It has been six months since assembling my Norwood LM29 sawmill. I thought this would be a great time to do a comprehensive point by point discussion of what I like about the mill and what I don't like about the mill. This video is a little longer but it really dives deep into the steps as I show the milling of one log in detail.

You can't go wrong with the command Pro engine we had one on our first sawmill bought in 1999 just replaced it last year because it finally gave up the ghost. Almost 20 years of fault free service and well over a million board feet of lumber. After seeing your videos and reviews on the NORWOOD mill we are considering it as our next mill,

On your small dog that doesn't stay in place, take a spring and attach to the end of lever handle . Fashion a hook to the spring to pull down to your bar to keep it from popping up from the vibration.

Here are my comments after 8000 boardfeet of lumber on my LM29: I apologize for the long text... - I purchased thicker blades, .0042 instead of the .0035, they last longer and wave much less on knots when sharpness start to fade - You WILL hit log rests with blades, ruining a few. Wonder why these are not made of aluminium (or hard maple ;-)! ) will replace mine with alu and wood (would have saves two blades so far :-( - too many sharp edges on the mill, for instance the stops for the carriage, they are painful to hit with your legs when walking around the mill (you do this a lot) - parts punched out needs to have rounded edges - a bicycle bottle holder is very useful when it's hot (screw it on the carriage to have water at your disposal, this is physical work!) - I made a winch with a Harbor freight ATV 3500 winch sitting on top of a post attached to the frame - saved lots of $$$. I use my truck 12v to power it with booster cables, very very efficient! I made ramps with 1 1/2 tubing but they should be 2 inches for strength in supporting larger logs (they curved and will need to be replaced) - the handle on the screw on the log dog gets in the way (doesn't clear the carriage) all the time when sawing larger logs to the limit of the capacity of the mill, even preventing from using it - it really should be simply a bolt so we can use a battery powered drill to screw/unscrew, would be much faster especially that the pitch on that screw is ridiculously small (25-30 rotations to fully screw/unscrew!!!) - I will correct this shortly - the post that holds the cam dog is too short and the loose make this dog to constantly drops and stop holding the cant while sawing (after one or two passes) - I drilled a hole in it and drove a metal screw to stop it from moving back and forth. That metal screw helped a lot but the cam dog still fails to hold the log from time to time. This device needs to be improved. It is also too close for comfort when sawing the last 1 inch board, one 8th of an inch lower would be safer (I hit it lightly with a blade, enough so that it needed be resharpened) - you really need the automatic water lubrification, you save a ton of water this way, great accessory - a second handle left of the one on the mill would be great, some wood (like cedar) needs a good push as they dull blades very fast and also because you need to lean over to check those %?&?%$%?& logs rest to make sure they will clear the blade - Have a level when setting up, very easy after a few times. Overall, the LM29 is an awesome mill of great value. I simply love it and would buy it again without hesitation. It is a lot of work to assemble so try to have someone to help :-) ! I resharpen my blades every second time using a HF chain saw sharpener, convenient for me (distance to sharpening service) when I am running short on blades (and I save a few bucks there also). Takes roughly 30 minutes to do a blade while enjoying a coffee in the shop ;-) Thanks Red tools for these awesome videos, they are very much appreciated!!!

Great video . Never worry about the length of you videos. Longer is always better . Norwood is only 2 hrs away from me in Canada . I remember watching your other Norwood video in how you got the extra axel . Yes in Canada our gas cans have vents . What a stupid rule you have there . You're gonna expose more fuel in spilling it than what you would if you had a vent . I use the NO-SPILL gas cans which I get from the States . The nozzle has the vent in it and you only need to push the button for the fuel to come out . They are kind of pricey but well worth the money . Most of the time I don't even use a funnel when using the gas can . I have been using them for years now with no problems . Get them in 5gal , 2 1/2 gal or 1 gal size .

I'd trade you in a heart beat, every year here is colder and colder It finally broke 0 last few days. After -40 freezing cold month after month, looking forward to our 3 months of summer if it doesn't rain everyday. In a week or 2 the snow will finally be melted, (If it doesn't snow again) and maybe we can enjoy outdoors if the fricken wind decides not to BLOW. I was seriously interested in a bandsaw mill however we only have a few wood species where I am, popular/pine/ spruce, we don;t have any exotic's like you have... Seriously like your mill, and wish you the best.

Great video. I know it’s been here a while and this might already been stated but if you take something like a cheap level and then attach short pieces of something else, like pieces of another cheap level, to each end, designed to just reach across both pulleys, you will be able to align the pulleys with it. Just a thought.

If you take a look at "Smoky Mountain Outpost", he has the same mill with a deflector taped onto the sawdust vent. His sawdust stacks straight down. I don't know if he has cleaned out the outlet but with a permanent modification fitted, it would be a good idea.

On the quick lock device, if the lip that engages when you push the handle down was about 1/8" to 3/16" longer, it would engage more and force the point into the wood more. Have they made changes to that since you produced this video? Another change I would suggest is to cut some holes in the bottom of the right side cover just a couple of inches from the existing sawdust exhaust ports so the sawdust can blow out beneath and on the side without blowing down onto the rail.

You can buy polyurethane bushings that are split. Measure the diameter of the attachment point of that small dog to the pipe. Place that bushing in the end of it. It will slide easily until in a bind. Then it will hold it. The vibration combined with the slick surfaces is what is causing it to release

Check out Smoky Mountain Outpost, he has the same mill. He put a down drop on the end of his shute. Never said if he cut out the webbing, but my guess is he did. For the wheel alignment make a template from a 1x that hits both sides of the each wheel and then is cut out to go past your center obstructions. hopefully that will work.

Troy, terrific video. I'm curios about how much the blades cost you. I'm sure the blade longevity depend on a number of things like what kind of wood you're cutting, how fast you push the blade, etc. I really enjoy your channel.

Troy, easy fix for keeping mill stationary is to use some old vise grips on the track in front of roller post, 2nd idea is use old 4" C clamp in same maner. I run a lumbermate 2000 & i have used this method to stop wind from pushing the mill down open track.

I have the HD36 and share your feelings and experience. Decent mill but can be improved. My instruction manual was also out of date and the time/frustration didn't leave a good first impression. I think they offload too much assembly (that wouldn't affect shipment size) to the customer. The track pieces are too short and size/gauge vary too much which affects the smoothness of the carriage. I cut out the center of the covers so I could align the wheels. The HD36 ceramic blade guides allow more blade travel than guide wheels that have downward pressure. I do like the HD36 dog system.
@keithmartin7831
@keithmartin7831 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said. I despise the ceramic guides. Blade travel or variance is something I can't afford with fair but demanding customers. I also think they made a Lot of the pieces short to save on shipping but makes for more trouble assembling and not as strong an overall mill in my opinion. The Koehler is a good engine I've got or had several. The big thing against Koehler is there parts must be made of gold the way they price them.

if you ever get to comment on the leveling of the blade with the frame and when lifting carriage from lowest position (0 tension on lifting) , the winch mechanism bends the whole carriage which dis inline the level of the blade , so you're actually having your blade plunging already when sawing can cause waviness.

Quicker to blow it out with compressed air or a leaf blower. That’s a gnarly cut. Would work gloves 🧤 have helped? Use some a straight edge board to check the parallelism of the wheels? Do you need the working blade to check alignment if so could you stick some tape over the teeth on a dull blade.

If you have not solved your RPM while cutting issue... You are RIGHT! The governor is “supposed” to pick up the load as the actual cutting begins. You should not have to manually run the throttle up and down each cut! Look up (google) “Adjusting governor on Kohler Xxx. If you have a $15 box of 50 assorted springs from Amazon, you might try changing out the spring to a LIGHTER SPRING. As it sits now...the gov spring holds the throttle wide open against the stop. (If you can push away from the spring by the gov Rod, you should hear it slow down. Think of a pressure washer for a moment. You do not touch it, right. Has a steady fast speed it runs at (like 3,300 rpm, -ready then- to pick up the load via the governor. You need this much rpm to start with, so that as you pull open the wand handle, it must quickly bring the power up. WATCH as you pull the handle on and off, you will see the governor working by watching the linkage. A simple stretch of the gov spring -just slightly- may ease the tension, and allow rpms to adjust better. Still under warranty, do not touch this. Your clogging with sawdust issue... on the -bottom- below the side exit holes, make a couple holes maybe 3” (that do NOT fit a hand passing through). Nothing better than gravity on your side, and blowing out toward the ground. I hope to get a mill like yours. I hope some of this helps. 😬😬😬 Stay Safe, NEVER CUT when you are tired or just don’t feel well. We ALL make mistakes, being ALERT cuts out 95% of the accidents. Good Luck and Thank You for the video’s.

I just ordered a Norwood for the exact reason you are questioning. I have a really old barn sided in white oak. Recent repairs used the last of the rough cut white oak we had on hand. Upon checking with the few local mills there are, I can buy the mill for less than a couple large loads of 14' white oak. Having more than several large white oaks on the property, it works out cheapest to buy the mill and make my own lumber. The cost and hassle to transport the logs to another mill would rival the cost and hassle of buying the mill and doing it myself, but I have other projects in mind. It will pay for itself easily.

It looks like there is way too much water being used to lube the blade. I could see it running off of the opposite side of the sawdust end. This will also cause the sawdust port to clog from soaked sawdust. It is supposed to be sawdust and not sawmud. Maybe add a valve to slow the drip rate. Looks like it cuts good otherwise.

Wouldn’t it be possible to add a sight port on your covers on both wheels so you could see the tracking as the blade is moving safely. This would allow you to adjust the wheels to optimize the blade position on the wheels. This could be done each time you change blades. You should be able to avoid the blade jumping off your wheels by doing this. I am thinking you would only need a small view port on the covers.

Something I wonder about is wouldn't it pay to get the debarker. I would think the blades would last enough longer and pay for it self in the time of replacing blades and the sharpening. Can't always have clean logs. Could you ad a weight to the end of the cam handle (on the log holder) to make it stay down better?

If it were me, I'd probably cut that dust chute right off the guard altogether. It would be easier to deal with if you get rid of that useless choke-point. Forget about just cutting the end-cap out. It would make more sense to start at the middle of the top chute radius and cut 45 degrees inwards towards the bottom. The fact that you haven't done it already boggles my mind lol. If you're not gonna be one of those morons that sticks their digits in there, there's literally no reason for it to be there.

You aren't using the cam dog correctly, push in on the collar on the cross pipe while insuring the side to side movement of said pipe is removed with the same hand, the pull the dog pick together with the cam handle , the while holding the two pieces together push the dog firmly into the cant. what I do now is while pushing the collar inwards I use the cam lever handle to further push the dog into the wood before caming the handle down to hold the cant secure. I think if you use it this way that you will change your mind about this invaluable tool, especially on small cants. I hope this helps, thanks for your great vidoes!

YOu are right. I figured it out after shooting this video. It works pretty well now. Norwood suggested shimming the cross pipe to take out every bit of play.

@@RedToolHouse That's great! I even cant it to the side and can cut right down to 3/4 inch on my LM29 ,and yes shimming the pipe will help for sure.

I am about 85% of the way through assembling an LM30. It has taken me about 6 days so far working on it most of the day. I will just say that it is a lot harder than it should be. The directions leave a bit to be desired. Instruction can be confusing, parts not in boxes or bags as marked, missing pieces, not the highest quality hardware. Videos online do help, but not a lot. If you buy this mill, I suggest blocking out a week or so to put it together, put on your detective hat, and take your time. Read the directions and then watch a video if you can, especially if something doesn't make sense. If put together right, it seems to be a good mill.

They took our money but never sent us our mill. Not cool. Right now I'm out over $3,000.00. They will not return our calls. We may have to go to the attorney General. Feel lucky if you got yours.

Sounds like something an auto engineer would say😁😁 Does he have tiny hands? I have always imagined anyone responsible for designing engine placement and accessories under the hood of the car must have very small hands. Also, ask him why the only exhaust manifold stud the breaks off is the one in the very back under the fire wall? 😁😁
Can my Norwood LM29 mill a log this big?
