Though i definitely agree that life in the Forbidden City was pretty dangerous for everyone due to the various plots and schemes running around..lives were not easy for the poor family either in those times.. Many daughters during those times were essentially sold off and sons lived harsh lives and many were forced to conscript to the many military expeditions during those times even between fiefdoms.. Drought, famine, plagues and other epidemics and even basic illness took lives of many, as there were barely enough medicines or legit doctors for the villages.. but comparetively, most of the residents of the Forbidden city be it the Emperor or the servant.. everyone's lives were always in danger due to constant infighting and schemes..

Im new and I just started watching all these clips, but I was wondering. Does the Emperor sleep with all these women and get them pregnant? And the wife is okay with it?

Apparently, the emperor was supposed to impregnate a bunch of women - empresses and concubines. Make as many heirs as possible. This is my guess anyway. Life expectancy back then wasn’t that great, and the empress could only be pregnant with one baby (unless twins, of course) at a time, so he had to keep knocking up more women. I guess the monarchy in China didn’t have the same rules of legitimacy the way that monarchies in Europe did (only the King’s wife could produce legitimate heirs. Other children of the king by other women were bastards). Can you imagine how different lines of succession would’ve been had some rulers in Europe been able to let illegitimate children inherit the throne?

In Chinese history very rarely did the son of the empress become Emperor. Most of the emperor I have learned about have been son of imperial consorts then that lady would become holy mother (can't remember the right title they would get) sometime, Chinese imperial family was very interesting

@@christyartinger3260 Jodi is right. The concubines and consorts are all confined to The Forbidden City until they die. Their servants are also either women, girls or eunuchs. There are no men that are allowed to be close to them. These methods help keep the succession clean ensuring that the next emperor that ascends to the throne is not any other man's except the previous emperor's. Technically speaking, these concubines and consorts are all 'wives' of the emperor but only one wife is the legitimate one (which is the empress). The empress is not only the wife of the emperor but also the role model of women for all women in the empire which also includes in the harem. The empress is expected to be magnanimous, obedient and motherly. They are also the manager of the harem and is often welcoming towards new concubines that the emperor adds to the harem.
