Letters like these should be protected above any statue or monument because they force a reader to acknowledged the humanity of the writer. We must esure they survive the long term movement aimed at silencing voices of Confederates. Thank you, Sir. ✝️ Reason for the Season.

Thanks JD, I certainly enjoy reading through them and seeing how they were thinking. Ol’ Tally here wrote around 100 letters home to his father, sisters and an aunt. Interesting to see how the content varied depending on who he was writing to. The letters to his father are gruesome. I also find it endearing that he always sends his love to his dogs, a man after my own heart in that regard.

@@BirdDoggI want to let you know about the Smith family letters that have been recorded and made available by Virginia Tech. You can see the original letters and a typed transcript. In those, one of the letters talked about a family members death and it said please don't share these details with the others. Thanks

The vast majority of those in the Confederate States Army were simple people. In their eyes, they fought to repel what they perceived to be an illegal invasion of their states by an overreaching federal government. When you look at it, this was not much different than what the 13 original colonies did back in 1776.

You are correct. They were protecting their homes and families from the Blue Bellies, who would murder southerners and abscond with their property. Lincoln was an a-hole. He imprisoned Maryland reps so that they wouldn't be able to vote to join the Confederacy.

Amen, folks don't see it that way anymore, even in the south. Its become a slavery issue, that all southerners had and was for. 90% of the Confederate soldiers and folks at home, didn't even own slaves. It was about states rights, period. God bless you, and, God bless Dixie.

@@johnjameson2731 It was also about profit. The Yankees made a lot of money from their invasion. They used to steal the southerner's silverware and wedding rings. Whatever they couldn't carry away back north, they just burned. Also, the Union generals used to shake down the southern towns. The town elders used come and meet the generals as they approached the town. The generals would make their demands known. Sometimes they would take the money and spare the town. Sometimes they would take the money and have the privates burn it down, anyway. They used to head for the closets , with their torches. Once the clothing and wood set alight, that's all that was needed.
