My 2018 Rockhopper has taken everything I've thrown at it, and begged for more. It's done the Cuyuna Crusher, Maah Daah Hey 100, and multiple 12 hour endurance races. We also crushed the local roadies on Strava last year, logging nearly 1300 miles of pavement. The only thing I've had to replace are tires and the chain (twice). The stock coil shock and 3x drivetrain have held up well. Its my race bike, my commuter, my training partner. Specialized knows how to build a bike. Keep pressure in the tires and oil on the chain and it'll go.

I had a 2010 rockhopper 29 as my first bike. It was so awesome and I rode that way harder than it was meant to go. I took it to bike parks, and crazy 50 mile epics. My dad even still rides it now! I would totally recommend that as an entry bike.

I just bought 2020 Rockhopper about 2 months ago. After another bike got stolen. I did test rides on probably a dozen bikes from both Specialized and Cannondale. Outside of the QR axles, which really don't hold you back. These bikes rock. I bought an entry level Rockhopper for the record because I didn't have the budget to get the higher end model at this time. Out of all the bikes I was shown, I was surprised when my local bike shop owner suggested this model out of all the others he had. The 2x8 that comes on it has plenty of gears, it's very stable it runs a 2.3 width front and rear tire. Models have different tire set ups. Mine has a specialized ground control up front and fast trak in the back. It does ok on commutes to work. Trails that's a different story, this bike will definitely bring you some confidence even at the entry level. To sum up my rant. I am a huge fan of these bikes. You don't have to spend thousands of dollars to have fun. These bikes will prove it to ya.

They sell a ton of these in 'emerging markets', and with good reason. I had a chance to have an informal conversation with some Specialized reps on a Stumpjumper press launch. I asked one of the reps if there were any models in their line that people were sleeping on. He said, 'this bike [stumpjumper] is superb, but there are guys in Brazil that are absolutely crushing it on Rockhoppers that no one here [fancy bike shop] would ride; the Rockhopper is great'.

I use to live in a poor country. Back then I had a budget Cannondale Trail 29 frame from 2013. It was a wild machine once paired with a second hand FOX Factory for and a complete new XT M785 group (including wheelset, excluding pedals). Now I live in a rich country and I have a modern carbon XC HT. Somehow I could still swear how that old Cannondale was somehow better (This is probably cause I was younger and had more stamina)😅

Case, I'm from Brazil and you're right. Here, our taxes over bikes are insane, so buying carbon bikes or high-end aluminum ones isn't for everyone's pocket. Here, the majority of our bikes are entry-level ones, and culturally, I notice that beginners prefer to buy and Specialized or Scott with lower-spec groupsets than a national brand with better components. Brazilian people tend to undermine their own products, and that pushes our sport back in terms of popularity.

As an entry level bike, most new buyers are not going to spend any more money on upgrades. Hence, the QR hubs are perfectly matched to the rest of the components. Plus, a new set of nice rims and wheels would cost more than the entire bike!
@jbaillie4 жыл бұрын
Every bike brand should have something comparable to the Elite spec'd bike. An alloy hardtail with an entry-level airspring fork, Deore or similar-level finishing kit, basic 1x crank. Instead every brand jumps from their cheap Acera/Suntour option to $2,000 rigs. That in-between should be a big market.

Very, VERY similar to my Trek Roscoe, even so far as to the duct for internal routing being almost identical. Likely made in the same factory. "Specialized A1 Premium Aluminium" is standard aluminium 6061 alloy just like 100 million bikes out there in the world. But A1 Premium sounds just better. :) And although it is marketed as an entry model, it is more upright for touring instead of competitive riding, plus it can mount a bike rack at the rear. The top end Rockhopper gives as very nice bikepacking touring package.
@tristandesade86354 жыл бұрын
It also means nothing. Subtypes of 6061 alloy have code names starting with a letter "T".
@mac_smith334 жыл бұрын
6061 refers to the alloy of the aluminium (for 6061 that means magnesium and silicon are mixed in) and you are correct that all frame are 6061. 6061 is really the only reasonable choice since it is inexpensive, reasonably strong, and weldable. The "A1" designation more than likely refers to the post fabrication heat treatment that the frame will under go, but might also specify other processes that affect ride quality (tube profiles, ect). Since welded aluminium looses significant strength when it is welded frame with require a heat treatment in order to restore it. The heat treatment process will be designed to balance different properties of the aluminium to achieve a specific strength, stiffness, ect. Sorry for rambling but material science is a very deep very boring rabbit hole.
@adambcvg4 жыл бұрын
They've used A1 since the late 90s
@dannybeeh63324 жыл бұрын
Until a bike is made from 7075 aluminium or another high grade alloy, it does not deserve to be called premium aluminium. 6061 is your everyday cheapie.
@jr100214 жыл бұрын
Tristan de Sade The T is the temper - meaning the heat treatment applied to the alloy, not its composition. But it’s true that AA6061 has a fairly wide composition range within the specification so indeed it is possible that A1 premium is more “specialized” than AA6061 used by others.

@tristandesade86354 жыл бұрын
Because Shimano is losing battle in the premium brand market. I'm not insider, but I'm pretty sure that SRAM is employing some sort of smart/aggressive strategy. Also, the consumer taste is probably shifting. Almost every cheap crappy bike I ever saw had something Shimano. The first time I saw SRAM, it was on a really nice bike. And the second time. And the third time. You get the picture. Mercedes would not be Mercedes, if they made millions of cheap crappy car. Hence, SRAM is a true upscale, or "bikers" brand, Shimano is simply a mass brand that caters to you aunt. If you are a premium brand (like Specialised) you want to increase perceived high-value of you product. SRAM works better for that purpose.

I'm thinking of getting the base model Rockhopper. I'm going to use it for commuting and light riding in the city. Is this a good option for me? I want something that is not crazy expensive to fix, reliable, strong, and will last a while.

They’re practically indestructible. It’s hard to go wrong.

Is the front wheel in the wrong way? That quick release looks weird to me. Agree on the qr-axles. Don't understand why they still have them so much.

Reading the comments and people complaining about the bike having QR skewers and its not worth it. Dont forget when MTB was in its early stages bikes were RACED with much worse technology and kept doing it for years on XC, DH, 24 hours and every type of trail in between.

Looked cool. Shame about the qr wheels.

MARVIN SMALL I wish you could convert the rear to through axle, like you can with the front

Yes it’s a total “show stopper” for me having QR on a MTB. I am not bothering to watch the rest of the video after hearing that 😬

Hi I just started getting into mountain biking- is there a reason why one would not want a quick release wheel?
@Futures624 жыл бұрын
@@fillyal85 I have thru axle on a Cube, it's shit and I wish it was QR, you have to take tools in case of puncture and they thread = no ride home, wait for spares
