest of capital and capital itself, has risen above the American nations. The political authority cannot check the power of capital and that’s why America is a Capitalist country and China is not." Eric Li That blew my mind, we think of Communism as both economic and political but democracy as political and capitalism as economic. Yet look at the US gov't, literally

The only superpower wants to be the king of the world, so he would like all other countries to be democracies, in which at least two parties fight with each other. If your party did something he doesn't like, he will support your enemy in the next election so that they will win the vote. He is the superpower, not only controls the powerful military, but also the economy and media, with money and media, he can change anything in democratic countries. However, China is the only one with one party but developing so fast, that's why human rights, Uighur problem, force labor.... a lot of demonized stories are made up by him, he is trying his best to destroy China, but I know with 1.4 billion people support China, he won't win.

The CIA's have been manipulating elections in South America for decades, a lot of people already know that. they want to keep South America poor so the U.S can easily control Latin America can take advantage. America flooded Mexico with Coca-Cola, McDonald's, and all kinds of junk food, and takes away 60% of Mexico's fresh produce like Avocados, lettuce, and spinach. American Corporations call this free trade, but in fact, they are just looting other countries for their resources. Something happened a hundred years ago when the Brits wanted Silk and tea from China but they didn't have the silver to trade, so they declare a war on the Chinese with some made-up excuses and forced China to accept opium for trade, so the west used slaves to grow opium, dumped drugs to China, in exchange for gold, silver, and other natural resources.

Democracy is a thinking society's system of governance as its primary idea is representation. The basic principle bshind democracy is the decentralisation of power. None of the third world countries that got chose democracy as their governing system were equiped to understand how it is suppose to work, let alone make it work. The same can be said about first world democracies like America or UK. Democracy leads to choas and destruction when the political discourse of the nations population is based around tribal sentiments of blue or red and ideologies rather than issues, facts and realities on the ground.

Prof. Richburg's claim that China was merely catching up to where it should've been can be contradicted by another example: India. In 1980, both countries were at the same starting line with similar size populations and similar economic conditions (impoverished). However, forty years later, India lags far, far behind China in terms of GDP PPP, in terms of nominal GDP, in terms of per capita GDP, in terms of infrastructure, in terms of poverty alleviation, and so on. The key difference between these two countries is that India is a democracy, and a very dysfunctional one at that.

For example through the work of Vandana Shiva and Sandguru? who are working with SOIL and spirituality are educating and slowly changing the culture of food, (how its grown and freeing poor people from the tyranny of companies who control food and its prices). Also improving people happiness and awakening. China does not have this at a grassroors level only centralised through the government. The gains cannot be measured in just GDP etc. Both China and India can learn from each other to help progress their situations.

The debate was clearly won by Dr. Eric Li’s strong analytics views back by undeniable facts and figures which are fluently presented with Chinese pride. On the other hand, the Prof. was simply arrogantly expressing his personal views which are highly prejudicial and superficial that could not stand with factual challenges (e.g. so biased to give all the credits to the past great of Deng Xiao Ping instead of to the effort of the Party leaderships and Xie etc.) That’s why he said the Chinese officials did not like him much there (probably rounded up in Hong Kong University now instead). After all, the Americans have no rights to challenge the Chinese political system which belongs to an independent sovereign country. China has all the rights to shape its own political system that best serves its own people. Who gives a damn on what the Americans think. If the Americans are minding their own country without exporting it’s self-claimed universal values and so-called democratic systems either through colour revolutions or by war, the world will be in peace.

Richard has it wrong on a few points. CONTAINMENT HAS BEEN AND IS PART OF US AND WESTERN POWERS FOREIGN POLICY. The change in strategy was a calculation that China could be another western market for Western goods. The idea behind the transnational investment was the exploitation of The Chinese Market! China was allowed to manufacture for The US and world markets. Billionaires made a mint in both China and In The west, including The US. The only difference was that in America only billionaires benefitted. In China, poverty alleviation helped 850 million people out of extreme poverty! The West created poverty as China created a better life for millions!! The Domino Theory that created US military bases along the borders of China, has never been dropped. The bases still are as active now as ever. The reality of containment has not stopped China from growing economically. China continues to grow when all other nations are plagued with recessions. The reason that makes China successful is that not ideology. China has a developmental model that I call a SOCIAL MERITOCRACY! IT IS A DYNAMIC THAT MAKES GREAT GOVERNANCE ITS KEY COMPONENT! The purpose of a social meritocracy is the betterment of The People's Education, health, and welfare!! The economic rights of each and every Chinese is the mandate of The Chinese government. Billionaires are permitted to make all the money they wish. But they are precluded from influencing governance. The West is lost because billionaires control politics for the benefit of billionaires; NOT THE PEOPLE!!

Who is following their model? Just curious coz I want to check em out. Would be interesting to see. Also, I think the Prof is talking about ppl freedom (think of how ppl are treated in military regime as the opposite) and I call that the ppl system, which is diff from the govt sys (social meritocracy or social democracy 4 e.g). I also think while democracy promotes this freedom, freedom itself is independent. However, the west bunches then together. The Prof didn't to be fair and I don't think he hates the Chinese govt system, he said it at the end. He just doesn't like the limited freedom. Brazil for e.g has higher freedom as the ppl system but the govt system is underperforming at least at the time of this video (don't know about now). I hope I explained it well for you. My solution for this differences is for the America to stop promoting democracy and call it freedom instead. Then the Chinese can show them how they aren't controlling their citizens and how they have some freedom/rights and maybe show them plans to increase those as they grow. Then the Chinese can also help by showing the Americans how their govt system is more social for the capitalist i.e social capitalism instead of social democracy. Hopefully, that would stop everyone from fighting. Question : do you think total citizen freedom can work with the Chinese govt system?

All nation will face challenge when they cannot deliver economic prosperity to their citizens no matter what form of government they adopt. If you want to see what happen if China grows at 2-3%, now is the best time to see since this is what is happening on the ground now. Are the Chinese rioting now? Compare this to what is happening in the US and you will see that the so called democratic country are not immune to social turmoil when the govt do not deliver. 2-3% growth is still a good growth number when the quality o f the growth is good. It will take multi-year deep recession to cause rioting in China.

@@turtlesoup8134 This year´s growth of China indeed would be 2-3, but it still would´t be a such accurate point to see the impact of the decrease of economy, cuz the whole world economies are facing a retrogress, 2-3 would even more valuable than 8-9 before. But if China can go through this mid income trap, I would say, barely no chance to see impact of decrease of economy in the way that the western world like.

@@user-ge7uc8up1t 2-3% is the same number no matter what the other country produce. No country is going to riot because of 2-3% growth. The source of the discontent is usually something more serious such as real unemployment, religious conflicts, poverty, etc. The idea of China rioting at 2% growth is concocted by the west as a way to explain the social contract that Chinese people may have with the Chinese govt as a way to legitimize CPC rule. This is to assure the western population that CPC rule will be short lived and temporary. The smart people that study geopolitic of course know that it is a lie targeted to appease western populace. The history of China shows that it will much more that slow economic growth to cause a riot and revolution. It will take extreme poverty, corruption and external forces combined to bring down China.

As a mainlander born at late 1980s, I used to trust what the Western scholars said abt our political system, but I don't believe it as time passing by, not just b/c what CCP has achieved, also involves how the lies are exposed by looking at what they have done to the poor middle east. Democracy/freedom is just a good thing(if it really could) for themselves, and is very likely to be poison to countries whose history/culture/economic are not yet ready to adopt. Besides, when considering the fact that China is taking over US world dominant place, this democracy fairy tale looks more like a Trojan horse .

This is March 2021 and with a bit of hindsight I will some comment. First, I agree with both summaries. Second, I will declare Eric as the winner on balance. I am an Asian first and a Singaporean. I get a bit wary of westerner seeing China with a western lens and relying on personal anecdotal evidence, just too much inherent bias. So much is wrong with America now and it pained me as I was a great supporter of the west in my youth but over the last 20 years and more, especially the last 7-8 years, my view has swung to the other end of the spectrum. America is in a mess, look at the lies and misinformation emanating from the politicians and main stream media. The countless wars and with false justification, the killing and of black lives and minorities, the homelessness, ignoring science and the repercussion of Covid handling, the declining wages of the vast majority of the workforce over the last 30+ years, the decaying infrastructure, ... I could go on. The American model is broken. Conversely, socialism, especially China’s model is very impressive. They have alleviated 800 millions from extreme poverty, reforestation of vast area of Gobi desert, 90+ % of approval ratings by the population, significant improvement in life expectancy ( though I will admit many countries has done that too). China has helped many countries with infrastructure development ( of course a mutual win-win) instead of dropping bombs. You can’t close your eyes to all these unless you are a China hater and wilfully choose to turn a blind eye. Yes, I am biased now towards China as I was biased and in favour of the west in my younger days. In closing, while XJP has done exceptionally well in steering China but I do agree that longer term China needs to tone down the authoritarian model. I dislike the many military generals ruling any country in whatever pretext.

Only after they realized that they are left behind, they made an U-turn to contain China. Presently they are not only trying to contain with trade wars, Quad and Fonops, war games, etc. To Prof, what are those? To help China?
