Spend some time with us and Caitlin from Ask a Mortician in a METAL cemetery! It was a treat getting to wander the paths and explore the history... and we couldn't have asked for a better friend to do it with.

*+Atlas Obscura* Thanks *+Caitlin* for sending me here and thanks to *+Ella Morton* for this video as well. I agree with the _beauty in decay_ motif (so to speak) to which you both refer. Beauty is not always in the new, the young or the fresh. The green patina of aged copper, the patterns of crazing and chipped ceramic, moss and lichen on granite or stone.., all these things are beautiful. Subbed.

Out of the HUNDREDS of channels that I follow, I have notifications on for less than a half dozen of them. So I woke up today with a notification from Atlas Obscura, Ask a Mortician, and a history channel that uploads about 4 times a year. I hit the KZbin jackpot.

I know! When I started Catlin's video and she said she was in Brooklyn, for a second I thought she might be going to Peter Steele's grave and doing like a tour of "metal" graves. Though when I realised she meant actual metal "headstones" I wasn't disappointed, still a very fascinating subject

I love that Atlas Obscura has a youtube channel. I found their website a while ago while i was looking up Houston buildings/attractions and now im hoping they can have videos of them. I live in Houston some of these building are not as accessible so it would be nice to have a view of them. Like i heard the Magic Island was opening up again but for as long as I can remember, the sphinx building has sat there and it would be interesting to have a video about it cause its so strange to me.
@atlasobscura6 жыл бұрын
Hey Margarita! They sound lovely. We don't seem to have any of these buildings on our website, but we'd definitely love to hear more about them. We'll take a look :)
@maggers25806 жыл бұрын
@@atlasobscura I noticed. It's a weird, kind of iconic, building in our city. It used to be a magic show restaurant that was Egyptian themed but was abandoned and so It just sat their looking so out of place and outdated but as a kid I would see it every time we passed by it on the freeway. Everyone knows it but it's an enigma. There is a lot of weird little places around Houston too. And people. I would recommend the Wilde collection. It's a store/museum that just has a lot of strange curiouous and it's fun to go look at all the cool stuff they have.

One of our local cemeteries has a number of metal gravestones similar to the one at 5.07. they all have a similar icon on the top of the cross that I think may be some sort of fraternal organization, maybe Elks, or something like that. They are all so corroded you can't read them.

If I were a billionaire, I’d have all these gravestones redone I’m stone and a museum created to house the old metal 🎸 ones for they are works of art at this point. My family are...oddballs and go to old cemeteries to take pictures and read gravestones to honor ppl who have long since been forgotten. So to think these gravestones are disappearing to the elements. Well it makes me wish I was a billionaire.
