Thank you for this explanation of this surgery! I’m in the US and I had mine about 12 days ago. Doing ok, but really wished I had this explained better to me, by my Dr. I’m 64 years old woman, and maybe part of what seems a lot longer than usual recovery. I think I had a lot more bleeding than average. Probably my biggest complaint would be all the congestion and snot, (as I have a lot of allergies.). Yes the packing was pretty awful, but the build up in my ears and throat was terrible! I had to make a decision to either breathe or swallow, which made eating really difficult, the first few days. I went in and Dr. suctioned me in office, that helped a lot. Thank you again for taking your time to explain this surgery!!

Mine didn't give any post operation do's vs do not's. Except, " come back in 3-4 days to have the stents removed. In rare cases, they"ll stay in for up 7 days. If you have to stay in the hospital for a day or 2, don't expect the RN's to know what they're doing. They only know a little. My general surgeon knows what she's doing but can't explain worth a damn.

Would be amazing if all surgeons were as thorough as you. ❤ My knee surgeon 10 years ago didn't alert me to many of the complications that could occur. Cut a long story short, he made a decision in the surgery, resulting in me unable to play sport or even go for a run unless I want to get frequent steroid injections and an early knee replacement. He didn't inform me of the proper aftercare for my specific operation. So my year of careful, expensive rehab was all for nothing. My dreams, passion, and potential future were all thrown in the bin.

Didnt sleep a wink. The worst conjestion you could ever imagine and a sore throat from the breathing tube they put in while under GA. First 2 to 3 days feels like you've got a very bad cold whilst being punched in the nose. But it started to clear up a bit after day 3. Had no bleeding at all since i left hospital and not much pain. Hi doctor, great video, very well informed. Sharing my own post-operation experience: I had a stand-alone RFA turbinate ablation. Sadly, the ENT who performed the operation ablated too much on my right inferior turbinate, which resulted into a mini-empty nose syndrome (read bellow, my nose is healed now) which happened due to the turbinate bone getting exposed. The ENT did not ablate the back of my inferior turbinates, so the improvement is minimal. I did everything right in terms of post-op visits to the doctor, using nasal anti-bacterial ointment and so forth. Post-op there was some moderate pain (5-6) to my front teeth. The next ENT surgeon I visited prescribed lubrication for 6 more months (* Used nasogel but rinopanteina drops / ointment did it for me) for my turbinate to heal, now we can perform the ablation again in about November. Thankfully, the bone now isn't exposed anymore, my mucosa is healing up nicely, there was also a complication due to long-term usage of nasal steroids, I had a small hole (start of perforated septum) in my septum, which too is healing now since I lubricate the area. The operation took place on 14/04/2022, now, 19/08/2022 I am much better, but will need to repeat the operation as I mentioned above. Finally, I am glad that I've met a surgeon who was more than willing to explain and didn't rush for an operation. I've tried everything, from nasal steroids to nasal rinsing, breathe right and other nasal dilators, even used vicks aromatherapy, these things didn't work for me. My word of advise, interview your doctor thoroughly, thankfully, I settled to an experienced ENT who listened thoroughly. I would like to thank dr. Veer, your videos have been both informative and comforting, from learning how to use steroid sprays the right way, for helping me understand how manage post-op pain after tonsillectomy.

I'm on my 3rd week AFTER surgery. My surgery was a Septal Reconstruction + Bilateral inferior Turbinate Submucosal Resection. Basically my Septum was corrected and my Turbinates were shrunken because they too, were making it hard to breathe. Packing wasn't necessary because my ENT specialist doesn't like the bacterial concern so he uses 4% Cocain and 1% Lidocain for bleeding. Saline rinses with clean (boiled and the chilled water) changed the game during the first 2 weeks and using clean Q tips to coat Bacitrocin gel throughout my nasal cavity (deep) to keep dried blood from crusting and blocking my airway during healing. Felt no pain after the 1st day. It was wonderful he did an excellent job. After 10 days my post op doctor cleaned out the inside of my nose with what looked like a micro dental suction tube and that helped alot, I wasn't using enough Bacitrocine and had gunk up there. After that I was able to breathe great. I still use the rinse but not as frequent and I don't need the gel as much. I look forward to the next post on apt and see where I am!

I did my septoplasy a week ago today. In the next hour, I'm going to remove the inner splints which I'm nervous for. The first night wasn't great in my experience... But then again. It's surgery! It's not going to be pleasant. I did bleed quite a lot... I had the packs in my nostrils which was. Rather nasty pulling them out. But I was still a bit dazed from the anaesthetic sleep 2 hours later. My ENT informed me that my septum was a lot more deviated than he anticipated from the scans. At first, the hated the constant saline rinse and spitting out of mucus, but after day 3, I was quite the pro. I hated not being able to blow my nose! I would say the "pressure" in your nose is the most uncomfortable. I have quite a small nose so taking out the splints I believe will make a HUGE difference. The healing.. Is not bad. I expected to be much much worse, 7 days later. I feel back to normal, just a headache from huge congestion from these damn splints. I did the surgery in my school holiday (I'm a teacher from South Africa) so I was worried about only having two weeks to heal.. One week in. I'm not worried at all! But all in all. I'm very happy I've done this... I do feel as though I can breathe better, even though I'm congested with a heck load of snot. Will keep you all updated after the splint removal! ❤

I wish you could come to the United States then I would definitely have this surgery which I do need because of a deviated septum from the age of 10 from an injury. As I got older, it gets worse (sinus infections, constantly blowing my nose, nasal drip, etc.) I can breathe through my nose quite well though. But when I look up ENTs in Arizona, they all have very bad reviews and they do not have any bed side manners. You explain everything so well and you have a great personality and no doubt a great surgeon.

I was told I had a deviated septum pretty much all the time my left nostril is blocked the doctor said he wouldn't recommend surgery. I've started using nasal strips and it seems to be helping .

I had my surgery last Tuesday, June 11th, 2024. It was actually multiple operations at once. I had my deviated septum fixed, they cut out some of my mucus membrane, they fixed a scar on my lip and made it less noticeable along with a bit of plastic surgery to make my nose equal on both sides. (I was born with a cleft lip and palette) The procedure was approximately 4 hours and the last thing I remembered before going under was the nurse giving me medical fentanyl which I gave her a weird look before passing out. I’m going onto my 4th day after the surgery and I feel more pressure than pain but I am overall just irritated that there is a giant thing in my nose and I have to wait 72 more hours until it gets removed. I’m used to the blood and the feeling of being incredibly weak after surgery as this is around my 20th one but sleeping is still hard. I am personally carrying around a small plastic trash bag to spit blood into which is very useful and I highly recommend. I hope these next few days go by faster and I’ll finally be able to breathe!!!

I am 8 data post surgery. No pain at all. I wake up stuffy still and it feels very “cushy” up in my nose. No drugs either . Why does it feel so cushy up in my nose? It used to feel bony before. The surgeon removed the bony spur and did a septoplasty. It is so straight. The doc did a great job.

Great explanation and very informative. But for my case it seems there is some kind another problem, I feel like I have blockage inside the inside the nose bone. No matter how move I nose I still feel that nose is blocked and air does not flow. Feels like some kind nose part is just pressed with something and blocked. I think Septoplasty is not the problem in my case, but I have no idea what it could be.

Had my septoplasty yesterday. All went well. No complications. As the pain meds wore off in the evening, I felt progressively worse and my nose is now 100% blocked. I've had the worst night's sleep ever, feel like I've been punched hard in the face and can only breathe through my mouth. I'm supposed to start nasal douching today and it absolutely terrifies me. The instructions say to have your head completely upside down and fill your nostrils with the solution. It also says to blow bubbles to loosen things up but as my nose is totally blocked, this would be impossible. Surely, having your head upside down is the last thing you should do after this type of surgery. Even leaning forward slightly causes a lot of pressure in my nose. I never see this type of nasal douching instruction given in any of the videos I've found. Everyone just simply leans over a sink/ bowl and sprays upwards. Can't I just do that?

I had the operation a day ago and I am really in too much pain and it all feels horrible. The nose is completely blocked and breathing through the mouth is dreadful as it dries completely and can't swallow or talk as used to. Still oozes blood from my nostrils and I don't know how long it will last to notice betterment. I can't sleep at night and have too much headache.

I am about a week post op and I’ll give the rare one out of these comments but it is a ROUGH recovery. I can’t breathe out of my nose because of the splints and I’ve been in pain since surgery. My mouth is also numb. It’s not all roses like it seems, but I’m hoping tomorrow when I get these stents removed I’ll be getting better. Good luck!

It's like a replay of a memory... Only tip I'd pass on is its a bit 'fun' post surgery if you use a CPAP and full face mask... 'oozing/small stream' and you need a supply a packs for a week or it gets a bit messy - try not to sneeze!

I had a septoplasty and functional sinus operation two years ago but one of the dissolvable stents left behind was pressing on a blood vessel, so I spent several days bleeding before returning to the operating table 10 days later for epistaxis control. We lost out on a family camping trip and had to use more sick time to be away from work than I had initially planned.

A very informative guide, particularly your drawings. In some guides, you see certain types of deviation termed C shaped, S shaped, T shaped - no doubt there are more types than letters in the alphabet - if not those drawings should be redrawn by you. Do you guys do things differently depending on how and where things are deflected?

I got my surgery done 40 days back. The night of the surgery was very uncomfortable. No pain but because of splints in my nostrils, I couldn't breathe through my nose and ended up breathing through my mouth. Had very dry mouth with my tongue feeling like a rough iron rod. Could have been due to the medication used during surgery. Kept sipping water every 2 minutes and didn't sleep a wink. The next 3 days/nights were not so bad. Could breathe properly only after the splints were removed.

Now I am scared. I am 67. At 5 I put a crayon up there and a doctor thought he pushed it into my esophagus. Nope. At 25 I nearly choked on this horrible looking thing, reading in bed, as he literally pushed it up into my sinus where it sat growing into sinus cavities for 20 years. (My formative years.) I was given a number to see another ENT outside my area as they said I need a specialist after my CT scan. My right side is completely blocked now. I pray I will smell again one day.

I wish I watched this before my septoplasty. I ended up with a septal perforation 2 weeks after my septoplasty. My doctor gave me a nasal spray prior the operation, which, according to the video, is a malpractice. I am so irritated and flustered with how things turned out. I tried to fix an issue and came down with a whole new one.

Thanks for the info, regarding septal perforations and collapse in cocaine users, is this due to frequently starving the perichondrium of blood through vasoconstriction or because the cocaine they're snorting is cut with abrasive material?
@VikVeerENTSurgeon2 жыл бұрын
The lack of blood is what we are taught, but I don't know much about street cocaine so I guess there might be nasties in the drugs that might erode the cocaine. I'm too innocent I guess 🤣. I'll ask around, thanks for the question!
