We sat down with the amazing author and prolific radio host, Dr. Warren Wiersbe and here is what he shared.
I thank God for my sixth grade teacher. She said to me "I want you to do a lot of reading, and a lot of writing. That's where your life lies", and she was right.
I went off to seminary in Chicago. I was there five years. The first week that I was there I prayed like this "Lord, I'm going to be here five years, I don't want to waste them. Please give me a verse that will carry me through", and he did. Psalm 16:11, "You will show me the path of life in your presence is fullness of joy, and ... I better do that again. "You will show me the path of life in your presence is fullness of joy and at your right hand there are pleasures for ever more". Now years later, I discovered that's Billy Graham's life verse. The Lord has been so good to me in teaching me. I had wonderful instructors. I was hungry and thirsty to learn how to do it. And of course, I've tried to help others to do it as well. It's a great life.
I think bible study is one of the most exciting things I ever do. I'm not a football fan, I'm not an athlete as you know. But, this book I've been living with ever since I got saved that night at a Youth For Christ rally. I've used it on the radio, I've used it in conferences and as I study the word, it always tells me something. I feel sorry for people who read it and put the bible back on the shelf and forget about it. I've sometimes read a passage over, and over, and over again. I did a series on the radio on the different pictures of the bible, in the bible.
The bible is seed, well plant it. The bible is bread, well then eat it. The bible's a light, well then follow it. The Holy Spirit is there to teach us.
Well, I think that the studying of the word of God depends upon the heart. This book was written for the mind, but basically for the heart.
When I open my bible, I want God to say something to me. So the joy of bible study is not in learning something abstract. The joy of bible study is seeing your life changed.
There's a great need for the average student to have what we're going to do in that particular version of the bible. I use my New King James. I just keep using it. This one's falling apart. The public needs the word of God. That's the thing that we need today. People need to have an appetite for the word of God.
What we have to do is read it systematically. We don't have to read a whole chapter. We can read three verses and stop and say, wait a minute, I want to think about this. That's when I reach for my bible that has the cross references.
Because the bible is it's own expositor. The word of God teaches us the word of God. The Holy Spirit helps us. This is one of the joys of the Christian life.
It's really a commentary. It isn't just some notes, or some maps, or something. You find out why and how. I'm praying God will bless it because it's a desperately needed thing. I hope that the one that we're doing, the book that we're doing, will be used of God to bring families together, to bring church's together. To help people know the word of God and what they should do with it.
I trust it (The Wiersbe Study Bible) will be a blessing.
Look for more sessions from our day with Dr. Wiersbe, coming soon.
