Little correction about the thinking themes you mention at 16:13 In the case of the partner themes, it switches to the thinking variation (with lowered main melody) during the tutorial part of the event, but idling during the non-tutorial cutscene will not change the music. For battle themes, it will only switch to the thinking variation if you enter a submenu and then don't attack right away (~5 seconds), as a way to dim the music to let you think about your next move. If you idle at the beginning of the turn without entering in a submenu, the battle theme will not fade into its thinking variation. And I would also say that it's amazing that the music calms down when you're panic-scrolling around the different options you have because you don't know what to do in a very tough battle.

Yeah, the "thinking" themes for the Partners are called "Primers" in the game's Sound Test, if memory serves.

Banger video, I’m already looking forward to part 2! It’s definitely interesting to hear your takes as someone who grew up with the original version of TTYD since while I did own it for a bit as a kid, I never even beat chapter 1, so the remake is my main exposure to TTYD since I actually beat it this time, lol. I’d say that I ultimately prefer the remake OST overall by a large margin partially because it’s what I’m more familiar with and because of how much more vibrant and full it sounds to me with the live instruments, but I can see where you’re generally coming from when you prefer a song from the original OST over the remake. I also appreciate the sheer thoroughness of this analysis as a whole. Even as someone who beat the remake first, it’s still sometimes surprising to see just how much new music they added, and I honestly didn’t realize the new leitmotif they really emphasized in the new soundtrack, so it’s fun to see just how prolific it is in the remake OST.
@TicTacToeCraft2 күн бұрын
The TTYD leitmotif isn't as "in-your-face" and prevalent as the Origami King leitmotif.

55:11 I made it into the video!!! (somewhat) I'm almost completely certain that he was talking about the leitmotif from the TTYD remake and thought it originated in TOK instead of the original TTYD, where it actually appeared. That must be where the confusion comes from.

I'm so happy to have such an in depth review/analysis of this soundtrack. Personally I saw so many people who just played with the original music on once they had the chance. Which, if you want to relive some old memories I get it, but generally it's sad to see because the new music offers so much to me. I really love it, pretty much all the problems I do have come down to some instruments they use and the loudness of them. Also to answer your question if anyone even wants to hear about the breakdown of the battle themes, hell yes. I absolutely loved hearing you talk about that stuff
@StarBittys2 күн бұрын
35:56 Missed a TTYD Motif in Petalburg! It appears the same way that it later does in Koops's theme, with the neighbor tone rather than the held first note. 54:43 Even better, it's not even the first time *Mario* has used that specific pattern, but you don't see people claiming that Color Splash's battle music is a reference to Delfino Plaza. People just want to connect whatever dots they can find, I guess. 1:09:13 I can't help but wonder if that specific arpeggio is meant to call forward to the X-Naut Base theme. Might be coincidence, might be foreshadowing, who knows? 1:27:43 I'll agree that the Great Tree isn't especially standout on its own, but it *does* do a massive part in conveying that the chapter is one big Pikmin homage. (Punies On The Move also really leans into the Pikmin vibes in a different way.) 2:11:19 This one specifically gave me the feeling like I was on an actual time limit, like the developers hid an actual timer in the code that would give you a Game Over if you weren't fast enough, like the time bomb in the chapter before. IIRC, the original GCN version just played Seven Wonders Of The Glitz Pit again, and the new track really helped freshen up the experience since I already knew what was going on. Like, it went from "huh??? what's going on???" to "oh god i remember this hurry hurry hurry" ...anyway, looking forward to Part 2!

@PhantomV13Күн бұрын
I've similar feelings for Rogueport. I suppose the intensity is meant to be balanced by the existence of the shop variation, hence upping the intensity for the general area. I love that the arrangements are, to varying degrees, new takes rather than re-orchestrations etc, and having a fresh new feel. It's more creative and means the originals aren't just outclassed, but another version for Rogueport as you say, or for the Pit battles (like an 'underground' remix), would be perfect. The addition to the Magnus battle sounds piratey, which really fits the ship battle, so I wonder if that came first and became toned down for the robot fight.
@cloud9979Күн бұрын
For the battle master theme, I’d argue there’s a small section leading into the loop that more closely echoes the Autumn Mountain theme’s looping section moreso than the main section itself.

Something I say to new ttyd players is to keep the og music badge on for most of the game, but turn off right before chapter 4 and turn it back on right after chapter 5. Imo this is the best way to experience the good of the og soundtrack while still experiencing some of the best remixes the remake has to offer I’m glad you made this video honestly. I have so many opinions on the new soundtrack that it’s nice to hear someone’s thorough thoughts on it as well. Thank you for putting in the long time and hard work that went into making this!

11:14 "Rogueport's theme is one of the most iconic in the series, so this is an important one." Moments later: 11:57 "Not every song has to be a show-stopper. (...) This is the main hub, settle down a bit!" Like, I get your point, but the wording was just a bit funky. Also, as someone with no real nostalgic attachment to the original, I can say that the new theme is my preferred version.
@MadJohn-w7e2 күн бұрын
It's a great song, but in game it definitely feels a bit over the top, at least in my opinion
@TicTacToeCraft2 күн бұрын
I get your point, but a theme can be iconic and important without being overbearing. Good examples are Zelda's Lullaby from ALttP, Dire Dire Docks from SM64, Aquatic Ambience/Stickerbush Symphony, and C418's work in Minecraft. Also, he pointed out that thematically it doesn't make much sense for Rogueport's theme to be so triumphant and celebratory, especially upon arrival. Honestly, I expected a similar approach to TOK's Toad Town or Color Splash's overworld theme, where the music becomes progressively upbeat with each cleared chapter, but I guess Rogueport doesn't change as much as Toad Town, so it wouldn't make much sense.
@MattTOB6182 күн бұрын
The remake was my first time playing this game that I'd heard _so much_ praise for, and the Rogueport theme, to me, really set the mood for "Yup, they were right, this is gonna be amazing" _perfectly._ Like he said, this is one of the most iconic themes of the series, and an important one as well. It makes sense that they'd want to show right away that they can make a great rendition of the theme, and leave a good first impression to anyone going in with scepticism. Regardless, it wasn't the actual opinion I had an issue with; I get that it can be a bit over-the-top. I just found the wording to be somewhat funky. "This is an important theme" and "it's not _that_ big of a deal" seems kinda contradictory on the surface, which is what I was trying to point out with my comment. Granted, I also could've worded _my_ opinion better; we're all human, after all (well, he's a mole and I'm a Changeling, but still).
@TicTacToeCraft2 күн бұрын
@MattTOB618 I understand and respect your opinion that Rogueport in the remake is supposed to be a show-off to leave the player with a good first impression, but that doesn't change my opinion that it sounds too much like a Smash remix (moreso than the actual one) that thematically doesn't _really_ work with the setting your in. Then again, that doesn't change the fact that this rendition sounds great, tho.
