Thank you for this post Jim about one of my favorite films. I'm glad you also included a shot of the English one sheet poster that is oriented horizontally rather than vertically as the U.S. poster is. The English version is proudly displayed on a wall in my home. Having studied both versions closely it appears that the English version is a repainted version. Look closely and you will notice a difference in the faces, the colors and the placement of the characters in the scene. Thanks again Jim!

Rolfe!! One of the most underrated characters in the film! Despite his dark turn, he is spectacular in the gazebo scene

He truly is spectacular. The only other cast member (besides Maria, the Captain and Mother Superior) who gets a whole musical number. And Daniel Truhitte (who plays Rolf) actually does his own singing!

It's so interesting that they gave Maria a pink dress for this image. In those days audiences were much more open to interpretation.

I have been thinking about the choice of pink, as well. Good point about audiences then, much less literalness. Plus, I think the fact that the films were not instantly accessible as they are now (and have been for decades at this point).
