A Conversation with Dan Gavere, the Godfather of Whitewater Paddle Boarding

Dan Gavere is known by some to be the "Godfather of whitewater SUP." His first paddle boarding on the river dates back to 2007 after an already illustrious whitewater boating career.
When I first explored rivers his KZbin videos inspired me. Though I didn't want to paddle off big waterfalls like his attempts of Celestial Falls in Oregon, I did want to explore as many different types of rivers as possible on a board.
Over the years I have had the pleasure to paddle with Dan on the White Salmon river and beyond. In this episode we sit down with him to get his perspective about paddle boarding in general and some of the things he's up to.

In the mid 90's Jeff Snyder was standing up on IK's using extra long wooden paddles he and his brother, Jim, made and running rivers. He named it "Striding."

I got a paddle board after kayaking for many years and this is what I found… -It activates your core like a yodeling convulsing yedi -The gracefulness is lacking in every aspect but laying down -Your falling from above the waterline so rocks and sticks are more that bumpers but impalers -and lastly you can’t hide beers anywhere and are exposed to sun and air -oh yeah oddly enough my feet hurt after gripping the Board like a scared ape. This sport isn’t for me but am just glad to be able to have tried and lied.

Over the years I've paddled/raced whitewater kayak , C 1 & C 2 and for me it seemed to have run it's course. A few years ago I took up paddle boarding. Whitewater SUP has given me a new spark (at 71 it's harder gin up). I'm blessed to have a couple good buds that keep me honest.

His name is Jeff Snyder and yes he is the OG of OG Godfathers of whitewater and standing through whitewater, way ahead of his time. I believe he is a bit broken now as I dont hear of him hitting the river as much these days. His brother Jim is also a famous OG whitewater character and the inventor of Squirt Boating.

Great interview! I'm living in Ecuador the last several years and there's wicked good paddling here in Southern Ecuador when the rivers up flowing! I wish I could post pics here for you... you'd love it!
