But...he wasn't. They show specifically that he DEEPLY cared for his family, to the point where he sacrificed the ability to bond with and truly raise them, in order to protect the world, but more importantly to him, THEM, from Gozer's return. He has a hidden shelf in his personal workshop filled to the brim with pictures of them, for Pete's sake! He isn't a deadbeat grandad, he found the only people, beyond the other ghostbusters, that he truly cared about in the world, and sacrificed his chance to be with them at their pivotal moments in order to keep them safe from a reality-destroying threat. And that's another reason why Egon is Omega-Based™.
