After dealing with sinusitis, Barabara Schmidt had endoscopic sinus surgery. As time went on, Schmidt developed more frequent sinus infections, leading her to have a second sinus surgery. After the second surgery, she had trouble breathing. Schmidt was diagnosed with empty nose syndrome, a condition that creates a sensation of being unable to breathe. Megyn Kelly is joined by Barbara Schmidt, as well as otolaryngologist, Dr. Subinoy Das.

This condition really needs a more serious name. There is nothing silly about breathing problems. Anyone with half a brain could figure that out. These people have sinus burning, cold painful air in their lungs, facial pain, and suffocation. Imagine suffocating and not being able to do anything about it.

I was thinking about this surgery but I gave up after watch this experience. My cure was sea water in Spray (sea water in Spray I bought it in the pharmacy) for two month just before sleeping in both nostrils every night, this was my nasal allergies or swollen turbinate CURE, You can also boiled water with sea salt without iodine

This condition is so underrated. I also have it and it's horrid. This worst part is that everyone thinks that you have just another nose problem, like a runny nose, or whatever, and to them it doesn't seem like a big deal, they think you are exaggerating your symptoms.

Hi, I know you're going through a hard time and I understand that this might feel unwanted, but PLEASE, pray to God for a miracle healing of your situation. someone told me to do the same thing. I tried it, I prayed and prayed and prayed for 3 nights and on the 3rd night, I am FREE of this. I am praying for everyone in this comment section and I truly believe, if you believe in your heart that God loves you and will save you, he will free you of this. Very true. Ent community thinks breathing is just sucking in air and that's it. It is network of complex organ systems, sensory nerves, receptors working in unison. ENTs governing bodies should be ashamed and ousted for continuing to promote these useless and dangerous procedures. No matter how "minimally invasive." It's ruined and taken many Iives.

And if I don’t do the septum turbinate surgery with all my fears, the other side of the spectrum is a lifetime filled with no restful sleep, major headaches and low oxygen levels, and sensations of not being able to breathe in and my body being OK with till my brain says wake up. ⁠⁠@@whatnowok i just had my septoplasty yesterday as well as turbinate reduction and a tonsillectomy 😅 i have the same symptoms as you, i cant breathe already so I decided to do the surgeries. Hoping post-op goes well, I’m not in too much pain right now, mostly just uncomfortable really. I think the most important thing to consider if you want to do this is who your doctor is, a bad surgeon could mess u up.

Empty nose syndrome ruins lives. Most ear nose and throat specialists have no idea how important the turbinates are to a persons health and nervous system. Any surgery to the turbinates can cause Ens!

You are correct. What is astonishing are the number of ENT videos marketing these procedures that do not treat the root cause of nasal problems. It's all just another surgical scam. Many Ens victims have been misled into surgery not needing reductions or septoplasties to begin with.

For anyone contemplating turbinectomy I would advise against. Had surgery left & right turbinectomy - removed 85% of tissue and septoplasty at 11 then second surgery at 15. Now 52 I have suffered hellish condition related to breathing ever since: dry nose, plug of mucous 20mm diameter that I choke on each morning. endless sinus infection through 20 & 30's treated with endless antibiotics, daily migraine like headache, inexplicable neck pain, cervical disc damage from holding my head in position to breathe while sleeping, insane dreams where I am dying of thirst but cannot open water bottle, broken sleep... I have learnt to settle my self like putting a new born child to bed, gastro issues from disrupted breathing. I have had numerous other symptoms for years and felt gas lit by GP's & surgeons. They look up my nose and marvel at how open the passages are and how well the scar tissue has healed. I could create a 3D model of inside my head and sinuses from feel exactly where the scar tissue is. I live with permanent pressure in my sinus as though a inch wide steel band in pressed across my nose and upper cheeks. In my late teens and early 20's I felt as though everyone could see this and that my nose was so full stuff would fall out but its empty. I was super active sport wise up to 14 then felt the burn in sinuses and permanently exhausted although plenty of energy. ENS is a paradox. I only came across ENS as description to fit my symptoms I have described to medicos for decades. Although I have learnt to live with this condition it worsens as I age. I;ve come to understand that I am not a stressed person per se however my body lives in a permanent state of distress as it does not know that it has breathed adequately. I often what my life would be like had I never met an ENT and had surgery suggested to my well meaning yet ill informed parents. BEWARE

@@vizini2682 correct. In the USA anyway, it has been illegal for decades and maybe always, to get septoplasty before your nasal bones are devloped. So so age 18. You can get anything else internal nose related besides the bones and septum being manipulated.

Turbinate surgery is not a good idea, anyway. If your turbinates are swollen, it's because they are irritated. If your foot was swollen, would you cut part of it off? The turbinates are very important to breathing. Better to find out what is irritating them than to risk injury with surgery. Diet plays a big part in inflammation. Start there.

I have ENS and have done a lot of research and feel like neither spoke to the depth of this issue. I wish he would have explained turbinates are necessary for us to breathe as they filter our air as well and add weight in our nose to move the air to the proper place. It's not just not sensing. Also, sometimes it takes 5 years or more to get symptoms because it's basically atrophying of the nerves in the turbinates. People who get turbinate reductions and at first seem fine might develop allergies eventually because the nose can no longer filter very well. Eventually this would get worse over the years with more sinus problems etc and then into ENS. But doctors wouldn't consider turbinectomy reduction might be the cause. They wouldn't even realize it, not only because many don't believe it, but also because it has been so many years since the surgery. Dr. Hauser saw a pattern of recurring patients over the years of patients coming back and complaining of worsening symptoms and put two and two together. They had developed ENS but over many years. Also, many ENS patients have committed suicide because it is so horrible. And the PRP treatment she talks of doesn't always work, and sometimes it wears off, so there is no real cure yet. They make it sound like there is an easy fix but it is far from it. There are more ENS survivors that have tried treatment and it not worked than those that is has worked. That's the reality. We still need a cure. And it's not that rare. There are many ENS sufferers.

I canceled my turbinate subumosal surgery and found out I am a very allergic person by going to an allergy clinic. I know I probably pussed out but with my luck I probably did the right thing. In the end from what I have read the turbinates are actually organs that regulates breathing especially when you are asleep not just some piece of loose skin or cartilage that can be cut off and replaced with little to no consequences. What do you think?

@ActionMantra you still doing good? The acupuncture saved you? I had turbinate reduction 3 days ago and i am scared I will get ENS. Can it still happen later after surgery, even though things seem fine 3 days so far. I really wish the doctors would warn patients about this horrible, life changing problem. I am upset I was not warned about it.

These surgeons really can cure nothing I believe. I once went to the hospital and they operated on me for testicular torsion, turns out all I had was an infection and it altered me for ever. I lost 5 years of my life trying to cope and survive with that. I feel like a sucker for ever trusting them again, my sinus is burning, I can breathe but i'm very worried and feeling so suicidal now.

I am 18. I have had 2 sinus surgeries. The possibility of ENS was never once explined to me. I have not been able to breathe at 100% for years (i was 15 when I had my first surgery bc of a severe sinus infection that went untreated) I randomly fell down this rabbit hole tonight about ENS after looking up compulsive nose picking. I pick my nose constantly bc I cannot stand things in my nose. I already feel like I cannot breathe bc my nose is dry and I am constantly swallowing what feels like a ball of snot in my throat. I literally started crying when reading about this condition. Everything fit what I feel. Right down to the trouble sleeping and day time sleeping. I cannot breathe at night unless a fan is in my face. I have recently been having even more trouble sleeping waking up multiple times a night and having crazy vivid dreams. The only time I get good sleep is during the day for a few hours I fall asleep.

I wish I would’ve researched before doing a turbinate reduction, It has flipped my life upside down :( Am so regretful I just trusted the ENT when he said there are no real risks. I never had any health problems before just a deviated serum, all I wanted was to be able to breathe through both nostrils.

I ended up with this condition and it is like living in a horrible nightmare. It's not a "mystery"--it's 5th-grade science. People get nerve damage from surgery. If the nerves in your nose get damaged, they can't feel air. Turbinate surgery has been known to give people dry nose. The nasal mucosa also holds nerves that feel air sensation---if the mucosa gets dried out, then the nerves aren't going to do their job.

I have been living with this condition for 8 years because I agreed to have a turbinate reduction surgery after my rhinitis didn't respond to meds. If you are considering having this surgery don't do it, or at least exhaust all other options before this, and I mean ALL (meds, diet changes, lower stress, natural remedies). Horribly this condition only gets worse with passing time. It affects your nose, your lungs, your brain and therefore all your body. I am unable to work since 5 years ago. To get an idea of the severeness and progression of this problem let me put it this way: At first I fantazied about the things I'd do *when* I got cured (like it was a only matter of time), then about the things I'd do *if* I got cured (hoping for a possibilty), then about the things I'd do *if* I would never had this surgery (believing that I'll be no longer cured). Now, my breathing and mind are so damaged that most of the time I can't even fantasize about anything anymore.

Very real. Not an aggressive reduction of turbinates is necessary to cause it. Be very careful when it comes to nasal surgery

please dont do it man. if you wanna go through septoplasty then its fine, but STAY AWAY FROM TURBINACTMY or PARTIAL TURBINACTUMY or turbinate reduction. I did a very mild surgery and now i dont feel the air entering my nose.

This is the worse person to represent helping ens. Subinoy dad single handedly gave me ens. Charge me $3000 for adipose acell injection. Completely damaged my turbinates, nerve damage, scar tissue, and dysfunction of my turbinates. I would nOt wish him on my worse enemy.

I am praying for everyone going through ENS. I've been dealing with Sinusitis and it has been a nightmare. Painful...ear hurt, nose congestion, painful headache and lymph nodes. Nothing so far has worked!! Loss of appetite and no sleep because of this. My sense of smell and taste has decreased as well. But watching this makes me rethink any surgery because the ENT are all about the $$. Oh I've seen 4 of them and it's like I'm in the twilight zone.

I'd say do everything you can to find the treatment -- but never even entertain surgery. Expect the ent doc to say sinusitis, deviated septum, enlarged inferior turbinates, etc. And that may be true. But tackle it in many different ways -- diet, nasal cleaning, oxygen therapy, nasal sprays, vitamin correction -- without surgery as an option.

my turbinates are still enlarged and I did get a septoplasty/turbinate reduction surgery for my terrible breathing problems back in 2015. I only felt a slight difference in symptoms post-surgery. I was quite angry at my surgeon for not reducing it as fully as he can because breathing issues are still there to this day, although they are a bit better than before the surgery. after reading about ENS, I now see why he didn't remove too much from it - he was only being careful , so I'm thankful. I thought I paid thousands for empty results, but it was true a blessing in disguise. its now 2020, I still suffer from stuffiness especially when sleeping/laying down, and humidity / heat. this is why I love the cold and winter season so much, i'm able to breathe fully since my turbinates are working just fine. but I would rather live like this (life isn't perfect) than do another surgery and risking my health. they stay be careful what you wish for, because it might come true - been living with this motto for a while now, and I feel much better. nothing is worth have your health at risk, just deal with things as they come. We are all suffering from something - nobody's whole and perfect

I was scheduled to have balloon sinuplasty, and turbinate reduction yesterday, but the day before, watching youtube to see how the procedure was and found out about ENS, so looked more into it and called my ENT, and said I will only do the balloon sinuplasty and the nasal valve remodeling. She insisted in reducing the turbinates and I was like nop, or I find me another ENT. Im glad I learned about ENS just in time

I wish they had covered just how horrible this condition really is. They didn't even come close. I have it and it is debilitating. People have killed themselves. I spoke to a woman who has this and she had cancer a few years ago. She said she'd rather go through cancer again than deal with ENS. The treatments do not work for everyone so people should not think "If the surgery goes wrong, I can just get the treatment."

@@moonrice555 no i pussed out most doctors make me feel like a burden and won't listen to my requests i did find out why my turbinates were so swollen tho i have severe allergies from weeds to trees to even dust mites and pets. So i am guessing that's what causing the swelling of my turbinates. I recommend all stuffy nose sufferers to get tested for allergies.Still need to get my septum fixed tho.

@@greenm0bsta889 - Hi, darling! Not to worry, no one can perform a surgery on you that you don't want. I literally said MINUTES before the surgery "Actually, is it possible for you to simply straighten my septum and not alter my turbinates?" to which she casually replied "Yeah, that's absolutely fine!". Honestly, going back, I wish I did get them reduced. The risk is very very low, and I still can't really breathe through my nose. FYI, if you're nervous: Don't be! The surgery is so so minor, zero pain, the was zero bruising. I was out so fast and my family was literally asking if I even had anything done. I looked and felt like I had NOTHING done and was bouncy and bubbly within hours. Not even exaggerating. I'll make a video about it on my channel soon. 💜

This syndrome is more real than anything in the world. I had frecuent sinus infections so i went to an ENT and he said i needed a turbinectomy (remove my turbinates) and septoplasty i didnt do a research about them and I didnt look for a 2nd opinion. 5 months after surgeries i have never been so miserable i lost sense of airflow, smell, my nose hurts inside nostrils, dryness, collapse of valvule, i dont breathe well and the ent also cut a piece of my columella so i have a thinner columella ALL FOR NOTHING BECAUSE I COULD BREATHE PLEASE NEVER LET SOMEONE TOUCH YOUR TURBINATES :(

Unless you got your nose punched / traumatized or you got some sort of cancer, a lot of ENT surgeries are unnecessary. Watch your diet / acid reflux etc. It takes time to heal, but it will. Learn that the hard way.

Do you really believe it could be the diet? I've seen 4 ENT specialist and they are all the same and about the $$$$. I have a surgery scheduled March 3 but I'll be canceling that for sure. I don't normally have sinus issues. caught covid in Dec and it left me with sinus issues. My nasal passages are inflammed and the mucus won't pass through. Its hard to manage with headaches and ear aches. Definitely has interfered with my daily life. Guess I was desperate to sign up for the surgery that got approved

@@KadeKurved definitely not a doctor, but if I were you I'd exhaust everything: nasal irrigation, nasal spray (check different brands), exercises, diet breathing exercises, if it doesn't work I'd question if it's really the sinuses causing the problem (could be your throat that actually constrict your breathing, CT scan etc), or if it does disrupt your sleep, try CPAP first in the meantime, it'd open your airway, the more you use your airway, the wider your nasal passageway will be. And you're not alone in this kind of thing, my conservative ENT doctor did mention breathing/sleeping issue is their #1 source of $$$ from unnecessary surgeries.

This condition doesn't seem that rare actually. From what I'm reading, most ENT doctors just ignore their patients that have it, because they see them getting full airflow into their lungs.

This is exactly what happens. The surgeon sticks the camera & light deep into the sinus cavity and marvels at his handy work ...the passage is wide open like a cavern, plenty of room in there & the scar tissue has healed beautifully ...all the while ignoring your pleading, bewildered look and presenting symptoms that you are either exaggerating or fantasizing

This scenerio unfortunately is too common for those who have had their lives ruined from these useless procedures. Patients with this condition with the help of attorneys/legislators need to go after governing bodies of these ent specialists. Also going after the manufacturers of the tools these ear nose and throat specialists use. Don't let them fool you to think that conservative procedures do not cause serious injury.

I think you mean the nose and body are no longer in sync since the turbinates have lost its functionality. It's no that ENS sufferers are pre occupied with breathing. It's the fact that the normal homeostasis of breathing has become compromised from injuries sustained. The nervous system and brain relay a survival mechanism and puts the body in constant fight or flight or suffucation mode since the turbinates are no longer functional.

@@jonathanvenancio1505 I was scheduled and a lab test did not come back in time so they cancelled on me due to missing labs. No idea why they needed them but was the dr. rule. I have since been taking allergy drops and moved to a humid climate which seems to be helping some. I am nowhere normal but can use my nose some now so I have hope again that maybe this will reverse on its own. So for now giving it 6 mos. and will see how I am then, really hoping I can avoid surgery but if things won't resolve I will have to do it.

I've heard people describe a successful surgery as a "new nose". I'd venture to say that isn't what you want. It's comparable to the body rejecting a new organ.

It took me a few mins to wrap my mind around the sensation she described. Once I got it, I felt so bad for her. I’m so afraid of any type of neurological problem. I experienced heron withdrawals many times when i was younger. Enduring that showed me how important it is to have a healthy balanced brain. When I was in WD and suffering from hardly any dopamine in my brain, the symptoms I had were horrific. I can do close to suicide many times.

I used to smoke weed, the doctor doesnt believe me he thinks it can only happen after an operation. But i had a lot of eet aceton in my nose from using bad amphetamine. The taste was straigjt away in my nose nothing burns anymore. It became a big emty space with no pressure. My neck and head heating up almost whole day cause i can not breath. The also take my benzo off in one day after a year of getting it from the doctor 20 mg a day. That also make it worse with pressure in the neck. My throat is full of slime with a lot of air in it. My stomach also feels to much swollen of air to even breathe. But breath hurts ands has no resistamve on is. I dont know what to do. I smoke weed 15 years now i tey alcohol instead. For my ADD. The medics give me bad complications. I domt know what to do the doc dont take me serious. Quit a benzo after a year in one day and doesnt believe i can't breath well But the breathing problem was already before it, since i got alot of aceton in my nog everyday. It affected my lungs and nose. It was on the beginning when i got homeless i need to take for stay awake between alot of rats on a camping. Making holes in my tent. After it i was still homeless really wanted to die , and smoked 500 euro crack everyday but doesnt know how to smoke it. So also alot of ash in my mouth and lungs. I was aleays in the cold outside with not enough clothing and eating. But survived and i quit smokijg crack by myself to. They still aint helpung me only make it worse take the only sedation thing away from me. So i need to order research chems now like pyrazolam. I told him the things i did take in the past doesnt get a research on it you can find in the papers. So they think i there is no search of it, it can not happen :( What i did nobody did or experienced things like that. I got no psycho conversations, no medication and still no help. I commit suicide alot, but want it in a hospital My age is 26 for people who read this, and live/born in the Netherlands.

@@jacobcollins9389 People with ENS still produce mucus but it’s thicker mucus and it’s a problem. The turbinates function is to sweep mucus to the back of the throat in a clean, thin sheet. Because more air is entering the nose, the mucus is stripped of moisture and becomes thicker. Even though the nose is what they call “patent” more wide open, the sufferer feels like they are congested. Another terrible symptom is that thick mucus causes horrible, almost constant, post nasal drip.

There should be more awareness about empty nose syndrome, maybe if it was a well-known syndrome, I wouldn't have come to this with surgery, I don't understand how a disease that seriously reduces the quality of life does not come to the fore.

It is well known. It has been covered up within the ENT field for decades until a few brave Drs spoke out about it. Dr.s against the ens awareness movement know it is a threat to business so they falsify and publish bogus articles to put a spin on the true physical nature a Ens sufferer goes through 24/7.

I had 2 nose surgeries. I started having the feeling of my nose being clogged 24 hours a day. Waking up with a headache almost every day. Finally after complaining for years a doctor finally told me I had this. I can’t lay flat when sleeping feel like I can’t breath. Horrible way to live

Acid reflux, on medication backlash in throat at anytime sometime while talking a glob of snot comes right up in throat from nose. , asthma breathing problems, on medication chest congestion, on daily medication constant sinus infections at least every other month! Went from ent doctor now at a Astma doctor for breathing problems. all after this turbinate surgery don't do it!

Im sorry this happened to you. Try to use a wet handkerchief - and then put it against ur nose. There are treatments out there to alleviate the symptoms. I hope u get better soon

I hope the doctor who did this to me is enjoying the 3rd home and yacht I've paid for. I see specialist after specialist and there is no cure. How many doctors are benefiting from one doctor's mistake? It's a horrible cycle that many of us experience due to the ignorance and complacency of these quacks.

OHHHHHH NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT THIS. I MIGHT HAVE THIS!!!!!! I just had a cat scan done. I told the DR. I had a third sinus surgery but I can't breathe period now. I wake up with headaches I feel like I'm always congested in the right side. if I put my finger on my left nostril the right nostril has no air coming out of it.. it sounds like I'm blowing through a straw : O ..... oh my... she made me get a cat scan.... the minute she recommends Sinus surgery I'm opting out :D ... a 4th surgery !??!?! NO THANKS

I have had numerous doctors assure me that this condition does not exist. Yet there are thousands of people showing their stories and suffering from this. There’s a real problem in modern medicine when we ignore the existence of a condition.

Medical gaslighting at its finest. The patient comes out worse, then the blame is out on everyone else. No accountability. These procedures are not done for life threatening reasons and do not address the root cause of nasal issues. No science whatsoever. All about the money to keep patients coming in and out of the ent department.

This is the 1st time I've ever heard of this condition. I thought it was just as described..."empty nose"....due to surgery. Like there is something that happened during surgery that keeps your nose empty and dry. During my 1st surgery the doctor basically removed so much tissue from one side that it looks like its just empty. I definitely need to look into this Empty Nose Syndrome.

This syndrome is progressive unfortunatley. The biggest issue we face as a community is that a vast majority of medical specialists that perform these surgeries and those in between do not want the public to know the real severe risks these overly routine surgeries. They continue to attempt to gaslight brave Ens victims and doctors that speak up. ANY type surgery or procedure to the nasal turbinates carries the risk of attributing ENS.

I had turbinate reduction surgery, and to put it in a way that might make it more understandable: Imagine your nose is like a single hung window (look it up) in your room. Typically you would open this window just a bit to let in warm of cool air in from outside. That way the room doesn't get too warm or too cold. Now, imagine, you cannot shut this window, and it is stuck halfway open, letting all of this cold air in from outside. Any dirt, dust, whatever it can find, into your room. Your room instantly gets chilly and cannot warm itself up because your window is stuck. That, is what it feels like to have your turbinates reduced too much, and suddenly, your nose is always cold, you cannot produce enough mucus in your throat, your mouth is always dry, and you get cavities. The worst part of this is how easy it is for a doctor to do this. They say it's a simple surgery that will take 20 mins. But it will ruin the rest of your life, because there is no cure.

I was recently diagnosed with this. I went to the ENT for congestion feeling like maybe my sinuses closed. I had a septoplasty in 1986. I’ve had shortness of breath with and without activity. Sometimes when I’m exercising it feels like my nose is clothes pinned shut. I’m a retired RN. I thought maybe I was developing COPD so I started breathing through my mouth instead of panicking and using pursed lip breathing. I too have suffered with jumping while I’m sleeping and occasionally wake up gasping for air. I also have GERD. It actually angers me that there isn’t more known about this. I’ve had pulmonary function tests, lung scans, etc., and they say I’m fine, nothing is wrong. Frustrating.

I need sinus surgery and ENT’s have suggested turbinate reduction as part of the surgery. I’ve seen quite a lot of people dealing with ENS. Not one of the doctors I’ve seen has mentioned this as a possible issue.

It is appalling that even after decades of patients globally demanding justice, only a few drs will have the fortitude to say that even conservative turbinate procedures can cause permanent injury to an essential organ. What a backwards way to think that disturbing a complex organ solely because it becomes inflammed is marketed to overly trusting patients who have been lied to when it comes to the efficiency of these procedures. What is even more disturbing is how patients are heavily screened physically & mentally prior to surgery, then when a negative outcome occurs they are gaslit and coerced to think that an injured organ is not the cause of their 24/7 symptoms and that it's "psychological". The AAO-HNS and those in position to make changes to date have not made an attempt to make things right with patients and families who are left to deal with the life altering complications of turbinate surgeries. No icd code or changes to date. Only a continuance of disinformation

I had rhinoplasty about a year and 4 months ago and ever since I have to constantly think about my breathing and there's no signal that air is flowing through my nose I really hope this goes away and my nose is just still healing =/

I guess I hold hopes that someday I'll adjust or it will be normal again, just for the fear of having to live like this forever. I hope it gets better for you! I'll keep you in my thoughts and pray for you to! It's reassuring to know we're at least not alone in this.

I also have breathing difficulty which i got after a serious injury to my nose. I have had a surgery (septoplasty) to fix it. But the surgery made my breathing more difficult than before. I am so frustrated by not being able to breathe with ease.😭😭😭

I’ve had this condition since June 2, 1992. Worst decision of my life was going to see an ENT about a chronic nasal condition. He recommended a septoplasty / partial turbinectomy on both nostrils. I knew it was a mistake, when the bandages were removed after 4 days. The ENT told me it would take a while to heal and that I would be breathing like a turbojet, singing like a bird afterwards. What a liar. Aspiring singing career was destroyed in a 45 minute procedure. He had the nerve to tell me that my symptoms were all in my head a few months down the road, when I told him what I was going through. I never went back to see him, again. Most doctors were clueless at the time, or at least they acted like they were. My life was forever changed but not for the better.

Hi Tommy how are you doing ? I pray that you’re doing better! I really need to know something : does septoplasty alone cause ENS? ENS is caused by touching the turbinates so what if we only do septoplasty ? Can we still get ENS?

@@asheur9488 Hi. ENS can occur when the turbinates are reduced. A lot of times when doing a septoplasty, the ENT makes a decision to reduce the turbinates if they deem it necessary. Make sure you know what you’re signing and insist that your turbinates are not reduced. Many people are surprised to find out afterwards that the ENT altered the turbinates. Be an informed patient. Many people who go under the surgeon’s knife are not. Most people don’t have a perfectly straight septum. Depending on your septum, maybe you don’t need to have it straightened.

I don't have ENS but I can no longer breathe deeply through my nose due to there being too much space from the turbinate reduction (which creates a suction when I try to breathe deeply).

Omg. I’ve been wondering for years why I have only suction when I breathe deep and never feel satisfied. I had nasal valve retention surgery to fix issue at age 20. It’s like having an internal breath right strip built in so it’s not collapsed feeling as much. My first Sinus surgery was at age 9. Second at 16. The second one they thinned it out to make space. And it’s never been the name. But it’s now livable, but a daily nuisance.
