This is a great video. Entire chess sets have been purchased simply out of love of the knights. Knights are the piece requiring hand carving and thus dramatically affect the price of a set. I REALLY like the Dubrovnik and BCE knights! Please show Zagreb knight too! I hope Noj starts making Zagreb sets!

Studying chess I learn that it is an entirely White European game. I heard a creepy mideastern guy telling us innocent kids at highschool how it was invented by his people. Young as we were we didn't know any better. But you could tell he was making a boastful point out of it because he was for some reason smirking ESPECIALLY at me in the eye as he knew I really love my folk and country even as kid. Sure enough just I suspected the infil was selling us a load of dirt. This great and BEAUTIFUL European game of chess is entirely unique in every way. From the chivalrous mediaeval checkered board, to the names and movements and looks of every single piece to the overall rules of the game to the annotation system to the uniquely European invention, and chess introduction, of the chess clock, making it the fastest and most ubiquitous game on the planet complete with great international martyr-heroes who spoke truth to power like Triple-A (Alekhine) and Bobby Fischer. So that old creep back at school can eat his sandal and clean up his own house. To say that chess came out of the mideast is like saying shogi is an Arabic/Iranian game. Thank God the truth sets us free from the devils and all their lies.

I really like the knight in the final game of Netflix's Queen's Gambit, which look pretty close to actual soviet chess pieces at the time. On the show it has no details at all on it on either side of the knight, it's just a clean abstract curved shape, maybe some slight contour around the nose. And the rooks are so fat and shiny. I think the first Staunton knight you showed is the best one in your set. Good detail, no goofy smile, strong round looking horse.

I think it's cool how you can judge a chess set just by how it's knight looks. It's also the first piece I look at when considering to buy a set.

great idea for the video! the first of Dubrovnik knights, 1950 replica..this is like a knight from gods, maybe the most beautiful knight ever, even it is a replica, that knight is possibly crafted with even greater precision than an original..absolutely amazing. It would be great if you could compare other pieces from various sets!

I love my knight the best. I recently had them made from Staunton Castle in India and it’s the Columbian ll Staunton 4 1/2” set. It’s in boxwood and African Paudouk and it’s gorgeous!!! Waiting for the board I ordered now. I can’t wait. It’s amazing to me just how quick and deeply I fell in love with these pieces. They had a weird effect on me.

@izmet Since you clearly know a thing or two about design, or at least designing chess sets, I have a question. Do you find dissonance in the Staunton design? It features abstract lathe-turned pieces except for the knight, which is frequently elaborately carved to look like a horse. Sure we like looking at them, but it seems very wrong to me. If you were going to redesign the knight, forgetting about the current "must look like a horse" idea, what would you do?
@IzmetFekali Жыл бұрын
Exactly, good point. The Staunton knight is the only piece that is not a symbol. (Queen is symbolyzed by a crown, king by a cross and bigger posture, bishop by a mitre, pawns by simplicity and small body.) I have thought a lot about this problem, but decided against replacing the horse head with some symbol (sword, helmet etc.) as this idea would surely be shunned by players. I'm afraid we are stuck with a horse forewer. Tradition rulz.

@phillycheesetake9 жыл бұрын
I think the Pentagram knight is great, a very simplified design. Although I'm a big fan of the original Staunton knights (and still prefer them), I've always thought that it was the odd-ball of the Staunton pattern. The Pentagram knight might be a step in the direction of a design which will fit in better, carved from a single piece of wood, and simple in aesthetic. I'm not a fan of the squared/flat surfaces, nor the large shoulder, and the groove cut near the base to harken back to the original. Those things I would change given the choice.

Well, my friend, you got me there. For some reason I dislike that set. It's probably because it has a made up history. It was *never* played with in any tournament in Zagreb or on Yugoslav soil for that matter. It is just a derivative of the Dubrovnik design, made quite recently ten or fifteen years ago. I can't help but dislike the marketing effort done on it. I do realize you probably have, use and like it. Please forgive me if I hurt your feelings.

I do not understand the enthusiasm about the "Dubrovnik" chess pieces - in my opinion, by far the most unasthetic chess piece design ever made, and the "Dubrovnik" knight is the ugliest chess piece I have ever seen - head and torso of the "Dubrovnik" knight is just one unseperated chunk. Horrible!
