As a Foundation Member of the new Toastmasters Without Borders on line club I thought I would take up the challenge of getting my next Competent Communicator award completely online, earning it by delivering speeches at Firebirds Collective and this club. Both clubs mean a lot to me but for very different reasons. Toastmasters Without Borders is based in Victoria Australia, my home state and helps me to maintain connections between I and my home town, Toastmasters District 73, while enabling me to continue building the strong connections I have with Toastmasters New Zealand, District 72.
In Early 2016 I delivered my Ice Breaker speech to the Firebirds Collective which is a speech where you introduce yourself to your club and talk about what you have done in your life. In my speech, “A Colourful Journey”, I created a slideshow with photos of city lights, where I live now, the job I have with Blind Foundation and Toastmasters New Zealand. I also wanted to practice giving speeches with visual presentations.
I gave this speech again later in 2016 to my other online club, Toastmasters Without Borders. Given the nature of online Toastmasters and my own job where I am required to travel throughout the North Island of New Zealand I came on from a motel room in Napier, which is in the Hawkes Bay region. I was the reserve speaker that night and when I came on line I was asked if I could fill a vacant speaking slot. Fortunately, due to the wonders of modern technology I had my slideshow in iCloud and all I needed were a few minutes to go over the content of the original speech and make sure the slides were still in order. Then I propped my iPad up above my MacBook Air in close proximity to the web cam on the MacBook Air so I could make the recording.
While I delivered my speech I was able to change slides at the right time while being seen by the other online club members. We do this by granting presenter rights to a speaker in our online meeting software, Go to Meeting from Citrix. Unfortunately, on the Mac I have not yet figured out how to see the time keeper while in presenter mode and I forgot to ask them for verbal notification as to how I was going for time.
While I went overtime, I received a great and fare evaluation from my Evaluator Moses Cherrington who used plenty of commendation, recommendation and more commendation. In fact Moses’s point of recommendation was somethng from which I learned and can cary over to future speeches, which is why we have evaluations.
What followed is my recording, adapted with with cutouts of my slides from the Keynote slideshow. I produced this in Apple iMovie. I have left the Audio track intact with no edits of of the speech itself so as to preserve the original speaking rate and cadence.
