Christopher Coyne, F.A. Harper Professor of Economics at George Mason University discusses his new book "In Search of Monsters to Destroy: The Folly of American Empire and the Paths to Peace" (2022).
American interventionism has largely been unsuccessful in establishing liberal political regimes abroad. In his recent book, Coyne argues that this militaristic approach rarely leads to peace. There are more liberal means, Coyne proposed, namely a commitment to peace, demonstrated by reducing America’s worldwide deployments, and a renewed focus on people, goods, and services both at the state level and at the cultural level. Rather than isolationism, he argues that the solution to the problem of tyranny is in spreading liberalism through these truly liberal means rather than attempting to build free states from imperialism.
Bill Easterly, Co-Director of the Development Research Institute at New York University” remarks, “Christopher Coyne has long been the leading voice in economics on the folly of American military interventions overseas. In his remarkable new book, "In Search of Monsters to Destroy," he gives unpopular but deeply compelling arguments why such interventions are a threat to liberal values both at home and abroad.”
IHS Community Engagement Strategist, Josh Ammons, will host the conversation, which will be followed by Q&A.
