Actually I use the neoprene one with the plastic clip and nylon loop and it’s great. You don’t have to remove the peg you actually pull the whole loop behind the peg and then pull the plastic clip through the loop and its on. They are very comfortable for heavier banjos also.

I made a banjo strap from a length of one-inch webbing that was originally a dog leash. I had to do some cutting and sewing to make it work--a bakelite "Paramount" banjo--same as a Harmony of that vintage.

Thanks for this. I'll go out looking for a leather strap and Chicago screws! Used to have a strap with plastic hooks and they damaged the lovely wood of the banjo, so I won't use those again.

Thank you! My grandfather passed about a month ago and I got his banjo. An old 5 string Sovereign resonator banjo it's surprisingly still in tune despite not being played in over 40 years, I ordered some strings but being a mandolinist and guitarist was so confused at the types of straps. It's not worth anything money wise but it's worth a lot to me because it was his. It's not of an insignificant weight, and my back and joints are bad, so while I can sit classical style with it I wanted to get a strap and this was fantastically helpful. I've never played, hell I've never held, a 5 string banjo before 3 days ago so here we go down this rabbit hole.

I'm going down the same rabbit hole! After years of playing other stringed instruments with a group of old time banjo players, I fell in love with one and bought it. Now having to relearn EVERYTHING! The right hand, in particular, is so different from the way guitars etc are played that I'm having to start from scratch. A bit daunting... after 50 years of the right thumb leading, it now has to learn to follow! And the fingers to hammer not pick! But I love the sound. Hope you're enjoying your learning journey as much as I am.

Hey buddy, good video. The strap on your Sierra, we call a cradle strap. They're the only strap I'd use but we fit them differently than you. We feed both side through the pot clamps from about the same position as you but both tongues overlap by 1 or 2 tongue holes and then we tie a boot string through the two holes to secure it. You could also use a button screw like you do instead of the boot string. I actually got a tannier to make me a bright red leather one for my deering zombie killer.

Man I really appreciate this video. Banjo straps are really confusing honestly. I have a recording king and mistakenly bought a cradle strap for it as it won’t fit behind the metal bars. Hopefully I can attach a clip to it and get it to work that way.

Hi Sandy, I think this now has to be the 'Go To' video for banjo strap info, well covered and explained. I was also going to mention what @Stephen Reinheimer commented on about the looped ends, as I believe they have a quick release to allow the loop to be removed from the strap, and attached to the peg by by going around it & back through itself. Great video !
@BanjoAddict

Hi Banjo Addict. Love your content, mistakes and all! Regarding those straps that have loops on the end, you don’t have to remove any hardware to attach them. Have a look at the Banjo Ben “strap” video and go to the 11 minute mark. You remove the end loops by unsnapping the clasp, then for each end, push the loop under the hook you want and put the clasp end through the loop. Now reattach the main body of the strap and you’re done.

I have a deering nylon strap with the Chicago screws on my beginner banjo I've had for a year now. I'm fortunate enough to live 45 minutes from Geoff Hohwalds Banjo Warehouse and Saturday I've got an appointment to check out lots banjos and hopefully get my NEW ONE!! . Good tip with not using the clips if they come on your banjo, one of mine unthreaded from the banjo causing it to tip onto the headstock and chip. Hard lesson learned. Also that unfinished-style wood on your banjo looks beautiful!
@chrisholladay
@chrisholladay Жыл бұрын
Also side note with the closed loop one: you can unclip one end, thread it back through itself to make a simple fist knot around the hook, then clip that back into your strap, but from my experience the clips are a huge point of failure, and can come undone with some force.

I have that same leather strap on an older Sierra, and it's supposed to go all the way around the pot and connect back to itself. My Sierra is set up as what may be the most awesome baritone banjo ever. But it's heavy. Now those hooks are securing 90 psi of tension on the head, and that banjo weighs in around 15 to 18 pounds. So I don't want any extra tension on any of the hooks. The wholes match up perfectly because it's meant to bottom wrap the pot. Take care hillbilly.
