For those who are just starting out: If the watch you're planning to buy has a leather strap and bracelet option, get the bracelet. Aftermarket leather straps are plenty but a bracelet with fitting end links are usually a lot more expensive and tougher to source. You may think that you're not a bracelet guy but as you grow in this hobby your taste will change. I started out not liking metal bracelets and favoured leather straps a lot and now half of my watches in the watch box has a bracelet on.

@HFV_Junkyardin2 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the lowest quality. It’s just a cheater term. It just means that some portion of the material is Genuine Leather. So it can be full grain leather, but it can also be a thin layer of glued fibers on a synthetic backing.

Usually, top producers take great pride in telling you what exactly their type of leather is, where it was sourced from and how much work they put in processing it, etc. Of course, all that comes with a higher price tag.
@cionm7077 Жыл бұрын
@HFV_Junkyardin it pretty much does, if the seller has full grain or any other good leather item they will for sure let the customer know as they will charge more for it. Genuine leather is 99.99% of the time bottom of the barrel pig, scraps. The seller would be happy to tell you it is fullgrain if most of it was as that would come with a premium.

Also worth mentioning the "Marine Nationale" kind of nylon strap, the "Velcro strap" which is an effective and simple strap although not extremely refined, and the "Engineer" bracelet. Very well realized video, thanks for the content which is helpful especially for the beginner. The real advantage of Perlon is that the pin enters in "any" place in the strap, there is no need for prepared holes, this can make the strap more comfortable in those instances when, in a traditional nylon strap, a hole is too tight and the next hole is too loose. Many Perlon executions have a very fine grain and allow great freedom in inserting the pin.

straps are a rabbit hole just as much as watches. thanks for this thorough video Teddy. I personally love dive watches and on those type of watches, I find rubber to “dress” up and make the watch look more expensive. Tropic straps are also versatile and durable. Nato straps for a casual and more rugged look. And then there Erika’s original MN strap which makes it a mixture of casual, sporty, comfortable, durable, and versatile with various colors and stripes.

Great video Teddy! Watch straps come a long way. Back in the day manufacturers used lots of different leathers like shark, Buffalo, pig and other options. The 1980s made Speidel “Genuine Leather” straps were well made but now a days genuine leather isn’t quite good. I have tore apart one genuine leather strap to find lots of different materials inside. In my opinion it’s not leather. Anyways well done on the video.

Hi, Teddy. You missed mentioning the quick release pins. I've been prefering these lately, for obvious reasons. Another thing to be careful when buying a watch is to see if it has a common fit or a specific one, like the Oris you showed in the video. Some designed and exclusive bracelets can be difficult to find for replacement many years later, depending on the watch brand or the country you live in. Congratulations, man. You've created the ultimate watch strap guide. An exceptional video that worthy of being saved to favorites.

i just started getting into watches, had a few automatics, bought one that worked but needed cleaning so i took it down got it done and it cost me around 400 bucks just to be cleaned and serviced so i been sticking with quartz watches, i work outside most of the year so a leather strap just rots away in a few weeks a month or so metal pulls hair and pinches and the settings on them usually leave the strap to tight or to loose, so i have been putting nato straps on all the watches i have. usually ritchie or barton straps are what i buy, not to expensive and they don't rot, pinch or pull hair, the best i think is the ritchie brand straps because they are really soft feeling on my skin

Wow, comprehensive. Suggestion: video on signs of quality(?)...sealing at edges; stitching that continues through top and bottom layers etc...
@murph84113 жыл бұрын
Sealing at the edges is also done on cheap straps as the sealant they use is like acrylic paint and you can’t see the cut of leather used so easily then. Watch straps aren’t always more difficult to make than belts. I’d rather have a full grain leather strap made from one piece of leather than a strap made of multiple pieces sewn together, often with cheap leather or cardboard padding inside a very thin outer layer of leather. Some of the nicest straps I’ve made have been made from one piece of vegan leather just thinned down where it’s folded over and sewn to hold the buckle and spring bars or with a fairly thin piece of deer leather lined with very thin kangaroo skin.

I just picked up a dive watch (Casio Duro Marlin) and replaced the rubber strap with a "vintage Bond" type NATO band. I didn't like the extra third hold down, so I cut it off to turn the strap into a single pass through, with the buckle and loops, out of sight, under my wrist. I have a 7-5/8" wrist, so the watch fits well. (44mm case dia.)

Very helpful video for leather straps. I found that mesh stainless steel collects grime and gets very stinky and is hard to clean. I would not dive with a nylon strap because I would have to rinse and dry it. Rubber is OK, and I have used that on wrist dive computers, but for a dive watch I like mat black titanium as it is not shiny and does not corrode. To me, faux dive watches just seem to say that the wearer is clueless.

What are the ideal lengths of the parts of a leather watch strap? It seems that most sellers make the buckled portion of the strap at 75 mm . But at that length it places the buckle off-center on the wrist. And if someone has a larger wrist, then it would off-set even more.

Probably because those (called quick release) have an added failure point with the same quick release mechanism. I like them too but have been in situations where they've failed on me and the watch is half off my wrist. The traditional springs don't have that style problem unless the spring head is damaged upon insertion.
