Your videos are always entertaining and educational, I'm glad you're out there sharing your info with the rest of us out here so we're not blindly stumbling around. Question for you on the topic of Color & filters - do you do any binning with your mono RGB filtered shots, maybe 2x2, while leaving the Lum/Detail layer a 1x1? Just started getting my feet wet with my ASI1600MM pro and haven't found a clear answer/explanation to that question yet. And lastly, the Celestron AutoFocuser.... OMG, I love it! Thanks for giving us all the heads up on it - that little critter is amazing!
@DylanODonnell
@DylanODonnell 5 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks! I don’t do binning for the rgb but I do process the living Jesus out of it.. the layer can be rubbish as long as the L is good so I blur out the noise, minimum the stars etc.

What an excellent idea to summarize all these configurations. Although i'm sticking to my moded DSLR for astrophotography -and I'm pretty sure ther's still a lot I can do with it- it' s good to understand better how these multiple palettes can be reached. On a side note, some weeks before 2019 NEAF, my daughter met you on a beach at Byron bay. If I understood her well, you were trying to make people aware of the sky beauty by showing the Moon craters through a telescope. At least, she was deeply impressed by what you showed her. It is always much more effective when somebody else teach you something... than your own parents :)
@DylanODonnell
@DylanODonnell 5 жыл бұрын
Hey that's funny.. I do outreach but usually to schools around Byron and sometimes groups of kids come through the observatory but the person on the beach was almost certainly not me. The last time I took a portable scope out with the public was during the lunar eclipse at the lighthouse :) There is another guy I think with a portable scope .. I think I've met him once :)

Once again... nailed it! I’d just add another tip: when doing LRGB or HaRGB with a mono camera, since you have that rich Luminance layer, you can even use Bin2 (or twice as much binning as the L) to speed up the capture or get more color data for the same exposure time. All you have to do in processing is “double” the RGB stacked subs.
@DylanODonnell

That’s right! In fact the rgb layer can be complete rubbish, blurry etc. doesn’t matter :)

Hey Dylan fantastic video, very well summed up. I always had a question on something you touched on: I was wondering what RGB photography using filter wheel and r g b filters was bringing compared to say have 2 cameras, one color one, one mono, where with the first one you would get the colors, and with the second one your luminance layer, both combined in photoshop. Although might appear a bit more expensive, it seems to me like a much easier practical handling compared to using only one camera but with a filter wheel and filters? Thxs again. Keep it up.
@DylanODonnell
@DylanODonnell 5 жыл бұрын
Yeh see that’s why I don’t really use a filter wheel (much) for truecolour stuff. I do the Ha + OSC rgb trick with two cameras and the end result is going to be basically identical. Easy as :)

Glad to find this vid, though I admit I am still slightly confused. I just got a mono cam (1600) and getting LRGB filters to practice with. I am going to have to watch this again to see whether, at F/2, I should do 4 sets of images and flats, or a luminescence set and then, what? A color set with a different, OSC camera? That's where I got confused. Ha, I will get it figured out. But the multiple sets of flats looks like the toughest issue, as they have to come from a vertical RASA with an LED panel atop the dew shield. I will for sure be getting the F/2 baaders when I can afford them, right now I suck anyway. Not completely in love with "false color", but I love the resolution.

Hey Dylan Thanks for your channel! Too many of us (me...) get too caught up in the orthodoxy of How It Must Be Done, and end up having what should have been a fun night of shooting ruined by a misstep in our overly precise process. Good to have a reality check on how to keep the joy of this beautiful hobby intact and still come out with a spectacular result. Props! Now to completely contradict myself: with a process question i have a rasa 11 and am pretty much baffled at easily getting flats shot between filter/camera changes. What is your process, or do you even worry flats for each and just use a single channel for them? Thx!
@DylanODonnell
@DylanODonnell 5 жыл бұрын
I don't do flats at all.. instead I'm OCD about dust on the filters and camera sensor etc and make sure everything is clean so I don't have to deal with dust motes. Then all a flat is for is vignette correction really, which is simple enough to do in post with a background extraction or synthetic flat :) I think the way you are supposed to do it is with sky flats, but it all gets a bit tricky as the flat is ruined if you change the rotation at all after taking them, which you typically want to after dark.

I’ve got a modified DSLR is it even worth doing narrowband with RGB? I want to shoot some false color but I don’t know if it’s even possible with a DSLR. Which channel would you extract the HA data from? I assume the red and what about OII and SII?
@DylanODonnell
@DylanODonnell 4 жыл бұрын
I think even modified DSLRs still have a colour bayer matrix so you're only using 1/3rd to 1/4 of the pixels for narrowband. It's possible with dithering to compensate but not as good as a mono camera for narrowband.

Best of luck with that this one is going to be hard to beat! It is definitely not too long, it is very upbeat and captivating and it just works and comes together really really well. Ps don't listen to them, it is not too loud! It makes sure we are all awake and paying attention :')

Ok I don't know anything now. When shooting Jupiter, exactly how long can I go without planet rotation and how do I fit the time in to use all the filters. I have a zwo asi 120 mc and use sharpcap. It has some nice features but I generally only use what I know about. Help
@DylanODonnell
@DylanODonnell 5 жыл бұрын
Switch to firecapture.. it’s free and awesome :) you don’t want to go above 45 seconds per channel to get the full RGB set without rotation blurring. And a motorised filterwheel helps.. FC will do all 3 in succession in a single click.

@@DylanODonnell Thank you! I've heard lots about both sharpcap and firecapture so I just downloaded one lol. I'm only using a Meade ETX 125 but I'm getting better the more I image😁. The only I don't understand too much is how to capture tens of thousands of frames in that period of time. I have my gain generally set to around 50 is and my exposure waaaaay low and I can only squeeze about 2000 maybe in that time. Is it my computer too?
@DylanODonnell

Insane Insane it could be the speed of your HD (ssd drives are better) or USB port. But also make sure you are tightly cropped into the planet (region of interest) as this makes the FPS way higher.

@@DylanODonnell got it 😁. My computer uses a USB 2.0 and I have the 3.0 camera. I heard that won't really make a difference unless I have a large scope but I have asi cap for my phone and a USB 3.0 TGcord and the videos even are fast and smooth.

Sorry I'm like two years late, but what about IR? I saw some people talking about using IR captured data as the luminous layer, but they also say technically that's not correct. And when is IR capture useful? All I know so far it's less affected by the atmosphere but then there's no "color" with it.

Sadly you can't put a filter wheel on a RASA..... can you? : P This is really interesting though, OSC + Ha exposure..... I have two identical refractors, and was thinking of getting dual mono cams and doing L+R and then G+B exposures, but now I'm thinking, I could get one mono and one colour cam, and just do Ha + OSC... food for thought
@DylanODonnell
@DylanODonnell 5 жыл бұрын
Not a filter wheel, but you can use a filter drawer .. check out my first light photo with the rasa 8... it’s narrowband :) Ha+OSC works really well for me .. super quick results.
