Jamerson thought in entire phrases. Never got caught in the middle of an idea. It’s why he landed so well. He had the entire song figured out in seconds so that freed up a lot of creative mental space. Tons of self call and response or question and answer. Good example is the outro (last 8) on Marvin’s “come get to this.” So conversational. Three main beats, then he talks a little bit before he gets to the next 3 mains on the change. The thing is how he handcuffs himself to this 3 beat thing on the change till the end of the song while filling the in between’s with all this chatter. Check it out.

James Jamerson was truly a once-in-a-century kind of musician. The way he played and how he composed those incredible counter melodies was just awe-inspring. Everytime i hear Jamerson playing, I can't help but smile and laugh because of how incredible he was. He was playing bass lines that were like lead parts, but never took away from the song. He was able to support each song rhythmically, melodically, and harmonically in a way that can probably never be replicated.

Aha. Just had a lyric open up for me . On ‘ain’t that a bitch’ guitar watson sings ‘ Kareem ajudebar couldn’t make these prices …. with a skyhook. ‘ 🎶 Now ,at last, some 30 years later , I get what he’s in about . What a lovely unexpected gift 🎁 from a delight filled interview 🙏

Love this When I get the chance I love play improv for ecstatic dance . Bodies moving and my fretless bypass thought entirely. The resulting lines are delicate and delicious
