If you've studied this period you must have been aware that the film in it's portrayal of the war of independence had a pro-IRA bias and an anti-treaty bias? Surely you don't believe this is objective history?

@@jonoessex This film's objective was to show how the civil war divided the people, how it divided families, how it pitted brother against brother. It could just as well had been painted the other way round, the result would have been the same. And you must not confuse this version of the IRA, that of the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War, with that of the Troubles - which really only started after the split of what would come to be known as the Official IRA and resulted in the formation of the PIRA in December 1969. Those were different entities.

@@renderizer01 The film is made by Ken Loach (amongst others). He has always been a sympathiser with organisations like the Provisional IRA. The purpose of this film is to get the viewer to sympathise with them as well. Yes it's set 50 years before the troubles but the modern IRA were motivated by the ideology that partition is unfinished business and that the struggle must continue until all of Ireland is independent. That is the film' s agenda.

In reply to @jonoessex and any others spreading deliberate lies about this film, the Old IRA, and the War Of Independence: (1)Of course the Irish language was suppressed _ how the hell do you think English became the main language in Ireland? It certainly wasn’t by consent. How the hell do you think English became the main language in Wales, Scotland, and the colonies of the British Empire, all of which had their own languages? It certainly wasn’t by voluntary wish of the colonised. (2)Of course the Black & Tans, the Auxiliaries, British Intelligence, and some regular British troops like the Essex Regiment (who regularly tortured prisoners) were far more vicious and brutal, obscenely so, than the Old IRA. This was testified to by many of the regular British Army who despised the above much as many of the Wehrmacht despised the SS in WW2. It was also testified to by sections of the British public and parliamentary opposition who investigated what was going on in Ireland. Amazingly, it was even testified to by the Auxiliaries’ *own commander,* F.P. Crozier, an *Ulster Unionist,* who resigned in total disgust at the atrocities committed by his own men. It was even testified to by Southern Unionists of the “Big House” landlord class who began the war as firm supporters of the British: the Old IRA occasionally billeted units by force on these people for food and supplies (as an alternative to constantly risking their own, much poorer, supporters’ lives). The Southern Unionists who thus came in contact with the Old IRA were amazed at their decency and discipline (far from what British propaganda had led them to expect), and commented on it publicly afterwards to British newspapers. These people were also visited by the Tans and Auxiliaries, supposedly “their own side”, and were outraged by their behaviour. (3)You sneer in contempt about Teddy’s emotion when he executes his own brother, which he believes he has no choice about. In fact, we know from history that Kevin O’ Higgins defended the execution of his friend Rory O’ Connor, in the Dail during the Civil War _ and broke down while doing so. This was particularly noted because of O’Higgins’ reputation as a “cold man of strength”. But there were many such agonising incidents in the Civil War, which split families and communities down the middle. (4)You glibly assume that the Old IRA shot anyone and everyone suspected of being a spy or informer. In fact there are plenty of documented examples of accused collaborators being released, or in a few cases, ordered to leave Ireland, because the evidence against them was not sufficient. I don’t believe that you are unaware of the truth of these 4 points. Therefore, I repeat: you are spreading deliberate lies.
@jonoessex
@jonoessex Жыл бұрын
TWTSTB leads the viewer to believe that the Irish language was suppressed by law this was not the case. People did often choose to speak English over Irish. There was no legal suppression of Irish at that time. I do not believe that the Black and tans were more brutal than the IRA. Both sides were brutal and both sides had likeable characters amongst them. The depictions of the tans are recreations of stereotypes. There were atrocities committed by the British forces. People who commit atrocities is war can be perfectly likeable people. The bad things that were done by the British does not justify the racist depiction of them. Many people including Ernie O'Malley praised the auxillaries for their courage and bravery. In order to keep us on the IRA's side throughout a big show is made of the emotions of IRA members before they kill people whilst when the Brits kill people they do it because of their wicked nature. I'm sure your average member of the IRA was no less prepared to use violence than your average black and tans. I'm not spreading any lies.

@cou1202
@cou1202 Жыл бұрын
@@samdaniels2 Well, the history of Scotland up to James VI of Scotland (or if you prefer, James I of England) is a complex weave which I'm not going to pronounce on now, except to say that a far greater percentage in Scotland renounced the Catholic faith than in Ireland. But in short format _ yes, I would say that England was the dominant power, and remained so after the Acts Of Union. If you don't like the word "colonised" for Scotland ... fine, doesn't bother me. But I would say that England has always called the shots and Scotland doesn't seem to like it. You may be aware that one or two Scottish people want independence? But regardless, I've never met a single Scot _ on *EITHER* side of the independence debate _ who doesn't complain loudly and long about rule from London, with regard to almost *any* aspect of life you choose to name. And I lived in various parts of Britain for 20 years. In fact, Scottish people are far more vehement about England than Irish people outside of Northern Ireland. You can argue about why, but I would guess it's because the 26 Counties has got its independence and Scotland hasn't.
@cou1202
@cou1202 Жыл бұрын
@@jonoessex You *ARE* spreading lies, and you deliberately distort anything and everything to defend even the most unspeakable acts by the British _ including things British governments *themselves* have stopped lying about. You've been doing so for years. Your first claim, about the language, is a classic example: a thin veneer of superficial legalism concealing the wider truth: The *TRUTH* is that, from the Penal Laws onwards, being an Irish Catholic who spoke only Irish meant being locked out of status, privileged education, or professional-level money. In effect, there was a system of apartheid in the service of British rule, but based on religion, not skin colour. Anglicans were on top, "Nonconformist" Protestant denominations in between, Catholics on the lower end _ and Catholics who only spoke Irish *FIRMLY* on the bottom. Despite Catholic Emancipation, even as late as 1916, much of this remained: Sean O'Casey testified how his mother always told him to emphasise that he was a Protestant whenever he applied for a job. Yes, you're *superficially* correct that there wasn't an actual government *law* against the Irish language _ there didn't need to be. After the Famine (deliberately allowed to happen by British governments _ I bet you'll defend that with *more* lies), many Irish parents forced their own children to stop speaking their own language _ even though many of those parents knew no English themselves. This was not done from a sudden freely-decided spontaneous love of the works of Shakespeare!! It was done out of deliberately-engineered poverty brought about by the way society was structured in Ireland _ to suit British colonial rule. As for everything else in your latest post, you are simply repeating lies which I already refuted. In the case of the Tans and Auxies, I have already indicated how plenty of sources *FROM THEIR OWN SIDE* denounced them and contrasted them with the Old I.R.A. You are a cold-blooded, deliberate and repeated anti-Irish liar. I've even seen you defend the unspeakable Stormont regime of 1922-1969, which has the dubious distinction of praise for its repression from the "architect of apartheid" in South Africa, Dr. Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd. Even by the low standards of KZbin, you have less credibility than anyone I've ever seen.

@@cou1202 Scotland was the one who suggested forming a union after their failed attempt at an empire. Hardly being 'colonised'. "But I would say that England has always called the shots and Scotland doesn't seem to like it." This is an empirical claim. What is the argument for that? "You may be aware that one or two Scottish people want independence?" Now, maybe. But you're fallaciously assuming that was *always* the case. "But regardless, I've never met a single Scot _ on EITHER side of the independence debate _ who doesn't complain loudly and long about rule from London, with regard to almost any aspect of life you choose to name." If this is your criteria for being 'colonised', then the North of England was also 'colonised'. "In fact, Scottish people are far more vehement about England than Irish people outside of Northern Ireland. " What does this even mean?
