I am a University music lecturer,a bass player ,and a huge follower of Allan Holdsworth ,all for over 35 yrs.I specialise in progressive English music. I have to say.. I have NEVER ever come across such a profoundly well-researched,well-executed,insightful, deep,and complete piece of a analysis of any music! I think it is just such a stunning scholarly achievement. And so so USEFUL! And you are excellent with the presentation and delivery of your work too. The sheer amount of work you have done just to collate and analysis all the music... and then you draw so many insightful conclusions. And the huge continual but highly organised display of notated examples is..genuinely AMAZING it is all just stunning work THANKYOU so much!!!!!!

Could you explain what Progressive English music is? I have not checked out the video yet but what high praise.
@marcuscornall Жыл бұрын
@@thesting6820 hello and I will try! But.. Disclaimer : the following is just my personal opinion! -There are no set 'rules' about this of course..and I don't mean to put stuff in rigid boxes. First of all..the praise is for the scholarship and work done by the maker of the video.i truly think it the finest single work of analysis I have ever looked upon,and I have looked on many. As for Progressive English music...I would describe it as music featuring electric guitars and basses ( usually with drums,and often with other non electric instruments) which.. erm..progresses in that it goes beyond the obvious rock/pop uses of the electric instruments ,and takes them into 'grown up' territories of expression..using chord progressions,rhythms,structures,forms,and harmonic landscapes that are beyond the obvious /diatonic things guitars were originally called upon to do. In other words..'grown up ' electric guitar music.. what happened to it when the instrument was taken seriously as an advanced tool of expression.The English bit ..I feel there is a distinct strain of 'prog' which has it's roots in the music of England ,and which isn't particularly influenced by Jazz or other New World styles, although they're in there somewhere .There is of course a long long history of English/European music ,(which exiated before 'jazz ' ) often highly improvised,that doesn't 'count' as 'proper music ' (by the people who decide these things ) because it features lowly 'folk'/commoners' instruments,and what is done outside of the rarified 'classical world doesn't count and isn't taken seriously for its growth beyond their perceptions of the electric guitar as a rowdy rock and roll machine ( not that there's anything wrong with that either) So for me 'prog is grownup electric music, and the English bit is just the distinct area of that which grew here in England. And i hope that helps!
@thesting6820 Жыл бұрын
@@marcuscornall Thanks for that explanation. I appreciate the effort. Sounds like you are describing progressive rock. Yes is king of this realm. But, others include Genesis and its offshoots and King Crimson. Rush and Pink Floyd may be included. These bands influenced the following: Tool, Dream Theatre, and many more. I’m still not familiar with the English folk music. But, I do know many European folk music traditions which do not count as “art”, and so are not seriously considered. Jazz is not seriously considered as art by the standards of classical music. In my opinion, it is Jazz’s obsession with the groove that limits its efforts to create art. Miles Davis tried, and so did Chick and others, as well as Fusion. Anyhow, thanks for the answer.
@marcuscornall Жыл бұрын
@@thesting6820 thanks! I did my best. Well yes,sort of 'Prog Rock', and it is very hard to define it simply. Phil Miller, John Etheridge, Soft Machine, In Cahoots, Gong,Camel,Focus,Gentle Giant should also be mentioned. I dont use the term 'prog rock' though because it has too much baggage attached to it ( by music journalists who are derisive and do not understand it.) I worked in academia for yrs. English music colleges were only just beginning to recognise electric instruments' existence, but they were percieved as pop instruments incapable of serious musical output. Yrs later when I taught in those places, the attitude was still the same. The 'serious' musical establishment did not and still does not want to admit electric guitars as a serious instrument,sadly. Same with the saxophone. So they won't let Jazz or prog ever have full status, because they regard it as low art forms.Yes I think it having a groove counts against it,but its a deeper prejudice than that. I may go to my grave still trying to make the point to them that on hearing Holdsworth, you HAVE to acknowledge this thing is not just teenage rock and roll any more! It grew up and is now capable of anything! Take it seriously,and the people who play it!

So much of KZbin these days is clickbait-y videos called like "5 WILD Pentatonic Licks You HAVE to Know," with reminders to like and comment and share. And I get that people have to do that to make a living, I do. I'm not criticizing them. But something like this-hundreds of transcriptions, five and a half hours of analysis and instruction, completely free for anyone to watch-this is what the internet is all about, to me. A true labor of love. I'm not exaggerating when I say this is beautiful. I'm glad people like you still exist, and I'm glad people still make videos like this.

Thank you! TBH I'm never a big fan of click bait stuff, reaction videos etc. I know it gets attention and it actually works. My issue was, how can I get people to understand the amount of work I put into this, just with the picture? So the pic I used is about as clickbaity as it gets, but all of those numbers are 100% accurate to what is in the video.

8 years ago I was going for the first FC of A Slight Amplification on Rock Band 3 and wondering how the band wasn't bigger, and now I've found you again as someone deeply in love with Allan's playing. Amazing to see what you've been up to, and thank you for your service

Ha! Well thank you for that! I forget we did that RB thing and wondered if there were any other cross over's from RB to some of this stuff. This is certainly a first! Thanks for watching and if you're interested we have newer material on the channel! PS We played Slight Amp for the first time live in like 12 years a few months ago for fun haha.

This is a truly monumental work. Huge contribution to not only guitarists but the entire music community. It’s one of the best tributes to Alan Holdsworth that I’ve ever seen. Thank you!! Being “stubborn and crazy “ can definitely be assets…

Really fantastic video. I’m about 2 hours in, and I already want to go back and rewatch everything I’ve seen thus far. You have done a great job making this giant of a musician somewhat approachable in regards to really looking under the hood of what he was doing. I can’t imagine how much work you put into this. Just great, thanks for doing this!

Thanks for pointing out Allan's 4 note per string scales being somewhat chromatic, and NOT like the one he shows in the instructional video. I encountered the exact chromatics that you showed while doing my transcriptions of Allan's solos. With those unveilings I added and practiced those sequences to my diatonic scales and can instantly through them in anywhere and become somewhat Holdsworthian sounding. And as you said, I've never seen him use that REH 4 note per string sequence. Again, thanks for bringing this up and confirming it for me! And sincere thanks for all the work you've done for our community!

Lynch really borrowed that pinky slide...a lot!
@TurrigenousOfficial2 жыл бұрын
@@jfo3000 Thank you! To be honest, I was almost disappointed in a way because I was hoping to find something really interesting in that respect. But what was even better was I already KNEW the shapes Allan was doing, I just had to use them in a different way. So I was instantly able to improve, instead of having to learn and work on something I wasn't familiar with already.

Dude this is awesome! I’m a classical guitarist for a living and I’ve been trying to really get into improvising and I’ve been obsessed with Allan Holdsworth and Pat Metheny. I’ve gotten a bit of understanding down for Metheny but I found it pretty tough to approach Holdsworth’s ideas and methods. This video is perfect for me!

From a massive Allan fan, I cannot thank you enough for your work, your dedication and devotion to the genius and once in a millennia gift to humanity that was Allan and his connection to creative flow, primordial vibration, sound and music. Videos like this and folks like you make the healing process of losing him slightly more medicated. Of course bitter sweet, as he is no longer here to see just how loved & respected he was, but indeed, from beyond the temporal realm he is surely smiling at you and this incredible body of work and reflections of his genius! Saluting you my brother, blessings, ZM
