Not having time for "private time" as the owner of any size business simply means that you don't prioritize private time for yourself. Which checks out considering the amount of times Linus has had burnout. Prioritizing private time for yourself has major health benefits and will ultimately help your business more than suffering through burnout every 3-6 months. It should be easy to set time aside for yourself when you have over a hundred employees, a CEO separate from yourself, and upper-management that SHOULD be able to handle themselves for 3-5 hours a week. I think the hard part is "shutting it off" when you do have that time to yourself. It's something I'm struggling to do myself so I get it.

@@slamkam07 The Quest 3 is absolutely incredible, but it doesn't cross the threshold as something I would use for that kind of productivity daily. Vision Pro isn't even quite there yet for me. People have different preferences for what they want in a device and what they will trade off, price, hardware, software, ect. There isn't a wrong answer for everyone, that is only a call you can make personally. All they did was express their feelings from their experience and that can't be invalid because it is entirely subjective and certainly doesn't make them blind.
@The-Rest-of-Us

The punch line is that the Vision Pro isn’t even competing with the Quest3. Meta will most certainly sell *more* units bc of the Vision Pro, bc it’s popularizing VR. Just like after the Apple Watch launched, analogue watch sales actually went *up*. So whatever side you’re on, if you like VR in general you should be thrilled about the Vision Pro existing. And Zuck knows this, he’s no dummy.

I honestly think Mark's review was actually pretty solid - especially considering he's the CEO haha. I'm a Vive owner and a Mac user (so VR user but in the Apple camp who also uses Windows) - I think the overall better system will be the Quest 3. It's more accessible and more usable for more people, so therefore (imho) the better overall product. Regardless, some of the hugely big productivity opportunities of Mac connected to Vision Pro are great, but a really niche use case. As a Mac user, I personally wouldn't use one this way even though I'm the target market.

To me it just didn’t sound confident. Obviously they’re confident in their product, but if they felt like they had to make this video to change the narrative about the quest 3 instead of running an ad campaign or something more subtle, then I can clearly see they’re probably running around reworking so much about the Quest because there’s just stuff Apple got right that they didn’t think of. Which is why competition is good and causes innovation! But the “market leader” doesn’t come out and talk about how good their product is compared to a new product that’s just not in the same price range. If it was so cut and dry, he wouldn’t have needed to make the video in the first place. I don’t see Tim Cook coming out and talking about the Galaxy Z Fold or Lisa Su talking about the 4080 Super, it just screams desperation.

The people who got first gen Apple Vision Pro are because they are a fan of Apple, Tim Cook, and/or the Steve Jobs legacy. People who buy and own a Meta Quest anything, could care less about Mark or the company, that's how solid of a product the Quest series is, whether it was Mark or someone people actually like, the Quest continues to win. People who straight up hate the CEO of Meta, will use a Meta Quest. That's how much better it is as a product and value.

The reason why you can't zoom in more on photos on the iPhone is because the iPhone takes HEIF pictures not JPEG and they have a bug/limitation on the gallery app that's linked to the file type. Meaning you can't zoom too much on HEIF pictures specifically because of an in app limitation. There are ways to solve this but Apple didn't bother fixing it. I had those same issues with HEIF pictures on Android while I was using third party photo gallery apps but those issues were fixed very fast after I've emailed the app developers.

@acslater017
@acslater017 10 ай бұрын
If it’s not for you, that’s perfectly understandable. But to claim there is “no use case” is just crazy. iCloud, Files, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Pages, Keynote, Numbers, FaceTime, SharePlay, Zoom, Teams, WebEx, Safari, keychain, Notes, Freeform, Photos, AppleTV, Apple Music. And, holdouts notwithstanding if there isn’t a visionOS optimized app you can fall back onto iOS which literally has 1 million apps. Among other things my AVP runs AirBNB, ESPN, Kaiser Permanente, Molekule, Fandango, News, Plex, Prime Video, Overcast, Signal, Shortcuts, Tesla, Speedtest, Voice Memos, X, you get the idea - the same apps and use cases people have been using iOS for for 15 years. (But now you can run them all full screen 1-10 feet tall each, in Yosemite Valley.) Set up an infinitely flexible mixed reality workspace with floating 2D apps, in your real space or in a nature environment conducive to focus. Watch movies (2D, 3D, Immersive 180) and feel like you have your own drive through theater or IMAX. View photos and spatial videos at art gallery size. Listen to spatial music without headphones. Do a gaming VR workout. Meditate in the virtual forest. Cook dinner with the recipe, timers, and instructional video floating in your kitchen. I’m not arguing that all of these are exclusive to AVP, just that AVP does have *many* use cases. Personally I’m loving mine. I understand it’s not for everyone, especially this 1st gen. But say it has no use cases is a failure of imagination.

the "niche of people" point Luke makes is something i feel a lot of people would strongly disagree with, like myself. As far as i understand it, theres absolutely nothing that the Vision Pro can do that the Quest 3 cant (except maybe better hand and location tracking, better screen, and one or two apps that practically no one would actually make use of), and that niche of people are mostly just going to be Apple diehards thinking they're investing in the future- which sure, they might be, but they're kind of late to the party considering other companies before Apple have been paving the path for years. I think Mark's review, although possible biased considering theres some competition to be had between his product and Apples, is extremely solid with some absolutely fantastic points, the biggest and most notable being the optional controllers, MUCH cheaper price, and much lighter weight, which is made even greater by the fact that the Quest 3 doesnt need a huge external battery while also lasting a slight amount longer on a full charge doing activities similar to the Vision Pro, and a similar 2 hours on actual gameplay load (which the vision pro isn't even capable of). Not to mention that the Quest 3 can do normal standalone VR too, and PCVR with a Link cable or wirelessly through wifi.

The best takeaway imo is that the Quest 3, which is fully capable of playing VR games at high fidelity (meeting the hardware standards of the gaming industry), for 10% of the price of the Vision Pro, whereas the Vision Pro HEAVILY focuses on their tracking and pass through for use cases in office work and entertainment at an absurdly high price

And it was made for my use case as far as i can tell, to use it for working in AR while not having multiple large displays in my immediate vicinity such as at a hotel. I still dont get why they wont allow it run MacOS apps when it has the same M series chip as their laptops. @bujin5455
@bujin5455 10 ай бұрын
@rpheus7281 This is going to be long, so I apologize, but I can't answer your question in a sound bite. One, I 100% solved the comfort issue, by adapting the BoboVR head strap to AVP, I can wear it for hours now, and forget it's there. Two, most of the things I want to do in "VR," I don't want controllers involved, like, at all. Controllers are in the way, you can't easily put them down, so you end up holding them the entire time, and it makes it difficult to interact with other objects, or just to be comfortable. I think the MQ3 is a great playstation, and a bad computer. I think the AVP is a much better computer, and that's what I'm after. Three, despite the Zuck saying the MQ3's hand tracking is just as good, it's really a terrible way to try to get anything done in the MQ3. It takes more work to use, and you get false activations on a moment by moment basis. Whereas with the AVP I almost never get a false activation, and the false activations I do get are usually less annoying than the ones I get in MQ3. Also, MQ3 with just hand tracking is far less powerful than the AVP's eye WITH hand tracking. Four, MQ3 has around 500 titles, as per Meta's own marketing. The AVP has over a million. Now, if you want to play games (which I largely don't), the MQ3 has more games, with a richer experience in general. But that brings us back to the MQ3 being a game system, which I almost never touch any of my game systems. The AVP on the other hand has ALL of my bank apps (the MQ3 does not), it has ebook readers (the MQ3 does not), it has comic readers (which the MQ3 does not), it has a properly functioning version of Plex (which the MQ3 really doesn't), not to mention a number of other productivity tools (Office, Note taking, etc), and communication tools (such as Teams), and the screens are good enough to use all of this stuff. Like I know these aren't "VR experiences" but in terms of using the AVP as an actual computing device, you either have the software you want to use, or you don't. I can do more things without having to take off the headset with the AVP than with the MQ3. Five, the AVP multitasks like a Mac, and the MQ3 doesn't really multitasks (it only kinda sorta pretends to). This is super useful because I can be enjoying my own space, doing whatever I want in that space, feeling like I'm somewhere else (which is a great feeling to have, but I don't have to drive or fly to accomplish it), and I can easily monitor the rest of my digital life while I'm doing whatever else I want to be doing, where ever I want to be doing it. Of course, this isn't much of a problem for the MQ3, because it really lack the sort of connectivity you might want anyway, because again, it only has about 500 apps, and most of those are games. Six, AVP's passthrough (PT) is miles and miles better than the MQ3's, and videos on YT doesn't really convey this. The MQ3's PT has huge breathing bubble distortions anytime it gets confused, which happens a LOT anytime you're moving at all, and these distortions are disorienting and nauseating. Not only that, the MQ3 has no flicker control, so while undulating bubbles ripple through your vision, you get to enjoy every LED light and monitor in sight flicker wildly, which is like the perfect cherry on top of the puke cake. Not only that, the perspective isn't perfect, things are not 100% where you think they are from the video feed. AVP on the other hand, though only marginally sharper, doesn't have geometric distortions, blocks out 99% of the flicker, and has perfect video object position mapping. I have thrown things into the garbage can across the room in the AVP, and I can't do that in the MQ3. All of this adds up to the AVP's PT, though not being perfect, being usable in a way the MQ3's simply isn't. This is important not just because of the interactions and applications truly working PT enables, but in the fact you don't have to take the headset off to interact with the world in a fluid and dynamic and COMFORTABLE sort of way. Seven, fidelity really does matter. Things in the AVP look real in a way they simply don't in other headsets, and things sound REAL too. The displays truly are impressive, and is a BIG part of the "magic" of AVP, but the audio is pure witchcraft. I've heard good audio in other headsets (the Index comes to mind), but Apple's ability to position the sound so that it absolutely 100% sounds like it's coming from anywhere in the 3D volume around you (above, below, in front, behind, and anywhere in between with laser clarity and exactness) is utterly unmatched. Not only that, but their ability to make that sound dynamically interact with your environment is mind blowing. You combine both the superlative visuals and the ultra real audio, and it brings us to the eighth point. Eight, presences. Apple has nailed this in a way no other VR solution has. Instead of projecting rendered avatars of your hands into the VR space, Apple actually rotoscopes your real hands into the scene. This small detail has a profound psychological effect, when you're sitting in Avengers HQ, watching a film over the NYC skyline, and you casually look down, and see your own REAL hands, there in the space with you, it's not the normal sort of VR suspended disbelief "presence" that VR normally provides. It's more like you're really truly there. Especially when coupled with the fidelity of the headset. Both in terms of the video but also, and JUST AS MUCH, the quality of Apple's spatial audio. You really do feel like you've been transported to another place, and this feeling is so real, that when I take the headset off, I get that feeling I get when I return home from a trip somewhere. So on like a deep psychological level, it delivers on that "traveling" experience. Which people pay SERIOUS money to do, and the AVP delivers it on demand, with no hassles of actual travel, for a fraction of the cost. Nine, it's like you have your own private little world that is yours to do whatever you want with, and which you know no one else has access to. If you're going to have a virtual space that's yours, you'd like to be able to lock the door, like you would to your house. Apple's inclusion of using your eyes to unlock your device adds to the feeling of privacy and intimacy. You know that whatever you do in your headset belongs to you. Sure, you can achieve this by entering a security pin, but that's a hassle, and it removes you from the feeling of the device being an extension of your own imagination. So in conclusion, to answer your question of what do I do? Whatever I want to do in "another place." I get the freedom to be wherever I want to be, doing whatever I want to do, all the while Apple gives me low key super powers. I don't have to play a game like I have them, I'm just able to effortlessly recreate my space to my liking using my eyes and fingers. Where I can be wherever reading emails if I want, or looking at panos (which is amazing), or browsing the web, or whatever I want to be doing, and I'm not giving up anything to do it, I'm still as connected or unconnected as I wish to be. All of this delivered in a way where AVP doesn't make any demands of me. And this is only just the beginning. The experience is already so good I'm always looking forward to jumping back in, but it's only going to get better as OS updates come out, and new software is added.

The things that the Apple Vision pro does, is something that is strickly locked behind software, which the quest 3 could easily switch and improve in terms of usability. The quest didn't really have a major update for software yet, which Meta has been talking about since 3 months ago - a large update coming soon. When this update drops, it might go well beyond apple or even match the UI and usability for a workspace, and on top of having better hardware for tracking , the quest will just straight up destroy it in essentially everything besides eye tracking or visuals on the screen.

Why would you be glad that Apple entered a market their users have no real interest in? Apple is/was never about gaming. They're trying things with the ARM SDK now, but it will take them time until they can be considered a decent gaming product. What they like to do, though, is to sell products as a business/productivity investment. And what happens when product becomes an investment? Price skyrockets. Just like real estate prices did when people started using them as investments. And as a result, we will see Meta, HTC and others try to incorporate productivity features into their former gaming headsets, which will drive the price even higher and shifting development focus onto more profitable business solutions. TL;DR: headsets will become more expensive, entertainment experience will see less innovations because of development focus shift, and VR will stagnate.

And that's not a good thing for an "emerging and fast evolving" niche, because it's just price-gating. Apple users don't care about that, as we already found out, but other people do. I don't think VR industry is mature enough to have a split into a business-focused (not enterprise) segment and entertainment-focused segment, and a result, it's gonna be "2-in-1" thing until it's mature enough and combining business and entertainment in one device is going to be expensive. Apple is the worst competitor to have, because if other brands have clientele, Apple has a cult. They can afford big mistakes.

@@iowawalker that's overthinking. Typically apple comes out with some already established industry feature and their normies act like they invented it. Besides that nonsense, their design language and actual innovations push things along. Again, the idea of another competitor somehow stunting the sector is illogical. We already have Hololens and Varo, etc. If anything, I expected better from Apple on this, but I'm not surprised it looks pretty and has shit ergonomics 😂. To sympathize with you, VR shifted towards standalone units (because having not needing a gaming PC was key to larger adoption) which FELT like it hurt the options (especially after the CV1 was so good). Then everyone shifted towards AR and more BS features. HMDs started getting bulkier or more compromised. Then poof, we get the Beyond which is basically a specialization. Ultra lightweight, direct tethered, not trying to be an everything device to market to the largest demographic. That's okay. The mass adoption of VR that was promised was never going to happen. Hell as a former mechanic I can tell you Hololens is NOWHERE near having their AR repair assistant figured out. Nobody likes putting a thing on their face and nobody likes something the works "most of the time" VR/AR is a LOT like vaporware venture capitalism, selling ideas and nonsense. Which unlike crypto, etc this sector actually has engineers trying all sorts of shit. The more the merrier.

am i the only one who thinks the apple one is primarily for military special ops and is priced so high to make the US government spend more on them? Imagine having a device that responsive and able to display realtime locations of your comrades and enemy with detailed instruction and command and i'm pretty sure the apple one is perfect for it, and it's not like big tech companies haven't made shit for militaries in the past...

I could imagine it being useful if the m2 chip in it let it fully replace a macbook, which ultimately enabled having multiple screens by not needing to cast them

Yeah, instead, they decided AVP was just an iPad pro for your face. Needs a few years of XR software work and a like $1500 removed

I didn’t buy the first iPhone either but I’m just glad Apple has begun the process of developing this platform. I’d prefer this to them releasing a better headset in two years and then still having the software being in the infant stage

I highly doubt the working in it, and productivity thing. How is it better then mouse and kbm, or a drawing tablet, or anything else.
How Is This Possible??
