@@2KSnSLifestyle No he was talking about the Tibetans. Who when they were taken over in the late 50's were a feudal society, run by the Dali Lama and the monks. The Uighur were never taken over, they just lived with other ethnic minorities in the Xinjiang province, and they have indeed multiplied in numbers in recent times. If memory serves, from 2 million to 12 million. You may want to check that. They and other ethnic minorities were not subject to the 1 child policy, while the Han ethnic group was.

Eric has guts. He stimulates your thinking, whether you love him or hate him. One thing that could've made the audience more clear about his position on non-interference of other countries (even if there is a genocide) and let them make decisions for themselves is that China does not force business or cooperation decisions on other countries; China offers them and let them decide (or negotiate) for themselves. Whereas the west, using humanitarian reasons to interfere, often forces their "solution" on others (and resulting in disasters for the countries). The 150 years of humiliation for China started with foreign powers forcing one-sided trade deals with China. In another talk, an African high official (in trade, if I remember correctly) described that when China made a trade deal with his country, and the contract was already signed, he felt it was unfair to his country and complained to China. He was surprised to find out that the China side was quite willing to re-negotiate and in the end he was able to procure a new contract much more beneficial to his country. This method of foreign dealings does involve time and pain and learning, but ultimately it is respectful of the country you're dealing with, and helps both sides to learn and grow.

I wouldn't characterise China as successful either, they're both developing countries. India has a GDP per capita of $9000 while China has $21,000. For reference, the average European country has $45,000. I think it will take at least another 30 years for India and China to be truly developed and successful.

@Qing Tong I was stating the PPP figures. India's GDP per capita is $2000 by nominal standard and $9000 by PPP standard. Similarly, China's per capita GDP is $10,000 by nominal standards and $21,000 by PPP standards. According to the UN, China is already a developed country. But clearly the living standards in China are far below that of Western countries, and it will take at least 30 years for China to catch up; 10 years is simply not enough.

My eyes were opened, all my life the western propaganda machine had me believing lies. Walking at night in the down town of major cities in China is safe while trying that in Atlanta or Phoenix, or Miami or Los Angeles is a life threatening experience. I've seen both. America thinks it's free because you can change the government. BUT GOVERNMENT WARS NEVER STOP because the elected officials answer only to corporations and CASH. In China they can't change the government but they are more free to change government policy. Like the policy that pulled 800 million people out of poverty. No American wants to have perpetual war and yet they do. No Chinese wants perpetual war so they don't. Who has more control. Who has more freedom? In China if you want policy changes you either organize a peaceful public display about what needs changing or join the Communist party to effect change from within. We in the west must stop being so hypocritical, changing our government changes nothing. The bombing and sanctions must go on, someone controls that but it sure isn't the voters. We in the west must start understanding that other systems work as well and perhaps better than ours. We meddle in the affairs of virtually every country in the world . The west finds democracy the best political system and thus believes it should be universal even it has many problems itself. Without this universal concept people are uncomfortable as if they're without the support of a religion. The Chinese believe the political system should be of an ever evolving nature thus they cannot tell what exactly their ultimate political system will be. Nice to hope, contradiction lies when a segment of their minorities in Western frontier Xinjiang (Formerly called East Turkistan, before China conquered it in the 1950s ) province the People have been castrated, detained in concentration camps, forced labour, and undergoing torturous maltreatment to eradicate from their minds their culture, religion and even sterilisation of their female members to halt their populsation growth, 1 million are in detention going through "cultural reform" . Was not surprising how desensitised the people are when it comes to the mistreated Uygurs in the Xinjiang semi autonomous province . It s a fallacious comparison...how could the laws of a colonial, foreign regime in an alien land be ever just and justified, their presence in China in the first place is itself unjustifiable .There's no comparison with the laws of a sovereign country. 1.About the unjust law question, I think Eric already answered but without further explaining. what he meant is that there are always difference of opinions in society, if someone find a law unjust he can disagree (within legislation)or fight(out of the legal permission), but at the same time he should also take the burdens of breaking the current law(whether it's being jailed or sanctioned). doesn't matter if it is under communist rule or colonial rules, you have to take the consequences of the behavior. However the difference is that, if it is really an unjust law that violating majority of the people, there will be some kind of concessions or there will be endless social unrest. That is the risk taken by the government. 2. About the question of genocide and Chinese in jail, if it is the internal conflict, the outside should be very careful to intervine, it's internal affairs, and how do you know you can create good results for the locals and also for your own people? this is why the West ignored the Rwanda genocide in 1994 (pure cost, no benefit, and uncertain results) while on the case of Chinese citizens in jail, it's a diplomatic problem not pure internal affairs, and of course foreign governments will be involved.

Yes! Eric answered this in various interviews in the last few years. The biggest client of the biggest polling company in China is the Chinese government. There is a closed feedback loop to inform the government of how they are doing.

AS for the freedom of speech. One thing I have point out, though I admire the eloquence of Eric, to organize is different from the potential of being able to organize. Maybe Ai Weiwei has been writing, filming video aiming for anti-government, it may be subjugated to local legal violation. But it seems to me that not just the act of organizing anti-government is being banned in China. It as been extended to the potential of it. That means as long as the gov thinks that what you are doing might be promoting the organization, they ban it. One instance is every time I posted discussion video that discusses sensitive posted on youtube onto youku, it is banned. Apparently my move is not to promote any commotion of any sorts but they ban it. that confuses me.

While I do not agree with the genocide part, I mostly agree with Eric Li ideas. Capitalistic and democracy is not the know it all, solve it all system, and in some ways its even dysfunctional and destructive, we need to look further in reforming our system, not meaning abolishing democracy, but change it and improve it. The Meritocracy political system work for China and its culture, but not might not work western cultures and visa versa. However I do think as far as genocide countries need to help and stop it, maybe not countries but a world order like the United Nations. We let wars be fought out, like in North and Sout Korea, but genocide we should not allow, that is a big no no in regard to Eric Li ideas. The rest was perfectly sound.

If ones doesn’t understand China, he can’t debate with Eric li because he has established his own story circuit. But if one understands china, he clearly know what the flaw is. For one, Chinese society has been religious throughout the history. The atheism only begun after ccp took over. So it is not the Chinese people rather the ccp are atheists. Another one, Chinese traditional ideology also promotes humanity and the equality of all mankind called 人文主义 and 天下大同. It is rather different than the nationalism ideology that Eric advocate.

Chinese have been superstitious but they are not religious under overwhelming Confucianist influence for nearly two thousand years. Superstition and Religion are two different things or two different stages, the former primitive and intuitive, latter often tends to be much more developed yet more fundamental thus more confining (as shown in Christianity and Islamism). I suggest u go read Lin Yutang's My Country and My People to gain some insights into the Chinese society from a Chinese Christian perspective.

I disagree with Mr. E. Li again what he said about Tibetan population has doubled since Chinese took over contradicts what actually happened in Tibet. Lots of Han Chinese have migrated to Tibet and Tibetan become a minority in their homeland.

Becoming minority doesn't mean genocide, doesn't mean bullying. When you immigrate to another country, you become the minority. In the old time, when there is no sense of nation, no sense of boundary, large population immigrate all the time. What is actually happening there? I don't know. I fail to see anything unique about the heritage and traditions of Chinese political system and the culture such a system fosters: a feudal empire and a culture defined by an ideology - Confucianism - that reinforces the rigid social hierarchy and status quo, much like how Christianity functioned during the middle ages in the West. Mr. Li wouldn't be the eloquent free thinking person he is today if he never left China.

In the US, they need a judge order but your lawyer can still defend your case if any unless you are a terrorist. In the UK, you can contest the supreme court judgment in the Privy council for a fair trial.

@@mk4883 In a totalitarian country, if it is a criticism against President Xi, most probably not. It all depends what case you are talking about. This is one of the flaws in china. But if you d'ont criticize the gov for its action, then I would say that you probably enjoy about the same liberties as in the west. In the west, you enjoy the freedom of speech. In china , you enjoy the freedom of fear when you get back to your hotel late at night. So, let's be fair in what we say. The west has a lot to learn from china . Likewise, china needs improvements in the freedom of speech or freedom to surf on the internet on any sensible issue.

As a venture capitalist in China, Mr. Li must gain the favors and support of the Chinese government. His pro totalitarian system of government stance is perhaps not a conclusion of purely intellectual conviction. How conveniently Mr. Li excused the disastrous mismanagement of Mao with China's economic success today. It is not healthy to idealize Maoist China and China is successful today precisely because the party abandoned Mao's harebrained ideas. Mr. Li lacks intellectual integrity.

I don't see where Eric "excused Mao". He said China itself doesn't yet know the best form of gov't yet, it is evolving. He said that when his father was put in prison it was unfair. China makes many mistakes but it is on a path to constantly reforming itself; watch his TED talk where he speaks about this.
