Hi Corey, and fellow flower, garden lovers! My name is Wendy and I'm a new subscriber. I just wanted to say that when you were trying to get your camera to focus on the lovely salvia and then turned and that pot of purple/blue petunias were just RIGHT THERE, my heart just about jumped out of my chest. Goodness how beautiful! Your whole nursery is beautiful but it's like Emeril likes to say..."BAM" those purple ones...woo hoo!💜

Hi Corey, I was curious to see how you come up with your prices for your hanging baskets? This is my first year for hanging baskets in our greenhouse and there are only 2 chain hardware stores in town (small town), no nurseries within a mile. So hard to compare prices with the other places in town being smaller hardware stores and not actual nurseries. Thanks so much!!! Love everything you do and use all your info for inspiration!!!

@beckycholensky5552 Navigating pricing in the nursery business is like an unsolvable puzzle. You've got all these formulas floating around, like doubling the cost for finished items and tripling for the ones needing transplant. It's a balancing act, covering labor to utilities to materials without breaking the bank. We've carved out our niche with our baskets by using top-notch plants and giving them loads of TLC, folks notice the quality when they step through the door. We're sticking to last year's prices: $45 for the 12" ones and $55 for the bigger 14.5". We stopped carrying smaller baskets -- there is definitely a market for them, but that's what is available at many other places. If you're sweating bullets at the thought of your prices being too high, I hear you. I'd suggest resisting the urge to price too low unless you've got baskets that didn't cost you much time and money and you can turn them quickly. It's also easier to offer a promotion (note, I didn't say "sale") if your prices aren't already set at your rock bottom, break-even rate -- remember to consider the expenses you incur for any product you don't sell. Make it so your promotions reward customers who spend more -- like Buy 2 and save $5 or Buy three and get a free succulent or something like that. That way if anyone comments on your prices or asks for a discount, its very easy for you to say, "no problem, you'll get a better price if you (insert incentive criteria here)." Here's another suggestion: upgrade a few baskets, make them absolute showstoppers? Pop them in larger containers with plants you know have great vigor and flower power. Once the compliments start coming in and you realize you have customers who will pay a premium, it'll be easier for you to price your regular baskets what they are worth. Have you checked out any Facebook Groups for Independent Garden Centers? IGC Talk! is a gem. Dive into past discussions, search for stuff like "price" or "pricing," and trust me, you'll feel right at home. It'll feel nice knowing you're not alone in this pricing maze.

Question Hi Corey, another question is it possible to propagate begonias, had to trim back one that was pretty leggy??? Love your ideas and your information. May I send photos of creations once complete? Peace and everything good !🌻🌻🌻

I haven’t propagated them, but it can definitely be done. There’s a link to our website in my KZbin profile, you can send photos there 👍

why arent the flowers fed into the sides of the baskets?
@UpNorthGardenMI5 ай бұрын
I’m not sure I understand what you mean. A trailing variety will naturally trail down the pot. Containers with holes in the side are an option, but most people I know who have used them abandon them after a few years.

So much eye candy 😍 I can't wait til spring and summer! Do you remember which petunias are at 5:30?

Those are Supertunia Bordeaux and Supertunia Royal Velvet at 5:30 ☺️

@@UpNorthGardenMII love how Bordeaux has a lavender color in your basket. I've seen it as more of a pinkish magenta color before.
@UpNorthGardenMI9 ай бұрын
@@marinakira3153 There is a SuperCal Bordeaux that is an intense Pinkish/Magenta -- I think there is one other one with the name Bordeaux out there too... someone needs to think about that a bit more when naming. The Supertunia Bordeaux has a great light purple with dark great veining -- there are similar looking plants from Headliner, Durabloom, Cascadias, and Sanguna.

@@UpNorthGardenMI Do you think Cascadias Purple Ice looks pretty similar to Supertunia Bordeaux?

I cannot find the Supercal Petunias in San Antonio.

They’re starting to appear at Walmarts around here. Not sure what they’ll have out your way. Ask at your local garden center what varieties to best in your area - just be sure they know you want a vigorous, self-cleaning variety.
