Something about your video that, with all the good habits I was fortunate to be taught, made it come together nicely. Biggest challenge right now is being stuck in bed so I am just accepting what is and I am not concerning myself with great progress. When I can sit comfortably and relaxed for a half hour, I will continue with some lessons. I can appreciate having to take it slow and am making sure I am just making it fun and not focussing so much on a destination. AND, hahaha, I would like to play with working on coordinating hands doing different things. When I try playing chord, arpeggio... with left and then a melody or even just wandering with the right hand, it doesn't take long for it to fall apart and digresses to plucking with one finger on right. I haven't spent any time trying to develop that skill yet tho

Thank you for this video, it is my very first lesson and it it definitely giving me more encouragement in finalizing my own decision to learn how to play this instrument. The fingering positions are something I can relate to in this video. When I was in high school I played alto saxophone and I was 16. I am teaching myself to play the harp, but first had to teach myself to read music. Close to two years ago, I found a used Blevins Encore 34 string harp and fell so in love with the sound of anything played on it! I taught myself a handful of songs back then (using one finger on both hands, ha), but then I felt like that was a far as I could go without lessons. I played those few songs less and less; only enough to remember the notes. I decided to look for online help recently and feel so fortunate to have found your website!! I am encouraged now that I am learning to play with three fingers and on both hands. I feel so fortunate to have found your website! Thank you so much :) I hope to seek Skype lessons from you as soon as I get a lot of practice time and feel a bit more confident.

You're such a good teacher. I've never played the harp (though I want to, which is why I'm here), but I can immediately understand what you're talking about. It's very helpful the way you've talked about technical issues (like the string buzz) that we don't need to worry about yet, because I would absolutely worry about it if you hadn't specified that it's not important right now. Since you talked about it, I can see how worrying about something so far beside the point of the lesson would probably impede my growth as a harpist. You just really know what you're doing, and not only that, you know how to communicate what needs to happen to your audience in a way that's helpful and meaningful. I've been teaching myself for a couple years. This is a great warmup and exercise for tempo and fluidity. Thank you. I'm new to your site and I find all your videos so helpful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I am playing in the foyer at my church in December. I'm not ready to perform. I do solo singing all the time in front of a full church of 600 people no problem. But playing my harp I'm afraid I won't stay focused.

Hi Robbin, thanks for your comment! Maybe you would find my video on performance anxiety helpful? If I were preparing for a show in December and feeling nervous about performing, I would create lots of opportunities between now and December to play for other people.... multiple times a week, if possible! Even if it's just a friend or neighbour or even a delivery person. What concerns you the most - is it learning the pieces, or the fear of playing the harp in front of other people?

Yes and no. Back in 1993 I plucked the strings of a lever harp for the first time and loved the sounds!! I'm a classical guitarist, so I'm very familiar with nylon strings, and stringed instruments. I wrote four pieces for harp on my Finale software because I've never owned a harp. But that is now changing. I'll be purchasing my first harp soon, and for some reason, I've enjoyed the sounds of Dusty Strings harps. I can't wait to own my first harp!!

That was great, I'm just starting to learn the harp. I was lucky enough to have a friend lone me her harp for a few weeks to see how I get on. ( Its a bit of a struggle ) I play violin and classical guitar, not to a very high standard but ok for folk music. I can read music ( on the treble clef ) but find plucking with my left hand a bit difficult. I guess I just need to keep trying, and now I have watched your video it has inspired me to keep going. I tried playing one of these things yesterday and found it much harder than expected. That said, the one thing you said that was not correct is the best tip you gave. Guitar is not picking one note at a time for finger pickers. (Flat pickers, yes, but that’s a much different technique.) Moreover, classical guitarists are trained to keep fingers in position to start and only release that when they’re advanced enough to know when it’s advantageous to do so. This instrument needs to be approached more like a guitar than a piano. Thank you for this video. I may reconsider taking up the instrument. Yesterday had me content to sticking with guitar.

In tune...And much faster than flying fingers.. I say the principle is we are always in and on the strings and we only are "TAKING AWAY TEMPORARILY". not the opposite of "putting" each note.... At 2.41 the assertion that guitarists set the fingers to play one note at a time is not accurate. While we usually don't plant the right fingers on the strings we do anticipate the positions of our right fingers in groups especially for chords and arpeggios. It is, in fact, amazing how similar guitar and harp technique are (i.e.plucking finger trajectory to heel of hand, avoiding finger curl, etc). That said, I very much enjoyed and appreciate this video.

I can learn at my speed, and whatch the vidéo over and over again, I even slow the speed sometimes. I love your beautiful “thumb space.” The only technical concern I had for your students and fans was the added tension of holding the un-used fingers in your palm. If the hands were truly relaxed the fingers that were not being used would tend to hang down loosely near the placed strings or, in other words, follow along with the fingers being pre-placed. But then I noted later in your video you actually let this happen. BTW I am charmed by your delightful personality!

Pleasure! This is an Ogden from Lyon and Healy. A classical guitarist would call what you do a "Rest Stroke". The last joint in the finger locks. A "Free Stroke" allows the finger tip to avoid the plane made by the strings by its arch, especially with a fingernail.

i LOVE how round the tone is when u play. I haven't yet bought my harp, so im wondering if the wholeness of the sound is ur finesse or if the type of harp ur playing helps create that beauty. ive watched other videos of people who've been playing for years and i really hate when it sounds stringy (ironic since it is a stringed instrument) but I'm sure u know what i mean though lol. Anyways, even though im sure it's ur mastery of the harp that is producing the delicious fullness I'd like to be able to make too, is there a type of harp that I should purchase with that in mind? >.

Hi there! Some of the tone comes from the way I play, but if you’re comparing to other skilled harpists then probably a big part of the difference is the harp itself. My harp is a gut string harp with high string tension and a very warm tone, whereas many other lever harpists play harps with a brighter sound - particularly if they have nylon strings or even fluorocarbon. So I would say you should look at gut strings, but also the harp itself makes a big difference. Mine is an Ogden from Lyon & Healy - try listening to other people playing the Ogden on KZbin and see if you think it’s the harp or my playing. Also try listening to Catriona McKay - she plays a Starfish harp with folk gut strings (slightly lower tension than mine). It’s still quite warm but has more brightness than mine. In comparison Maev Gilchrist plays a Thormahlen Ceili with fluorocarbon strings which has a much brighter sound. Of course they’re also both playing a berry different style to me but I’m sure you can hear the difference in their harps 😊 Also listen to Ailie Robertson - she has often played a Fisher harp with nylon strings. Then have a listen to people playing Dusty Strings FH harps. They have a lot of depth and body to the sound but it is brighter than mine. I’m about to get a Jolie Hybrid which has a brighter sound too - when you hear that you’ll get to hear the difference with me playing a similar sized harp with a brighter sound 😊👍🏻

Thank you so much for this post. I did the same mistake when I was self taught. As soon as I got a teacher, this was corrected very quickly. What other mistakes are there made by self taught harpists.

To answer your question, another common mistake of self-taught harpists is trying to play music that is beyond what their technique can support. Yes, I know. I didn't do that because I knew. I stopped taking harp lessons because of financial reasons. But I made it to level grade 3. This level I can continue on my own because we saw some pieces and worked on it. But for grade 4 I will need some harp lessons again. And for arpeggios.

That depends on how much income I work for. I am a freelancer in Greece. We earn very little here. Thus I have to be wise with my expenses. And at the end it depends on how much my harp teacher wants per hour:) I saw very high prices in the internet that are not reachable for me. Some want from 50 to 100 Dollars per hour...

I had that problem but over the years I have over come it. I play by ear and have a good ear for music on the strings. Sometimes on new learned stuff, it occasionaly happens but I try to overcome it.

Oh my! Thank you so much for this!! It really helped me improve my playing. There was one particular song which I thought was so hard to play, but when I realized I had been playing with my fingers one by one and fixed it, it turned out to be so much easier!! :D By the way, I was wondering if you have any advice or recommendations as to how to know what fingers use when playing? I am self-taught and I adapt piano sheet music to harp so it can get quite tricky as to know what finger I should use for playing the notes. Is there a technique to know which one I should use or is it just intuitive? Thank you so much in advance!! :D

@@LearningtheHarp Thanks, anyway. I just got my first harp yesterday. I am 55 this month and I have dreamt of this for years. It is a small Waring 19 string cardboard harp but sounds quite good enough to learn with. I just tackled tuning it with your video in your beginner series. I am in love with your videos. I will start with the basics in your videos to familiarize myself with the instrument and, if I can afford them, when I reach a certain point, I may reach out for a lesson if you are still doing those. This is my first instrument and I have to learn to read music, as well. Thank you so much for your sweet and oh so helpful tutorials!
