Thanks so much for this interview. As an Oklahoman and avowed R.A. Lafferty fan, I feel compelled to point out that Lafferty lived in Tulsa, where he was a newspaperman, a heavy drinker, and reportedly a frequent visitor to the small midwestern SF conventions. Never met him but I have some friends who did, and they described him just like Wolfe did.

Exactly right. Lafferty defied genre. Was incredibly inventive. His characters were often allegorical, his prose was whimsical, folksy and archaic, and his stories straddled the border between high science fiction and mythology. His vernacular followed the tradition of native american tall-tale tellers and pastoral naturalist authors from the old west. He was one of the greats.
