A Conversation with P. Roy Vagelos

P. Roy Vagelos, Merck's former Chairman and CEO, talks about his life and career with Andrew R. Marks, professor at the Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics at the Columbia University College of Physicians and surgeons. Dr. Vagelos went from waiting on Merck employees at his father's luncheonette in New Jersey to joining the pharmaceutical company, where he revolutionized the drug discovery process. With his team, he developed the first statin, a molecule that reduces cholesterol, and a drug that kills the river blindness parasite with a single tablet.

Dr. Vagelos is a great man. It is a shame that none of the previous comments thus far has alluded to his generosity or to the immeasurable support he gives to educating our youth; to improving medicine and to science. He is a role model to many young people who grow-up to become healers and caregivers to those in very vulnerable positions in life.

the interviewer is asking moronic questions...a person of greek origin with no role models in terms of science and education?? The whole culture is built on that...even is parents due to poverty could not get formal education, they struggle for their kids to go to school..the whole culture admires knowledge....insulting person
